Nick Cafardo Ranks Don Mattingly No. 17 Manager In Baseball
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation — 4 hours ago

Over the last few weeks, ranking Minor League prospects, a team’s chances to win the division or World Series, or the worst and best offseason moves has been en vogue.

That’s generally been met with a positive outlook for the Los Angeles Dodgers as their farm system houses three premier names, and the Major-League team is expected to compete for another National League West division title and first World Series berth since 1988. Adding to the various rankings that have already been released is the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo.

Cafardo ranked all MLB managers heading into the 2015 season using the following criteria:

For the past few years leading into spring training we’ve attempted managerial rankings. They are based on my opinions and the opinions of the many people around baseball I speak with during the course of the week.

The rankings factor in recent performance and track record. Obviously, a manager’s performance is tied into the talent on his roster and his ability to push that talent to positive results.

As such, Cafardo has Dodgers manager Don Mattingly No. 17, crediting him for keeping order in the clubhouse:

    17. Don Mattingly, Dodgers — Kudos for being able to handle such a complicated roster. Mattingly had to deal with Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig, etc. Mattingly had smoke coming out of his head at times, but he survived. He now has a team with fewer headaches, but one that perhaps isn’t as talented. New management stuck with him.
Since succeeding Joe Torre as manager in 2011, Mattingly has guided the Dodgers to consecutive trips to the postseason by way of winning the NL West division. He’s a career 354-293 and finished in second place for NL Manager of the Year in 2013.

While Mattingly undeniably has succeeded in keeping a clubhouse with large personalities in order, he’s also come under fire for his in-game management. Following the 2013 season, his bench coach and close friend Trey Hillman was fired. Tim Wallach replaced Hillman last season and will hold the same role in 2015 as the entire coaching staff was retained.

Amid the roster and front office turnover, Mattingly has been one constant in the dugout. However, if he’s unable to guide the Dodgers to more than a trip to the NL Division Series, his tenure with the team may come to an end.

Included below is Cafardo’s complete ranking of Major League managers:

Farrell runs the Red Sox into the cellar and he gets #11.

    We're fucked again.

Team mentality with a mental midget for a manager.

Can they win in the post season in spite of him?

    That is the question.

    We lose in round one.

Dum Dum is going to have issues again.

He has 7 positions (not counting C) to shuffle and keep all of these guys happy.

    Ethier
    C.C.
    Joc
    Guerrero
    Rollings
    HK
    SVS
    Turner
    Urine

Without regular playing, all of them other than Turner would suffer.

Obviously HK and Rollins are the middle infielders with Urine at 3B and Adrian at 1B, but if Guerrero stays dialed in and you've got those guys, with Joc and C.C. and perhaps Ethier all in the zone, it will become a problem and we already know Dum Dum can't handle it.

I see a lot more offense this season because of the re-tooled top of the order. This team on paper, is better than last year's team. Offensively speaking. I've still not a lot faith in the pen or the back of the rotation at the moment but the first month will be telling.

Team mentality will be key. I think these guys have it and I am not worried about Ethier becoming a problem. He's already proven he is not the Chinchilla when it come to his unhappiness.

    A) Does anyone care if Ethier is happy?
    B) Who the fuck is Rollings?
    3) Depending on the development of Guerrero and Joc, and also depending on what happens with Ethier, SVS could have a short tenure in Blue. Then there is also Oliveras to take into consideration.

Mattingly Provides Solution To Beating Shifts
by Tyler Monroy | Dodgers Nation — 28 minutes ago

The new commissioner of baseball, Rob Manfred recently discussed the idea of banning defensive shifts, but Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly believes shifts could become irrelevant if hitters make adjustments at the plate.

Mattingly is no stranger to offensive adjustments. He was a career .307 hitter in 14 seasons and led the American league in 1984 with a .343 batting average. He believes that if hitters were to use the whole field while hitting, defensive shifts would no longer be used.

The manager discussed these ideas in an interview with Tracy Ringolsby of MLB.com:

“A good way is to use the whole field and keep the ball in play,” he said during a chat with the media on Thursday. “We’ve got a whole generation that wants to sit and spin and see how far they can hit the ball into the seats. They aren’t using the whole field.”

Manfred clarified his position on infield shifts recently during a Dodgers spring game, and stated that his words were bit misconstrued. The commissioner stated that although shifts may be the problem, hitters could adjust in the next year or two and the league would not need to ban them.

According to Baseball Info Solutions, between 2011-2013, the amount of defensive shifts rose nearly 245 percent. Two years ago, 8,134 shifts were used on balls in play.

However, Mattingly has a valid counter-argument to Manfred’s ideas. Baseball is a game of adjustments. A batter must adjust to pitches, infielders must adjust to the different infields they play on, outfielders must adjust on flyballs according to the sun. Therefore, hitters should have to adjust to infield shifts.

For example, Ichiro Suzuki of the Miami Marlins is perhaps one of the most consistent hitter in the MLB. The outfielder had over 200 hits in each of his first ten seasons and is a career .317 hitter, and has almost as many hits to the opposite field as he has pulled.

Players that can adjust will be the most successful in the MLB, which is why hitters should simply adjust to the infield shifts rather than have the league ban them.

No one will argue his knowledge of hitting.

It is his inability to manage a game that kills him and every Dodgers fan on the planet.

After having a guy like Maddon in the dugout in Tampon Bay, AF has got to be scratching his head after this series and fully understanding how far out of their league Frank and Ned were.

Alex Guerrero left on the outside looking In
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation — 5 hours ago

Just as the outfield has been in recent seasons when all players are healthy, third base was a juggling act of sorts for Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. When players reported for Spring Training Juan Uribe was the incumbent starter and there was no reason to believe that would change.

