Marlins fire GM Jennings as they hire Mattingly as manager
    ESPN.com news services — October 30, 2015

MIAMI -- The Marlins won't be retaining Dan Jennings in a front-office role after all, ending a 13-year association with the team that included an awkward move in May from general manager to manager.

The Marlins confirmed the firing Thursday hours after they reportedly hired Don Mattingly as manager.

Team officials said after the season that Jennings would resume his old job, and he was under contract through 2018 and reportedly owed $4.5 million.

But he didn't return to the front office and hadn't been involved in offseason decisions. He had long been close to owner Jeffrey Loria, but their relationship soured after Jennings moved to the dugout.

Team president David Samson said he proposed firing Jennings, and Loria agreed.

President of baseball operations Michael Hill will handle the responsibilities of GM, as he has done since Jennings gave up the job.

Daily Sports Pages is reporting a phone call between Samson, Loria and Jennings went as follows:

SAMSON/LORIA: "Hi Dan, we've got some good news!"
    JENNINGS: "Great, what is it?"
SAMSON/LORIA: "We just hired Don Mattingly to be your manager!"
    JENNINGS: [CLICK!!!]
    SAMSON/LORIA: "Hello? Dan? Hello?

"I just thought the way it was running since the middle of May was the way it should continue to run," Samson said. "The ideas that Michael has as to how to turn this around are ideas that I think are right."

Jennings was the first major league skipper with no experience as a manager or big league player since Braves owner Ted Turner managed his team for one game in 1977. He had worked with Hill on the Marlins' personnel side since 2002.

"It was sad for me and Michael," Samson said. "When you've been working with people for a long time, it's tough. But Dan agreed it was a heck of a run. We won a World Series together; we finished in last place together."

Jennings became manager when Miami fired Mike Redmond after a 16-22 start. The change failed to spark a turnaround, and the Marlins finished 71-91.

The move to fire Jennings comes the same day the Marlins reportedly hired Mattingly as manager. Mattingly was added less than a week after he parted with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to multiple reports.

    vinny on mattingly’s departure...

"You know, over the years – and that's a lot of years – I've seen teams that are supposed to win and lose, and I've seen them let the manager go. Management has to make a move. The fans are unhappy, understandably, they're disappointed, they're frustrated, and now you're going to start another year. So, what you're saying to them, in essence, he's a terrific guy and we love him and he did a good job, but we need a new fresh, driving spirit for 2000-and whatever year."

    Marlins fire Mattingly as manager
    ESPN.com news services — June 30, 2017

MIAMI -- The Marlins won't be retaining Don Mattingly after all, ending a 19-month association with the team that included an awkward move in 2015 from lame duck Dodgers manager to Nitwit Miami manager.

The Marlins confirmed the firing hours after they reportedly hired Juan Pierre as manager.

Team officials said after the slow season start that Mattingly would resume his blatant lap licking prior to managing, and will become an advisor to Joe Torre.

Team president David Samson said he proposed firing Mattingly in April, and Loria finally agreed.

Daily Sports Pages is reporting a phone call between Loria and Mattingly went as follows:

LORIA: "Hi Don, I've got some good news!"
    Mattingly: "Great, what is it?"
LORIA: "I just hired Juan Pierre to be our manager!"
    Mattingly: That's awesome. Which level?
    LORIA: "Here"
    Mattingly: Where are you?
Loria: In your office. Hello? Don?

"I just thought the way it was running since the middle of December 2015 wasn't the way it should continue to run," Samson said. "The ideas that Don had as to how to turn this around are ideas that I think we're beyond unique but it was Loria's choice so I went with it."

"It was sad for me" Samson said. "When you've been working with people for a long time, it's tough. But Don agreed it was a heck of a run. We won a potato sack together; we finished in last place at a skee ball tourney together. This was hard."

Mattingly became manager after the Dodgers were smart enough to cut him loose in late October 2015 after three straight post season failures of biblical proportions.

