Folks, need to get off the idea of Stanton, Votto or anyone else with a big contract. This org is simply not going to do it, especially not before the winter of 2018.

Josh Donaldson will be closer to the price the FO wants to pay
And there's the Zaidi/A's connecting between the two, so maybe LAD and Toronto can work out something
Whether its Donaldson taking Adrian's place at 1B or the older JT, with Belli moving to CF or LF full time, it all fits
    Jeter should keep Stanton

Doubt AA and Zaidi wouldn't at least check in on a MVP caliber bat that'd be coming as a potential rental.
Price should be right where they want it.
Belli's athleticism is wasted at 1B and he can throw..he needs to be in the OF helping our play at the plate factor
    He's a natural OF anyway
Go with JT and JD on the corners and Seager/CT up the middle

Also, Votto has a full no trade clause and is staunch in his unwillingness to leave Cincy

Not as good as Darvish, but less likely to get shelled twice in under two innings.

My guess of what the org does this offseason.

    C
    - Grandal is gone(Like has been widely predicted on here). The team will try to get what value they can back for him now as his future with the organization is slim due to the tremendous depth at the position, arguably one of the top C prospects in baseball is only about a year and a half away and he is FA at the end of the season. Barnes and Farmer are suitable pairing next season and I believe Farmer is more capable than what he showed. I would look at teams like the Angels, Mariners, Rockies, Rangers and Orioles as potential targets for Grandal. He is cheap and still regarded as one of the better catchers in baseball so the return should be decent.

    - They could also elect to pull a backup from the scrapheap so that Farmer can start the season getting regular AB's in AAA and Will Smith as well in AA before having to put him on the 40 man.

    1B
    - Bellinger is the 1B, only way he is moved off the position is due to AGon does end up coming back and shows in camp that he is healthy and a worthy option at the position so they are able to move Belli to LF. They will not actively look for a player that moves him off 1B.

    2B
    - Forsythe will have his option picked up. He had a shitty season, but he killed lefties, is cheap, versatile and was about the only good thing going for us in the postseason start to finish. The trick is that he will not be looked at as the starting 2B, I could see the org going the Zobrist route and he spends the spring playing RF, LF, 3B, SS, 2B and 1B. They will look to use him as a super utility player.

    - Taylor should be viewed as the everyday 2B. His range at the position plus his bat to ball skills gives me the feeling of an Ian Kinsler. Let him see what he can do at a position that is considerably harder to fill and is one we are incredibly short at.

    OF
    - Joc Pederson's resurgence in the playoffs was a nice thing to behold, however he is still susceptible to LHPing and is going to be a high K guy. If the team really does think they have fixed him, he will be looked at as the left side of a LF platoon. Not a horrible thing with an org that will have 2 RHH hitters on the bench that kill lefties. I don't think he did enough for the team to move him and still get considerable value in return. I bet they take the same route here that they have with Puig and Kemp before him. Joc will be in camp with the Dodgers as they won't sell low.

    - Andrew Toles will also be in camp trying to push Pederson out of a job and if both look solid throughout camp, the org could move one once the spring is over or use Toles in CF if he can still run the way he did before. He has a huge uphill climb and I expect him to start the year in AAA

    - Alex Verdugo will get a fair shake in CF during camp, but due to the tremendous depth in the org for the OF, I could see them keeping him in AAA to delay his arb and not have a potential 3 consecutive year whammy of Seager, Bellinger and in all likelihood Buehler/Verdugo in terms of free agency. I have seen a lot of negative responses to this kid which is insane to me since he got only 4 fucking starts before being relegated to bench duty. Judging a 21 year old rookie on mostly pinch hit AB's is not the way to go about it. I can only imagine if the org had handled Seager and Bellinger the same way, how they would have looked. He is still is considered one of baseball's top prospects and I expect him to be pretty fucking good. There is a reason why every team wants him in a trade. Which the org is not going to do. Not to mention, he is almost a full year younger than Bellinger is, so he is doing pretty well.

    - Puig is going to be an interesting story to watch this offseason. One part of me says, "yup he has arrived!" the other says, "ok, he has 2 years left before FA, now may be the time to move him and get considerable value in return." I can't help but think the org could pull the shocking move and move Puig this offseason if the right deal comes along. I have no reasoning behind it other than just a hunch.

    UTL
    - The bench next season will likely return Logan Forsythe and Enrique Hernandez. I could see a 4th OF'er coming from within the org, but they could look elsewhere for at least a platoon specialist bat. Maybe Ethier comes back, or they could make a trade. Tough to tell, but they have considerable depth to easily fill the bench within the org.

