LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the hiring of Andrew Friedman to the newly created position of President, Baseball Operations. The club also announced that Ned Colletti will remain with the Dodger organization as a Senior Advisor to the President and CEO Stan Kasten.
Friedman will be available to the media at a news conference tomorrow at Dodger Stadium, with details to be announced later today.
Friedman, 37, previously served as the Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations of the Tampa Bay Rays, where, despite overseeing one of the league's lowest payrolls, he led the Rays to four postseason appearances, including two division titles (2008, 2010), in nine seasons from 2006-14. Under Friedman, the Rays posted the franchise's first winning season and won the American League pennant in 2008, when he was named Sporting News' Executive of the Year. After finishing below .500 in each of its first 10 years of existence, the Rays finished above the .500 mark in six consecutive seasons under Friedman from 2008-13.
"Andrew Friedman is one of the youngest and brightest minds in the game today and we are very fortunate to have him join our organization," said Dodger President & CEO Stan Kasten. "The success he has had over the past nine years in molding the Tampa Bay Rays team has been incredible."

"Ned Colletti has played a major role in the success of the Los Angeles Dodgers over the last nine years and I'm thrilled that we are able to retain him as a special advisor to me," said Kasten. "Ned's knowledge and experience in the game covering 33 years will be a great asset to the club as we continue to add and build our player development system."

    http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/...ers-hire-ex-tampa-bay-rays-gm-andrew-friedman

Landing the 37-year-old Friedman is a coup for the Dodgers. A handful of teams have tried unsuccessfully to poach the talented young executive with a Wall Street background, who piloted the small-market, budget-conscious Rays to six consecutive winning seasons and four playoff appearances after taking over in 2008.
"Andrew Friedman is one of the youngest and brightest minds in the game today and we are very fortunate to have him join our organization," Kasten said in a statement. "The success he has had over the past nine years in molding the Tampa Bay Rays team has been incredible."
This season, however, the Rays finished fourth in the American League East (77-85) after trading away ace left-hander David Price to the Detroit Tigers in order in order to get a return on the former Cy Young Award winner before he could leave as a free agent after next season.
In Los Angeles, where the Dodgers had the highest payroll in baseball last season and an ownership group that's shown a willingness to spend since purchasing the team for $2.15 billion in 2012, Friedman will have no such financial pressures to manage.

no need for a GM... he should run the show... another layer will just create problems... Baseball VP/GM works fine...

now lets hope he retains Logan...

this could mean a couple things:

    1. Hanley gets a QO, but no big contract
    2. 2 of the OF might be gone to clear room for Pederson
    3. the BP will get fixed with effective/no name pitchers

    Awesome

Who knows what he can do for 2015 since there's already a lot committed but this is fantastic fucking news. I think he could get us a good bullpen and set us up so we win the division from here on out

We just got significantly smarter, this makes me excited for the Dodgers again so soon after the heartbreak

    So what is he?

I see people saying he's the GM, that he runs baseball operations and that we kept Ned, or he's gone.

    What's the deal?

He's theoretically what Theo Epstein is to the Cubs. They still have their GM Jed Hoyer, but Epstein pretty much oversees everything.

He's president of baseball ops. He'll be Theo Epstein basically with the Cubs and now he has to hire a GM. Ned is senior advisor to Kasten, which is a cushy job with very little pressure and well paid which is why he's staying on probably

@BillShaikin: Source: Friedman's plan for now is to move forward with Mattingly as manager in 2015. #Dodgers

I remember starting a thread on PSD years ago bragging about how underrated Freidman is and how good he has been for Tampa. Safe to say I love this move

President of Baseball Operations. Like IBB said, he's what Theo is

He will hire a new GM, and he pretty much will oversee and be involved in everything baseball related. It's kinda hard knowing without having inside info but I would assume he's pretty much the head man for baseball stuff and the GM is his #2. That GM is probably gonna be a good hire and the Dodgers will have plenty of smart people at the helm

I don't hate it to be honest.

Mattingly did some silly things but is their really an obvious upgrade out there? Even Joe Maddon bunts quite a bit (and Mattingly significantly decreased this year) AND in order to get him we would need to trade something for him and that's just lame to me.

Maddon's greatest attribute is that he has an understanding of what the front office has in mind for their team, and if Friedman can develop this relationship with Mattingly then it's fine. Mattingly has already shown he can deal with this team on a personal level, and in-game moves are gonna be bad by almost most managers

@pgammo: @johnmanuelba And allow small markets easier access to international talent. Hear Logan White moves up here

Kind of a lowkey breaking news from Gammons. Assume he's talking about White moving up to GM.

    Amazing news

In regards to Mattingly its not like AF is gonna just sit there and let mattingly make dumb mistake after dumb mistake. He'll prob let him know what things he should fix and then let Mattingly do his thing from there.

Im mostly excited because of player development and presumably a higher emphasis on analytics

Maddon said the Dodgers would be able to afford to apply all the analysis that the Rays sometimes could not.
"You’ll have all the advanced thinking in the game," Maddon said, "all the metrics, all the data. You’ll be on the cutting edge of everything. You’ll be able to afford any mind or any machine, to create whatever edge you can."
