They want a < 200MM payroll and to sell us ALL on their brilliant 3-4 year plan while they ingest that TW $$$$$$ and raise ticket prices up to 40%....

Keep your eyes open, gents, is all I'm sayin'
Getting in the playoffs meant nothing. Everyone knew the division title was all we were gonna get bc they failed to address the shortcomings everyone but them saw.

I dunno if a deadline deal would have gotten us past the Cardinals for the #1 seed but I'd bet we would have been in the ALCS with a solid shot.

He wasn't that type of player with us and no one expected that is my point. It was a great trade at the time and now it can be seen as a trade good for both sides.

Exactly. Dee got to go home and had a chip on his shoulder with something to prove. Who knows if the same result would have happened for us.

The one thing we did miss was his speed. He put so much pressure on the pitcher when he got on base... that was sorely missed this year.

    Wasn't talking about spending
I really don't care to be that team that bought everything it needed
But its frustrating when you add up the moves
I mean in a world of Grienke, Price, Cueto etc are we really going to end up w iwakuma???
    Really?

Others have already made this point, but at the time of the trade there was no way in hell Dee would have been considered an mvp candidate.

We missed that when he was a Dodger as well.
My man had a .300 OBP in the 2nd half of 2014

Any way you slice it EVERYONE is going to pale in comparison to Greinke but that 6th year no way. Having said that I know they are specs I am fully aware of that but DeLeon and Urias are right on the cusp so getting a short term deal pitcher is what we need and if that's Iwakuma I'd be happy but I'm holding out for Maeda. Still December so who knows what will happen in the coming days. Cueto is still out there but I don't think he's coming to us.

No he wasn't. But it's a point worth reiterating, at least to me because he became one. His 2014 was good. They thought they were selling high. Tbey rolled the dice and they lost that one imo. That's all I'm saying.

Putting aside the ire towards the FO, there was no way ANYONE envisioned that season from Dee if you closely examine it. It's also premature to analyze a trade after 1 season.

Then why does this site exist? Should we strictly be discussing Neds moves? Maybe there was no way to predict it, and maybe he wouldn't have had that season in blue. But taking into account his age, cost, and production last yr, I'd say they got the short end of the stick. I didn't predict the yr dee had, and I don't hate the FO (yet). All I know is we were a leadoff hitter away from being a great team.

It's for opinions obviously. Probably should have wrote "many critics of the Dee deal", not necessarily yourself. Not sure why this post ilicited such disdain from you, maybe I'm reading your post incorrectly and for that I apologize.

trading dee was only a mistake only because of how it worked out
but iirc most were in favor of the deal at the time... i was
and although kendrick isn't/wasn't a leadoff hitter he produced well for us
shit happens... mostly to us :sulk:

No disdain, it just seems like everyone is acting like I'm a dick farmer for questioning the deal. Sorry, no ill intended.

Ok, how deep and far apart do you have to plant them?

Seriously, to me it was just the way your post read. Of course in hindsight it's easy to say we traded and all-star. But he wasn't an all-star when we traded him. As a matter of fact he was in decline, having a worse 2nd half, which made the deal seem more favorable. No one knew he would have a great year. As always though, I want to see him repeat it before I worship at his alter.

Yep, every credible analyst at the time said we stole from the Marlins. We flipped Dee for 3 solid pieces and a better second baseman.

It's of course easy to sit back and complain about it a year later though.

I was not in favor of trading Dee. I was in the minority.
Im not a fan of low OBP guys who arent whizzes at SS defensively.
He needs to hit over .315 in order to make him a worthwhile leadoff hitter with that low walk rate.
His steals are great, but not worth it if you cant get on base more than .300 of the time.
Thats why I wasnt a fan of Juan Pierre, Carl Crawford and other low OBP leadoff men.
The difference with Dee was the promise that he would learn how to take walks being that he is so young.
Still hasnt, but instead he has become a great hitter.
