    Seems like yesterday.
He was 22 with potential..now 26 with potential.
Fella's just a hop and skip away from staring 30 in the eye and it'll be here fast.
    Remember when Kershaw was 25?
Now Kershaw's about to turn 29 in a month.
    Puig better step on it.

Cardinals #1 prospect Alex Reyes(#6 in MLB) may be out for the year. Belief is that he may need TJ. Terrible way to start the year

No you see, if Wood is pitching better than both of them in spring he should be starting. Dodgers are stuck with the contracts either way, and managements responsibility is to put the best team on the field. You don't run a business by not, in this case, putting the best product on the field. McCarthy and Kazmir will have that chance but if they are not one of the 5 best starters or 12 best pitchers or 25 best players then they shouldn't be on this team

Nah, you put McCarthy and Kazmir in early to showcase them.
    Its their last shot.
You showcase them enough to find out which of the two you will trade and which one you will keep.
Then you slot in the young guy in the traded guys place.
And thats if they play well. Which is either way a good thing.
If they suck then your answer becomes easy, bring in the young guys to replace them and eat the contract.
But you dont eat the contracts until you see if you can trade one of the contracts and get some use out of the other.
Guys like Kazmir, McCarthy and Ryu have one bullet in the chamber left. Thye better take their shot and shoot to kill or they will not be at the parade next year.

    i don't disagree at all
you have to put these guys out there and see what [if anything] they've got
unfortunately a bad spring is usually more telling than a good one
a lot of guys -- especially older ones -- can do well in the spring when they're fresh
scott erickson was something like 7-0/1.50 for us in the spring of 2005
5 months later he was dfa'd, 11 months later he was out of baseball
the key stats to focus on for ryu/mehcarthy/kazmir are starts
success from coming into games in the 3rd inning or split squad games against minor league scrubs doesn't mean squat
and even if they do have success against big league hitters, pitchers always have the early advantage
so i can also see where chief is coming from
personally i think wood would be a better choice than any of the three
but it's up to them to show they've still got that one bullet in the chamber
until then, i don't imagine we'll be putting your braun/villar scenarios to bed :stirpot:

    lol
no, that is why you use those two pitchers early when they have the advantage.
make them look good then trade em
lots of pitching desperate teams may look at these two veterans as possible options if they start off strong
brewers could really use a couple of starters ready to go
we can supply them an entire outfield and starting rotation

McCarthy, Kazmir, Brock, Strippling, Toles, Trayce, Verdugo
And we still have too many players.

At the end of the day we want to make the playoffs and have the best possible team on Oct 1. That may or may not include having the best possible team on April 1.

By then we should already have consolidated our team and traded for Villar and Braun by that late a date.
And with Cody Bellinger platooning with A-Gon at 1B vs lefties.

I know MGT has already said they are going with a 5 man rotation, but given Urias's innings limit, Hills Blister, and Maeda's acclimation, and our over abundance of SP, it would seem to make sense that a 6 man rotation would be better for the team.

Guys are good as long as they're good or get hurt. If everyone definitively knew WTF would be the world would be different.

Kemp was the MVP and an "It" guy in all of MLB and now he's the subject of kiddieland jokes on here since Colorado. When Puig came up he was a monster, our "Trout", and now he's another polarizing subject here too... By comparison, what if Harper's year last year wasn't a fluke?

This would would be a good idea if they didn't have the best pitcher in the world. You put Kershaw in a position to get 33 or even 34 starts, utilize off days to skip (or push back) Rich and/or Maeda as needed, Urias probably needs to be spend the first 25-30 games at extended spring, that would be 5 or 6 starts, leaving him to need to be skipped 1 or 2 more times over the last 5 months, if they wanna keep him around ~160 innings (including a couple postseason starts).

MLB NOW is a good show. I don't know why they put painfully unfunny comedians who know nothing about baseball on the panel. Unnecessary.

Could also look no further than this year's 21MM man..one look at LAD's current payroll and that lotto ticket absolutely sticks out.
They gave Crawford any and every chance to come around, all of 2015 and then some, until the day came when it was just time to cut ties.
So yeah, it's a marathon, one that could end the way Kemp's tenure ended, the way Crawford's ended, or the way Puig's nearly ended last August..either way it's pretty obvious that they're OK giving guys a shot at rebuilding value.
McCarthy's now a year removed from TJ, considering the timetable for full recovery, giving him a legitimate chance to come back is reasonable.
And of course Kazmir's shown the ability to bounce back multiple times in his career..if he bounces back this year and pitches like a playoff worthy starter, their chances of matching these 98-100 win projections may be pretty good.
So seeing if Kazmir can put together a more consistent campaign is also fairly reasonable, especially if he's going up against 4's and 5's more often.

    The legend grows.

Dodgers Rumors: Chase Utley Asked To Be Intentionally Hit In Order To Deliver Message To Teammate

    By Matthew Moreno -
    02/15/2017

After trading for Chase Utley in August 2015, the Los Angeles Dodgers went on to re-sign him to a one-year deal that December. Utley had made a minimal impact on the field during the second half of the season, but Los Angeles valued his leadership and intangibles.

Although Utley was expected to fill a utility role off the bench, he wound up serving as the Dodgers’ everyday second baseman and primary leadoff hitter. The veteran fared well early, though eventually couldn’t withstand the rigors of playing on a daily basis.

The Dodgers nonetheless remained interested in re-signing Utley this offseason. Prior to his reported agreeing to a one-year contract, Clayton Kershaw and others were said to have lobbied the front office in support of Utley’s potential return.

No longer the same caliber of player he was for the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this decade, Utley nonetheless is praised for his preparation, focus and relentless style of play.

According to MLB insider Peter Gammons, that entailed asking an opponent to intentionally hit him so that Utley could deliver a message to his teammate:

Coaches tell the story of a game in which the Dodgers had a big lead in the top of the eighth inning when one younger, enthusiastic teammate stole second base, which ticked off the opposition. When Utley got to the plate in the ninth, he told the opposing catcher to have the pitcher drill him. Then his teammate would understand there are consequences for showing up the opposition.

In reviewing Dodgers games from last season with the details mentioned above, there weren’t many results. Even when a stolen base occurred, there was not an instance where Utley was subsequently plunked. He otherwise was hit by a pitch 11 times, which was most on the team.

Of course, a near-hit by pitch last season against the New York Mets is what may resonate with many. Noah Syndergaard buzzed the back of Utley’s jersey with a 99 mph fastball and was ejected. Utley, didn’t show any emotion or reaction, and later hit a solo home run and grand slam to lead the Dodgers to a blowout victory at Citi Field.

The 38-year-old reportedly accepted less money to re-sign with the Dodgers, which Kenley Jansen and Sergio Romo are also said to have done this winter.

    'Tis the stuff of legends...
Could be a movie script. Too bad Costner got fat...nice story line here. Last time I saw him though, he was more like Tommy typecast.
