Homegrown ace of the rotation is going to be a Dodger for a long, long, long time. I couldn't be happier. Leave it to Guggs to put the Posey and Verlander extensions on the back pages of today's news.

I'm sure their would be a 9th year option that would vest if he were to finish top 5 in Cy Young voting in 2020 or something that would make it richer than what Verlander's deal could be, it already is in-terms of guaranteed money.

Kind of overpaying in my opinion. I doubt CK would be demanding so much...if he is I'd be very dissapointed. I expect some discount for covering his ARB years.

    Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers Discussing Deal
By Charlie Wilmoth [March 29, 2013 at 5:56pm CST]

Pitcher Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers are discussing a contract extension, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The news that Kershaw and the Dodgers are talking about a deal comes on the heels of big new contract extensions for Justin Verlander and Buster Posey.

Heyman notes that Kershaw could be in an even better negotiating position than Verlander was, given that he is only 25 and the Dodgers have shown a willingness to spend freely. Kershaw is slated to become a free agent after the 2014 season. The only downside for Kershaw, Heyman notes, is that he is slated to make $11MM this year and is arbitration-eligible in 2014, whereas Verlander was already under contract for $40MM through 2014 before his extension. Verlander's deal made him the highest-paid pitcher in MLB history. Depending on the length of the extension, Kershaw would be likely to exceed Verlander's $180MM deal.

On Kershaw: I still think deal gets done by Sun PM to avoid ODay conflict. However, starting to think my orig $200m figure may be 10% light

So $220M over 8 years? Wow!

Probably wants to have the highest AAV during his free agent years. (the last 6)

He'll probably give half of it away to charity. Definitely don't think he's being selfish, and if there is a pitcher who deserves it I suppose it is him. But on the same token, he is a PITCHER. 220 million is a LOT of mula.

To top Verlander during the free agent years, they would need to allocate at least $169M to years 3-8 for an average of $28.17M. So either they will top it by more, perhaps a full million making in $29M, and the last 6 years totaling $174M, leaving $46M to spread over the first 2 years. Or it will be closer to $169M leaving roughly $51M over first 2 years.

Personally, I think he gets 6/174 in years 3-8, for whatever reason the extensions given have had an even AAVs, Felix: 5/135 (27 Per), Verlander: 5/140 (28 per). However, I don't think CK gets $46M over the first 2 years. If I were a betting man, i'd say he gets a raise to $18M this year and breaks Timmy's arb record in 2014 by getting $24M, totaling 8/216.