The move to fire Mattingly comes the same day the Marlins reportedly hired Pierre as their new manager. Mattingly was asked to comment regarding the sudden announcement and hiring of Pierre. He had only one word.

of course the kid stole the show
he's far more interesting and intelligent than any other member of the mattingly family

    Mattingly introduced as Marlins manager
Miami and former Dodgers manager Don Mattingly made the hiring official today. But let's be honest, his son Louie absolutely stole the show.

Best hire they could make without a front office in place. At least they targeted him early and can sell the name to all the New Yorkers living in Miami

    it is a good hire
i never disliked mattingly the person
i just thought he was a poor fit here
not his fault, he just wasn't prepared to lead a team with WS expectations

    lol donnie
you might "plan" on being there 10 years
but you'll be lucky to make it to half of the four years they signed you for
and that's not necessarily a reflection of your managing prowess...
that's just how they do down there
    so good luck bubba

Marlins welcome Mattingly as “right long-term solution”
    ESPN.com news services — 4 hours ago

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins, who have gone through seven managers since 2010, are hoping Don Mattingly is here to stay, as they introduced him as the team's "long-term solution" on Monday.

"I plan on being here at least 10," Mattingly said of his new four-year deal.

Mattingly was hired last week, and Monday's news conference was delayed until after the World Series. He parted with the Los Angeles Dodgers last month.

"Hiring a manager is one of the most important decisions a team can make, which is why it was so important for us to find the right long-term solution," Marlins owner and CEO Jeffrey Loria said.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Don Mattingly to the Marlins family. ... Don's brand of strong and focused leadership is exactly what this team of talented players needs to help us compete at the highest level."

Mattingly said his biggest concern about taking the job was the Marlins' past tendencies to "start over."

"That was probably my biggest fear," Mattingly said. "Are they going to blow it up and start over?"

With the change in jobs, Mattingly will face a big adjustment regarding resources. The Dodgers led the majors by far this year with a payroll of $289.6 million at the end of the regular season; Miami ranked last at $64.9 million, and the Marlins plan only a small increase in 2016.

Mattingly said the tight budget doesn't bother him.

"The consensus around baseball is that this is a talented club with a good core that has a chance to grow and develop," he said. "For me, that was the single biggest thing -- the chance to develop, teach and mold a young club and build toward winning the division and winning the championship."

Miami has a roster full of young, talented players led by slugger Giancarlo Stanton and ace Jose Fernandez.

Mattingly becomes Loria's first high-profile managerial hire since Ozzie Guillen four years ago. Guillen was fired after one troubled season, and his four-year contract just came off the books.

Mattingly stepped down as manager of the Dodgers on Oct. 22 with one year remaining on his contract. The Dodgers won 55 percent of their regular-season games in his five seasons (446-363), and he led the Dodgers to three straight National League West titles, a first in franchise history.

But he went 8-11 in the postseason. The Dodgers have not reached the World Series since winning the title in 1988 and lost to the New York Mets this year in the NL Division Series.

Including interim hires, Mattingly will be the Marlins' eighth manager since 2010 and the 15th to assume the role since the franchise began play in 1993. Just five of those 15 have managed at least 100 games with the Marlins, and of those five, only Jack McKeon, who managed for four seasons, had a winning record (281-257).

"We wanted this to be the last manager's press conference we ever did," Marlins president David Samson said. "We've done too many."

The Marlins began their search earlier this month after it was determined that Dan Jennings would not return in the role next season after making the unusual move from general manager to manager when the Marlins fired Mike Redmond in May after a 16-22 start.

The change failed to spark a turnaround, and the injury-riddled Marlins finished 71-91 in their sixth consecutive losing season.

Jennings was fired as GM last Thursday. Michael Hill will handle the responsibilities of GM in addition to his duties as team president, as he has done since Jennings gave up the job.

Mattingly was a six-time All-Star and a .307 hitter with the New York Yankees from 1982 to 1995. Loria is a New Yorker and Yankees fan.
