From the Dodgers’ public relations department:

Chris Withrow underwent an examination by Dr. ElAttrache on May 23rd to evaluate pain in his right elbow. Dr. Elattrache diagnosed his problem as a tear of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament and recommended Tommy John surgery. He was subsequently placed on the Major League disabled list. Withrow is seeking a second opinion next week and will proceed with further treatment.

Withrow had a 2.95 ERA with 10 hits allowed, 18 walks and 28 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings this season. In his career, Withrow has a 2.73 ERA with 30 hits, 31 walks and 71 strikeouts in 63 innings, and has stranded all 16 runners he has inherited in his career.

The 25-year-old righty faced 11 batters and allowed five runs in the Dodgers’ massive 18-7 loss to Arizona on May 17, then came back to pitch two-thirds of an inning (hitting one batter) on May 20 in New York before being optioned to the minors.

Drafted in the first round in 2007 by the Dodgers out of Midland Christian (Texas) High School, Withrow was limited to four innings in 2008 because of injuries. Mostly used as a starter from 2009-12, Withrow’s career took off when he was moved full-time to the bullpen. He had a 1.71 ERA and 33 strikeouts against 38 baserunners in 26 1/3 innings with Triple-A Albuquerque in 2013 when he wasn’t pitching for the Dodgers.

    Updated: May 29, 2014, 1:28 PM ET

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Chris Withrow has been diagnosed with a ligament tear in his right elbow and has been told he needs Tommy John surgery.

The team said Thursday that the right-hander was examined last week by a team physician, who diagnosed a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. He is seeking a second opinion before deciding on surgery.

Withrow went on the disabled list and will proceed after consulting another doctor next week. Last week, Withrow was demoted to Triple-A Albuquerque. He had a 2.95 ERA in 20 appearances for the Dodgers this season, with 28 strikeouts and 18 walks in 21 1/3 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .143 batting average.

There have been 20 pitchers in 2014 that have undergone Tommy John surgery.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Man. Not sure how long this has been a problem for him, but you wouldn't notice it the way he's thrown this year.

I really don't believe you just said that.

Bullpen arms are a dime a dozen. You could literally start a line outside the gates and keep marching them through. You move 2nd tier prospects for bullpen arms. I know Hanley hasn't been Manly so far, but to let him go for bullpen arms belongs to the Kevin Towers School of General Management.

believe it. that's what i think about Hanley right now.

if the line of teams that have interest in a struggling pending free agent like Hanley were a long one, i'd agree. but you get what you can for him now. would i be looking for trashy bp arms or just accept any old bums? no. i'd want young/power arms..possibly ones that were seen as starters that can be coverted, but that doesn't even mean i'd get them because of what i mentioned above..Hanley's not a sexy pick up for anybody. he's a shot in the dark.

Nah, Kevin Towers would trade Hanley for someone like Martin Prado and call him one of the best hitters in baseball.
