Why does it feel like Kazmir has been on the 162 game DL?

    Good place for him.

Does a lot less harm to the team.

The Giants have exercised their options on Madison Bumgarner, Matt Moore and Pablo Sandoval. Their projected opening day payroll at this point is $187M and the salary Tax starts at 197. If they want to compete next year, it looks like they will have to dip into that number fairly deep. Hunter Pence is their only guaranteed FA after next season. Span and Moore have options.

Of course. The nerds are doing their usual job.
    They are the frontrunners.
Everyone knows this. Stanton wants to be a Dodger and the Marlins want our prospects and young pitchers.
So the Dodgers will wait it out. Let all the other suitors butter the Marlins up with sweet nothings.
At the last moment the Dodgers will whip it out and that will be that.
The not so Giants and the little Cubbies will go back in their closet/cave and leave things to us.
They wont be able to match up.
At this point being 'in it' is simply betting against yourself if you are the nerds.

They can have almost the same thing for less $$$ and no prospects if they just sign JD Martinez.

Sends a serious FU message for next year too, thats for sure.

We have the highest payroll in baseball, and our offense is pretty stout with more studs on the way in our system. Stanton is an awesome player, but I don't think the FO wants to add another massive contract for a bat when we need to think about possibly re-signing Yu or getting Otani and getting even better in our BP.

Also with the success of Belli and Seager and Puig and Joc and Taylor and Barnes and even Culberson....I really think the FO believes in their ability to get young talent or identify lesser known talent and bring them up.

It's not as sexy as a Stanton or Machado or Harper when they become available, but it's cost effective and you can't objectively question the results. We were one game and 5 RISP away from the while enchilada....even closer if you count the pitching meltdowns in Game 2 and 5.

The team that won it all essentially got there doing the same thing....with Verlander being the one guy pushing them over the top, and even he didn't win both his WS starts.

    kurnick gets it...
    • "Fans will clamor to bypass a thin free-agent outfielder market and trade for Giancarlo Stanton, concerned not in the least with the $295 million owed to him through age 38, his opt-out after 2020 or the package of talent the Marlins will extract in return. All of that runs counter to everything this management team has done in three years."

I am not sure if this is real or not, but I was reminded of it this morning when running an errand this morning. One of the hosts on MLB Radio yesterday said that teams are beginning to get wary of working with the Dodgers FO. It is not that teams don't like dealing with them, according to the GM this guy talked to it's that when they call about a random player, red flags now go up. His team no longer goes, "oh yeah, we are happy to move him!" it's basically "Why do they want him? Scout team, assemble!" So when the Dodgers call about a player, teams are going back over tape on the guy to see if they are missing something. I really hope if this is true, the FO starts randomly calling teams to get thier FO to put in extra work.

Friedman and Zaidi having a press conference, some bits from it:

    - Rick Honeycutt is expected back in 2018 as is the rest of the coaching staff.
    - Seager may not need surgery, they're monitoring the situation
    - Maeda is still considered a piece of the rotation
    - They did not rule out pursuing re-signing Yu Darvish
    - They couldn't really discuss it since he's technically not available, but Otani would make for an interesting situation
    - They feel Dave Roberts will be a coach for a long time, but did not say whether or not if they are considering a contract extension.
    - Yimi Garcia is expected in the mix for the bullpen.
    - It is too early to say what holes they feel will need addressing
    - Also too early to tell whether the club will look to reduce payroll or add to it
    - Toles is expected to be ready for ST
    - They are hoping to have the issue of too many starting pitchers again when camp breaks.

No thanks. I think there is enough OF depth in the system that he is not worth pursuing. Feel like he'll get 2 years too many on his contract and we will wish we had that money for something else.

    Don't mind if I do.
Although, they won't..they'll gamble on Verdugo finally being ready to finish a long season strong for once.