However, after a slow spring coupled with strong showings from Alex Guerrero and Justin Turner, Uribe fell down the depth chart in what’s a contract year. After frequently splitting time with Turner at the corner, Guerrero now appears to have suffered a similar fate as Uribe.

Additionally, Guerrero’s playing time in left field has also decreased. The Cuban native last played a game at third base on May 24; his last time in left was June 9. Guerrero has otherwise been relegated to pinch-hitting duty, which is something he’s excelled at this season.

In 19 games as a pinch-hitter, Guerrero is batting .333/.368/.889 with three home runs and an MLB-best eight RBIs. “He really has been good off the bench, and not quite as good when he starts. It’s part of the equation,” Mattingly said. As a starter Guerrero is batting .268/.298/.536 with six home runs and 16 RBIs over 28 games.

The Dodgers’ manager also confirmed Sunday what has become obvious. “It’s pretty much Justin, and then who it is when Justin gets rest,” he answered when asked what’s taken into account when writing in a starter at third base and setting the lineup.

While the fifth-year manager backed Turner as the primary starter, it doesn’t equate to him viewing Guerrero solely as a left fielder. “I look at him as a guy that can play third and can play left,” he said. Mattingly added he believes Guerrero is more comfortable at third base by virtue of being a natural infielder.

Mattingly credited Turner for being “the whole package,” though will continue to provide plenty of rest for the 30 year old by sticking to a plan of not playing Turner more than three consecutive games. Ideally, he said, Turner starts three games, gets a day of rest, starts the next two and receives another game off — essentially playing five of seven games.

The Dodgers appear value Guerrero’s bat over his defense, which figured to make their two-game Interleague series that begins Monday an opportunity for him to be in the lineup as the designated hitter. “That would be a good position [DH] for him,” Mattingly said.

However, Guerrero isn’t in Monday’s lineup against the Texas Rangers. Adrian Gonzalez is instead the DH with Turner moving over to first base and Alberto Callaspo filling in at third. That decision can be traced to Mattingly saying his preference is to utilize the DH spot to get players rest, as opposed to dedicating it to a bat off the bench.

With Carl Crawford and Scott Van Slyke expected to return, albeit the two are on vastly different timetables, and Hector Olivera’s presumed arrival in the Majors, games in which Guerrero starts may further become few and far between.

    great idea donnie
and what a motivator you must be, immediately inspiring the troops to 0-7 with risp and 7 lob
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, bubba... but the guys don't respond to you
you're not a leader; the team wins [periodically] in spite of you -- not because of you
maybe it should have been a players only meeting
because if not for a fluke last night, you would [and quite honestly -- should] have been swept
your guys are great against shit teams like the d'bags and padres
but suck alpaca testes against good teams like the cardinals and giants
and speaking of the giants... the next three days should be interesting
and this is how bad it has gotten.....
i would be more than willing for us to get swept if it resulted in your inept ass getting fired
any idea how much that hurts a dodger fan to admit? probably not, so let me put it in perspective for you...
imagine a yankee fan being willing to get swept by the chowds if it meant girardi getting fired
    got it now?
but keep doing what you're doing -- resting all your starters on one day, putting guerrero in the doghouse (for your own selfish reasons), throwing rollins out there day after day, all that stuff...
i mean it's all worked so far, right? <<< sarcasm alert
you know that saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?
    well it's broke, bubba
has been for a long time
and the only way to fix it is to get your dumb ass outta there
mark my words -- this team will never succeed with you at the helm
having you manage the dodgers is like having a retard behind the wheel of a ferrari...
bad things are bound to happen

Mattingly reveals team meeting was held
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation — 4 hours ago

After losing a third consecutive game to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly alluded to there being frustration in the clubhouse. He thought Clayton Kershaw embodied that frustration on an up-and-down evening, and the Dodgers’ ace later called the outing arguably one of the more frustrating games he’s thrown.

When asked postgame Wednesday if he had held a team meeting, Mattingly said he hadn’t. That changed prior to Thursday’s game when the fifth-year manager revealed he met with his club earlier in the day. Mattingly didn’t divulge any particulars from the meeting, other than to say, “it was about baseball. Simple stuff.”

Mattingly wasn’t aware of the Pablo Sandoval incident that led to the Boston Red Sox third baseman getting benched Thursday for admitting to ‘liking’ a photo on Instagram from his cell phone during Wednesday’s game. The Dodgers skipper said he wasn’t surprised by it and said his team adheres to Major League Baseball’s policies.

It can be presumed the Dodgers’ hitting woes was at the center of the meeting given Mattingly’s repeated calls for the need to have quality at-bats. The Dodgers are 6-4 in their last 10 games and have scored more than three runs in only four games over that span and have regularly stranded runners in scoring position.

The meeting didn’t pay immediate dividends as the Dodgers were 0-for-7 with RISP on Thursday night and left seven men on base. They squandered a Yasiel Puig one-out triple in the first inning one night after failing to cash in on a leadoff double in different innings.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers had they first two runners reach on walks. However, the promising situation led to Kiké Hernandez standing on third base with two outs only one batter later. Hernandez drew a balk leading to a walk-off 1-0 win.

Next up for the Dodgers are the rival San Francisco Giants, struggling in their own right at 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Giants enter the series knowing they’re 7-2 against Los Angeles this season.

After concluding the three-game set with San Francisco, the Dodgers will hit the road for a 10-game trip. They’re just 12-18 away from Dodger Stadium this season and are averaging 3.9 runs scored per game.