    SP
    - At least one of McCarthy, Ryu and Kazmir are sent packing. Both Ryu and McCarthy would bring back decent returns, Kazmir may be to just get a little salary relief(and I mean LITTLE). Like I mentioned earlier on this thread, both McCarthy and Ryu are comparable alternatives to Alex Cobb and will come considerably cheaper than his likely $14ish+ mil price tag. This is a good winter to have pitching depth.

    - I think the club makes a run at retaining Darvish and that is about it in FA. His freefall in the WS may have cost him some money, but it is not nearly going to be what we on this board thinks he deserves. In his two years since returning from surgery, he has been good, but not nearly at where he was before. I could see the playoffs costing him a 6th year, but he is probably looking at a 5 year $110-$130 Mil contract from someone that is likely desperate. It will be interesting to see if money reigns supreme or if he really does take a discount to return to the club that helped him love baseball again.

    - If the team makes a big trade, pitching is where it is going to be at. I could see them targeting a young guy that may be down on his luck that they think they can fix(ala Alex Wood), but they don't probably pursue a big name pitcher unless something falls into their laps. Otherwise, I could see them going into next season with a rotation as is and look for Buehler to be a spark down the stretch.

    RP
    - Jansen, Cingrani, Baez, Fields, Dayton, Liberatore, Avilan, Stripling, Font and Paredes are all under team control next season. What that is is a top flight closer, multiple LH specialists and good upside middle relievers to fill out a bullpen. It would be great to see them bring back Morrow, but this bullpen NEEDS another arm that it can pair with Jansen at the back end along with still having a guy like Morrow. Greg Hollands collapse and Morrow's emergence has me worried that he may have propelled himself to the top of the FA reliever food chain. If they could retain Morrow, a guy like Jake McGee could be solid pairing in the late innings.

Besides all that, the club is not going to make a deal that moves any of the left side of the IF around. It is nice to dream, but that is not how this FO works. They can use pieces within the org and makeup arguably the best IF in baseball already. If they have to add a starter from outside the org, it is going to be in the OF where it is considerably cheaper to obtain talent. I think where we see all the moving parts is Grandal going away, maybe a starting pitcher or two and they try to fortify a bullpen that was heavily used.

I'm not advocating Grandal over Barnes, I'm advocating Grandal over Farmer. We need two good catchers not 1, and is Farmer even that? I don't even think they let him catch 1 game this year in the time he was up. It makes plenty of sense for them to split time. You don't know how Barnes will hold up catching a full season, he's never done it before

Nope. Justin Turner is an excellent defensive third baseman and Cody Bellinger is a budding elite defensive first baseman

Farmer has the tools to be an above average backup catcher. Granted he would be replacing an above average starting catcher for the position, but one who is entering a contract year and would likely be gone after the season. Might be worth seeing what they can get for him. Last year was a breakout year for Farmer who... get this.... spent the offseason remaking his mechanics at the plate. He very well could be a comparable player to Barnes, but one with a better arm behind the dish.

Yeah, but he wouldn't wait until then to sign just in case that is what you are implying.

If Barnes is the starter and handling both LHP and RHP offensively ( which he did), that means you're advocating Grandal for a backup role and Grandal is too good for that. It literally makes no sense to not trade him and bring in a more suitable backup. Of all the things people are speculating about not being likely, this is #1. Also, making Grandal your backup in his free agent walk year is asking for clubhouse trouble..would piss off some of the guys he calls friends in there as well.

Bellinger is going to play plus defense wherever he is. I remember a time earlier in the season when people were speculating that Chris Taylor could be a worse defensive outfielder than Ryan Braun. I also remember a time when LAD was angling to hand shortstop over to Andrelton Simmons. We'd like to think things are cement solid..they aren't. They put a ton of focus on versatility to put it to action. Right opportunity arises and we could also be looking for a new RF.

That's fine, but they aren't paying Grandal $7M+ (his arb projection) to split time, and whose to say Farmer is gifted the job? Plenty of solid veterans available, won't hit a ton, but will manage the staff when needed and won't cost a fortune.

Turner has had knee and ankle issues continually.
He has morphed his body into that of a slugger.
Both of these will continue to sap his defense at 3B.
Bellinger is good at 1B nut not gold glove good.
Even at this age Adrian is still better defensively.
Bellinger needs to work on his feet around the bag.

Bregman, Altuve, Correa, Gurriel = one IF I can think of that is better than ours.
