Today is National Widlife Day. I guess it's up to each and every person how much they care. Or don't. I get a whole bunch of material from the animal rights groups I belong to on a daily basis. It's mostly extremely depressing...they pull no punches on the level I am on. But, sometimes there is good news. Once in a great while. Rarely. I have just come across an item I feel I should share with the DSP brothers... There is something called " wolf whacking" that goes on in Yellowstone and other areas in the West. Simply, killing wolves without any filter. If a wolf, or a pack, wander out of a protected area, as if they can read or comprehend invisible borders, they are immediately set upon by trophy hunters and other human killers for their own reasons. A 12 member wolf pack was found in various states of physical decomposition, all shot by a person who trailed after them in a high- speed snowmobile while they attempted to escape . This psychotic killed every member of the pack. The whole fucking pack. All 12. It is known that the alphas and elders led the killer away from the cubs, who were left at the den with the sister of the female alpha, her litter, of course. The cubs have little or no chance to survive now in the wild. I don't expect everyone to feel the way I do, but this curdles my blood. And makes me see red. Outrage. One of those times it makes one ashamed of being a member of the human race.
Thats terrible. Truly terrible. There's really no instance where this would be excusable - especially the way it was done - but I could sort of understand the reasoning if it was a rancher who wanted to make sure they didn't return to prey on his livestock - that which he depends on to make a living and feed his family. Even then, there has to be a better way to either protect his herd or a program to trap and relocate the pack. Probably easier said than done in both cases though. But if it was a thrill seeker shooting them just to satisfy some innate killing instinct, I'd have zero compassion. I wouldn't even credit him with being a "trophy hunter," due to the slaughter of multiple wolves. Trophy hunters are bad enough. Yeah big men they are, sitting safely 200 yards away and taking down a beautiful creature, defenseless due to simply being born as something other than a human, with a high-powered weapon that someone else built. They'll get no respect from me. Hunting if they are going to process the kill for food is one thing; hunting so that they can put up a decapitated head on the wall is something altogether different. But mass slaughter of animals just for the thrill of it, then leaving the carcasses behind for someone else to clean up, is pretty much the lowest of lows in my book. I say if they find the perpetrators, take them up to northern Alaska, find a location 100 miles from the nearest civilization, and let them fend for themselves, weaponless. Let's see how they do on the other side of that equation.
By the way, in case I come across as a lover of all animals, there are ground squirrels, gophers, and scrub jays here, and if I could easily get rid of every single one of them, I wouldn't think twice. But it wouldn't be a thrill killing, that's for sure. And I'd make sure they fed other wildlife, so it wouldn't be a complete waste of life. When I get lucky and find one in my trap, I set it out in the rear of my property and the next day it's gone. Likely foxes, coyotes, owls, etc benefit.
