lol, must be losing sleep due to inactivity
i'm no doctor, but i have a recommendation regardless... fucken do something!
i don't want to hear that we're not in on guys like lester, scherzer or miller
we should be in on anybody and everybody!
what happened to the supposed deep pockets?
when you have more money than your competitors, spending wisely is a relative term
and btw, not spending doesn't count... you have to actually spend to spend wisely

Zaidi Losing Sleep Over Big-Name Free Agents
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation -- 1 hour ago

Thus far in free agency the Los Angeles Dodgers have largely been bystanders as they’ve focused on retooling the front office.

The Dodgers did extend a qualifying offer to Hanley Ramirez, which was more of a formality as it appears unlikely he’ll be re-signed. On Monday, the Dodgers lost out on Russell Martin, who they were believed to be interested in, though talks between the two parties reportedly never got serious.

With multiple marquee free agents still on the market, Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi is focused on making “good baseball decision” that would coincide with a large payroll. With the resources to pursue big names, Zaidi said it’s led to sleepless nights, according to ESPN LA’s Mark Saxon:

In my last job, I never had to lose any sleep wondering about whether to pursue a big-name free agent and there are sleepless nights now,” Zaidi said. “That’s the easiest way to say it. I don’t mean to be cavalier in saying that, but that’s sort of the reality. We have to think about everybody.”

Like Andrew Friedman, Zaidi joins the Dodgers after having spent his career with a small market team. Although Stan Kasten, Friedman and Zaidi have left the door open for the Dodgers to again carry a substantial payroll, the desired direction is decrease it.

Among the players available that would command a large contract, Jon Lester and Max Scherzer are the headliners. While the Dodgers were linked to Lester at the trading deadline, the same hasn’t been true during free agency.

The demand for Andrew Miller could lead to the reliever signing a lucrative contract and while the Dodgers need bullpen help, they haven’t been tied to the lefty. As players begin to sign new contracts, the market will unfold and with it should come more clarity on the team’s direction.

Meh, I still say the major additions will come via trade rather than free agency.

Winter meetings are coming up soon, I'm guessing that's where the action is for the Dodgers.

Can't really judge him until the offseason is over. Martin is the first of the big FA's to sign, and it was Toronto. That was out of left field, no matter Martin's connection with the team due to them being in Canada.

Thanksgiving hasn't even got here, they have a lot of time.

for the dodges sake, i hope this isn't true. It would mean they are in way over their heads, they aren't new to baseball.

They are not new to baseball but they are new to the organization. Would you want the FO to make a rash trade because they didn't know what they were trading?

of course not.....but I do expect given their old jobs and the success they had that know about more than just their old teams. It's their job and they are supposedly the best around at it.

Most of the guys in my fantasy league can tell you about every roster in the league and much of their farm systems highlights.....and they have day jobs.

They may have a working knowledge but no way they know EVERYONE in the organization to make a true informed decision or there wouldn't be bad trades. Remember too 1 persons evaluation can differ markedly from the other and couple that with the fact that they are ALL from different places and you could have uncertainty. Not saying it's why we haven't addressed the roster but it's a mitigating factor I believe.

I forgot to mention that John Hart was a special assistant for 4 months during the season which allowed for time to make a trade, just a thought.

You guys saying it's not the winter meetings......you do realize that is generally considered the end of the hot stove season don't you? Shit is happening on many rosters out there, y'all might want to get in on some of it.

No it doesn't, 2nd tier players remaining get signed and they hand a few pointless awards.

Many big names are unsigned but all of them are meeting with teams and the offers are starting to come in.

Maybe I'm wrong and all those years in Tampa thought him how to court big time free agents and waiting another month to get of your ass is the way to play it. I seriously fucking doubt it though.

If the dodgers wait until the end of December to start playing the game, get ready for the big news to read " the dodgers would like you to join us in welcoming back Chad Billingsly"

I said it a month ago and still believe the same thing. There will be no big signings of FA's. We will trade an OF and call it a day.

On the bright side there haven't been any rumors, other than OF trade news about FA's attributed to us and every year there are a couple of surprises.

If they don't know what we've got, and who is capable of doing what, then they can kiss my ass. Who needs another result like Ned brought us for so many years. It doesn't matter how we get there (or rather how we don't get there), it's the bottom line that counts. There are lots of ways to reach mediocrity and also to lose in the playoffs, and the genius NerdCo may be another way to do it, sadly.
I know it's not nearly enough time to make a rational judgement on them, but if Zaidi comes out with statements as Irish posted, IMO, that's head shakingly shit we absolutely DO NOT need to hear or read. Not with the SF Giants with another world championship under their belt.
What a fucking stupid statement from this guy.

A little harsh give the fact that they've been in power less than a month but I sense your frustration and can't completely disagree. Maybe he's just using poker tactics and not giving away possible moves who knows but there is pedigree there. Remember too that there haven't been an significant movement on the big FA's by anyone. As you can see from the following article that they haven't even finished shaping the FO.

    http://www.dodgersnation.com/dodger...-finley-jack-cressend-jeff-pickler/2014/11/18

"The new hires tie up a few loose ends the Dodgers had and now likely allows them to place the majority of their focus on roster moves."

these additions are beginning to annoy me
all these new chiefs, and no new indians
i'll try [emphasis on try; no promises] to remain patient and reserve final judgement until after the winter meetings
but i'm getting really frustrated :gah:

^I'm with you IF other teams have made significant moves. Everything is slow at this point.

true, but at least other teams are talking to players
i understand wanting to try and shed payroll
but, it should in no way prevent/limit us from pursuing players who could make this team better
a lot of people have compared us to the late 90's/early 2000's yankees
    bullshit
nothing prevented them from going after whoever they wanted
did the hideki irabu or jose contreras failings stop steinbrenner from continuing to spend?
    no
in fact he kept spending more
    winning was always his priority

    meh, just venting
