Might be me getting a little old and testy, but fuck it.

Went to the Laker game Sunday night and in between periods they honored a young lady who served in the military in the Middle East and came back in a wheel chair. They brought her out to center court and told her story. A closeup of her face was shown on the video screen and she was very emotional after the much deserved standing ovation she received from almost everyone in attendance.

To my dismay (putting it kindly) a couple of the dick heads who remained in their seats were right in front and behind me. You don't have to cheer loudly, but at the very least stand and show some respect. Wife had to shush me after I said "what is wrong with these fuckers?" I said it hoping they would react, but they didn't.

Might have been my Frankie Pentangeli ("the old man had too much wine") moment, but thinking back now............fuck it and fuck them.

    Cicci......the door.

Had a much better experience Sunday.

Sunday afternoon we were having drinks and watching football in our hotel bar. Seated next to us was an elderly (even older than me) black gentleman with two young people. The man was wearing a jacket with a NHL logo, not exactly stand wear for the brothers. I didn't think much of it until the next morning when I read a story about a MLK Day commemoration at Monday afternoon's Kings' game. They were honoring Willie O'Ree, the Jackie Robinson of hockey. Times had a picture of O'Ree and sure as shit that was they guy sitting us on Sunday.

Next morning we're at breakfast at the hotel and O'Ree ends up sitting a couple of tables away by himself. On our way out we went by and congratulated him on being honored that day. He couldn't have been more gracious. Stood up and shook our hands and conversed for about 5 minutes. So great meeting such a historical figure in a sport I love. He sounded and looked great for 81. Only regret is I didn't get a picture. It would have been something to treasure.

    I agree with you but
eh... Why do y'all care about this so much.
it's like when folks don't stand and applaud when dear leader speaks in north Korea.
if the dude was booing the lady I can understand. But they just there minding their own business and y'all want to control their emotions by forcing them to stand up?
when you need to compel/shame people to respect the military you are missing the point.
    you commie bastards!

    north korea huh?
so you're equating the us with an autocratic nation?
no one is forcing them to stand, in fact, that's the point
a better analogy would be someone holding a door for you
    just say thank you

    no
the analogy is about thought control and emotional manipulation.
it's similar to political correctness and herd mentality.
it is all a form of pressure
and pressure is for hurrying of the prey

it's one thing to see two guys not paying attention to the veteran and not liking that.
nobody is saying its a good thing that they don't care much about the veteran
but they should not be scolded for what is in essence a thought crime of omission.
the crime of failure to show enough sadness or failure to fake caring about a veteran etc...

this attitude even if we'll intentioned breeds more fakeness in society
we get the term politically correct from a society that compels a fake kindness that we call politeness
but it's not well intentioned because no matter if it's millenials or old geezers the enforcers of such fake kindness use agressive behavior to get others to talk or act or feel like they want.
which shows you the root of their kindness is rotten political pressure to conform.
like the old lady shushing you loudly in church as a kid
or like back when you were growing up in Victorian England ;)

again it's not about forcing one's thoughts/wills on someone
it's about them not knowing better

It's not about wanting someone to think like me, it's about showing someone some respect who earned it. Just call it decency during some pretty indecent times. Hardly "fake kindness."

And despite my words, I would never take it any further. I'm not like that at all.

Pro Football Writers of America have awarded Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack with the Defensive Player of the Year honors.

An impressive season for Khalil Mack was commemorated on Wednesday as the PFWA announced Mack as their choice for Defensive Player of the Year, the first Raider to receive the award since its inception in 1992. Mack was named as an All-Pro by the Associated Press earlier this month and is the presumed front runner for the NFL’s DPOY award to be decided in the coming weeks.

You think they earned your respect, so therefore they did.

The people sitting may not think so and shouldn't feel compelled to stand. It's more likely they were just clueless, but in a tolerant society, you gotta let people have their opinions if they aren't hurting you.

Not a popular thought, but there are people that believe the military doesn't fight for our freedom, but rather just protects the ruling class and their corporate interests. Sort of like some people think the police are oppressors locally, the military are oppressors internationally. If you think about it from that point of view, maybe it's a different look?

decency is leaving people be when they arent hurting you or even causing problems
and respect is not earned, its not an arbitrary thing or else its just another commodity
i know the adage that respect is not given but earned, but thats a saying of an indecent society
respect is given freely to all or its just a hollow gesture
do you respect this veteran more than others who have also risked their life but came back whole?
    of course you dont.
    you respect them equally
do you respect the veteran more than the policeman or the firefighter?
    how bout the school teacher?
how bout the dude that bags your groceries at the supermarket?]
because if you respect those others but not your grocery bagger then your respect is a silly game
    like likes on facebook
we are playing a silly game with respect
like the silly game where your emotions fail you when your expectation of another mans emotions is not up to your judgement
these guys sat down while other stood to honor a veteran
they may be great guys who are very respectful in personal situations but maybe not in large rally like forms
they did nothing 'wrong' but failed to live up to your idea of what is right
and for that they deserve to be publicly shamed or treated aggressively?
I know you wouldnt take it further but those around you see your example as someone older
they may follow your lead thinking they are in the right and use their self righteous indignation and youthful exuberance to take things a few notches higher
now that would not be your fault, every man is his own boss... but it wouldnt stop you from feeling a little shitty that you inadvertently helped spur them on
but then again you wanted them to react... react how?
and if they reacted by telling you to mind your own business with a few expletives would you have taken it kindly?
would the crowd around you jump on the dickheads and help you come down on them?
it could easily become a problem
glad this wasnt at a raider game
them cholos have a whole nother view of 'respek'.
and you would have been in deep violation, and some chola might have gotten in your face for disrespecting her boyfriend
i guess we fall into two different camps
there are people who feel its their job to aggressively correct people whose very existence they find offensive
like these two guys, they were literally doing nothing and that was offensive to you, so you felt you had to act and put them in their place/teach them a lesson.
while other people only teach lessons to those who like to put people in their place and leave those who arent harming anyone to learn by example
afterall the only person they are hurting are themselves and the emotions of those who cant stand to look at them
they certainly arent hurting the veteran who they are supposedly insulting and disrespecting
because she never saw them or knew about their not standing, and if she did she would not care... i guarantee it
she has more important things to care about im sure
but i bet you that if folks in the stands would have started a ruckus over those guys who didnt stand up that she would have cared
and it would have sucked if that ruckus would have interrupted the ceremony to honor her

but then again fuck those guys, i totally understand where you are coming from emotionally
im just saying that sometimes these are the type of emotions we need to sublimate a little better

I think the most disappointing thing is that when surrounded by so much privilege people can so easily take it for granted. And I'm sure we all do it to some extent when we are so far removed from real danger. Spoiled for sure. In all likelihood I will never have to worry about an actual war breaking out where I live, nor will I have to worry about military aggression towards me or my family in our home. And maybe our military is used inappropriately at times for corporate interests, and maybe this lady joined the military as a way to pay for college and not out of duty, but at some level the military and the people who serve are providing us the protection to worry about things like gay marriage, tax rates, and who will play 2B for the Dodgers. And that deserves respect.

I don't think it's hyperbole to say we can't stand enough, honor enough, and thank enough the men and women who serve in our military. Those people mindlessly sitting in their seats, while probably not meaning disrespect, are still self-absorbed, spoiled fucks. You are right to think fuck them.
