Dude, they are not 'dropping hints' at cutting payroll. They have been upfront and honest about the subject since the beginning. Since day one they have said they would spend money to keep the team competitive while developing the farm and international markets in order to sustain a competitive level into the future. And that is exactly what has happened.

A 'goal' is something you HOPE to achieve, what they have delineated is methodology to achieve the goal.

You may now argue that their methodology might need to change.

The younger Price for the next 3yrs really is more reasonable. He'll opt out too. If it's true it makes sense

Reads like a big discussion on semantics, imo. Plain and simple. Everyone knows what a goal is...
What's "competitive" anyway? Theoretorically, it's being in competition, no? Big deal...semantics.
Settling for competitive ( the way it's used by thr FO) sucks elephant cock...and insuring a competitive level into the future is not a done deal yet by any means, since it hasn't happened yet. Maybe five years down the road it would be, and that could be claimed, but they "exactly" haven't done shit yet. "Competitive level" means same loser shit as usual also, I guess.
Small sample size and all, of course...but they have given us nothing more than we got from McCourt and Colletti. We were "competitive" under them, too. Whether you liked them or hated them, or whether you love these Nerds, October hasn't changed one iota for Dodger fans...and neither has profits for the owners, whoever they are. Well, maybe better than ever.
Either rebuild or go for it.
    In between is bullshit.

Problem with Price is the all LH rotation. Another thought, if they add a 2nd starter, I am starting to think it will be via trade, I can't imagine they want to tie up 5/80 or something in someone else along with Price/Grienke.

Problem with that is most of the guys aren't ready, Seager will be the SS, Peraza/Kike could get quite a few of the ABs at 2B, but very few of the top pitchers (Urias, JDL, Cotton, Anderson and Holmes) are ready, and Bellinger, Verdugo are names that we can expect to see in 2018 or so. That's when I look for them to try to get under the luxury tax threshold.

They're still gonna be lefty heavy with CK/Anderso/Ryu/Wood and then Julio joining in 2017. But I see no reason why they couldn't say move Wood to the pen or trade a guy or two to reconfigure the rotation if it really is a problem for them.

There's also this assumption that they have to get their #2 starter via free agency. Like Dave Cameron said, this is the off-season to get your corner outfielders as well as starting pitching. Wouldn't shock me if they flipped Puig and/or other pieces for a Sonny Gray and then used that #2 starter/free agent money on one of the corner outfielders instead. If they like the chances of Ryu solidifying the #3 spot and feel the same about Wood/Anderson at the back, Sonny would slot in at #2.

Didn't the Cardinals have an all righty rotation a couple years ago? Didn't really affect them too much.

Well, sure, but then it's lefties that always kill us of course. From Utley and Rollins, to Victorino and Stairs, to Carpenter and Adams, to Murphy and on and on.

I'm not saying balance is unimportant. I just know that you cannot pass on signing Price because of Wood/Ryu/Anderson being lefties. Trade one of them, move one of them to the pen, etc. Just have to make some more moves. It's more important to lock in a capable #2.

Using this logic, why is it that the LHP are so coveted? You always hear.. "And he's left handed"..
This starts early on in a kids baseball career.

    Genuinely just wondering

It's not like Price would be overkill and suddenly we would get worked by a RH heavy lineup. Not many teams out there just crush left handed pitching especially if two of the lefties are CK and Price. If I am not mistaken, the Dodgers were the best at hitting LHP last year and I was banging my head against the wall a good bit when they faced such pitching. Both Ryu and Anderson have reverse splits which would offset that somewhat. Also, a lot of teams bench their LH hitters against LHP so you are more apt to having an unbalanced lineup on the field. Yes you have those rare guys that simply mash LHP, but there are not many of them. A team facing a LHP heavy rotation may choose to give more of their weak LH hitters a day or two off in a series.

I'm not saying that LHPs are bad per say, but having so many that are very average (Anderson, Wood, Ryu (returning from injury)) creating an imbalance, if I have to have 3 guys who are average, i'd rather have some balance.

That being said, you sign Price and figure the rest out later if Greinke goes elsewhere.
