@JoePompliano Stan Kroenke's $4 billion Angels purchase makes much more sense when you look at the team's lease. Anaheim owns the stadium and 153 acres around it, but the team currently pays no rent, and because the revenue-sharing minimums are so high, the city has made only about $415,000 in three decades. The Angels can also leave in six years, which means the city can either be left with an empty venue that needs hundreds of millions in repairs or they can sell the stadium and surrounding land to Stan Kroenke. That would give Kroenke hundreds of acres in Orange County for a mixed-use development at a huge discount. Today's newsletter breaks down all the details. READ MORE: HERE
Right across the 57 freeway in the OC Vibe project next to the Honda Center where the Ducks play. 3B+ project of housing, retail, venues, etc.... A new stadium would be a perfect fit with an owner that actually gives a shit about winning. Getting the Angels back on track would be another "trophy" of sports franchises that he's collecting. If he can also make money using some of the property surrounding a new stadium, it's a win-win...
Personally, I never cared about the name. Not ignorant to the cultural differences between LA and OC (I've lived in both South LAC and North OC), but I think it's overstated. Not all of LA is Boyle Heights and not all of OC is Newport Beach. Most communities are similar. Geographically, Angel Stadium is maybe 30 miles from DS and Anaheim is in the census-designated LA Metro area (includes LA, LB, and SNA but excludes Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties). They are the American League representative of the LA market. There are many teams across professional sports that do not play in the city they are named after. Yeah, I get that OC has 3 million people and in some ways its own economy and culture, but I still don't think it's a big deal. If they change their name, I might prefer the CA Angels throwback. The current Angel Stadium site is perfect if Kreonke can buy the land. Even though it won't happen for many reasons, the waterfront park in Long Beach proposed a while back would be cool. Just a nightmare for traffic.
they had seemingly just renamed the team name to anaheim angels, when that carpetbagging douche moreno decided to put LA in the title my hatred was more directed at him that said, i completely agree with going back to california angels
