I just read a story about Guerrero, in which it states that "the Dodgers can't say if he can play second base"... Now I don't want to rehash the old GM BS again, but shouldn't there be a fucking clue by somebody where this guy can bring his glove? And since most everyone seems to say "I wouldn't give him that much or that many years, etc", isn't it imperative to have some FO guy know just a bit about where he can play before giving him 28 million dollars? And if he starts the season in AAA (or lower....gasp), I predict he will be the richest minor league ballplayer out there. Unless some other duflus assholes paid another guy more, but don't have a clue if he can play where they need him. Call me cranky, but this appears, on the surface anyway, a bit of a cluster fuck.
They get rid of Mark, Skip, Punto, etc. because they wanted to "get younger and more athletic". What good does youth and athleticism do if you can't make the plays? You have a guy who isn't adapting to 2B, and his backup is Dee Gordon....should be fun seeing them try to turn a double play. Hanley, Guerrero/Dee, AJ, and Kemp is our line of defense up the middle. Great thinking Ned. He botched this one. Hanley has worked hard to improve defensively and he has...but still.
He's a natural SS but of course we have HanRam, but all indications are that it will be a work in progress and they say his power is his real strength, we will see.
If Guerrero, a natural SS, can't grasp 2B then if he hits like crazy in spring maybe move him to 3rd. I thought the scouting on him was that he had experience at the position, but had not played 2B. Uribe last played 2B in 2011, but he still has 220 games of above average defense at the position under his belt. This is of course an absolute worst case scenario, like if he just has no clue what he is doing over there.
I am not sure why this is a last resort. It may be something that should be looked at in the coming weeks. If he can play adequate third and has the arm of SS--why not switch them? Uribe's defense is great no matter where he plays. He got his two year contract. He can shut up and do what it best for the team. If this guys bat is legit, he should be in the lineup even if it means that Uribe is upset a bit.
I meant last resort in case he can't handle 2B at all, like the team sees no hope for him. If his bat is as valuable as they say it will be, I would rather seem him work out the kinks in the minors for a couple months if it means for the next 4-5 years, we have a dangerous power bat at 2B.
fat Uribe tryin to turn double plays at his advanced age...i just don't know. he's gonna hurt himself and then what? it's not nearly the same as Ellis. Ellis is a shrimp. Uribe is a tractor. and i thought Guerrero's arm was one of the reasons why scouts saw him a 2nd baseman?...moving him to 3B? if Guerrero rakes and his defense at 2B is on par with Hanley's defense from last year we'll be fine. i'm not tryin to see Hanley and Uribe up the middle lookin like MLB's World Heavyweight tag team champions.
^Defense: Average athleticism; still moves well despite thicker lower half; may lose a step as he ages; versatile and instinctual defender with quick hands and flashy glove; fast transfer and release; decent body control; actions are too stiff for clean projection at shortstop; average range and arm strength suggests a future at second base.
You the man. Damn, the other options suck. Oh and traderumors has interesting link to a look into the value of Oliver Perez. Pretty interesting stuff. Another lefty?
Another reason to not consider Guerrero for 3B -- long term that position is already accounted for. They need to give him adequate time to adjust to the position they signed him for, and then if he can't meet their need at that spot for the next number of years, they should trade him to a team looking for a SS and move on.
yeh, let's not forget about Seager here, folks. if it comes down to it, fuck it...send 40-50M along with Ethier and buy Brandon Phillips from the Reds and kick him around for a year until Guerrero is ready. 3B is fine as it is. i like that we're solid on the corners in the infield and outfield. if Hanley, Kemp, and Guerrero rake i can deal with less than stellar defense up the middle. i think a lot of clubs in MLB would accept a potential 80HRs from their SS/CF/2B trio and let it ride defensively.
Corey is a projected 3rd baseman but projections are sometimes wrong. He could handle SS in the MLB we just don't know. Speaking of current and future Dodgers here is an article about a former Dodger and class act all the way Michael Young. If anything he will be missed in the clubhouse, great guy. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...ed-hurt-but-loved-every-last-bit-of-it-013014
Good reports coming out about the work ethic of Guerrero. He has been here 2+ weeks and is working his tail off to master 2B. Also trying his hand at English for the first time. We have a wild bunch of guys, but it seems like no matter how wacky they are (Puig, Ryu, Wilson and Kemp even) off the field, they seem to be some of the games hardest workers.
Sorry, I think Puig already took that title. That would be the GuggenGods, and again Puig. Btw, I didn't subtract any points for the obvious typo.
