    • The Major League Baseball Players Association projects at least 12 of baseball’s 32 teams will start 2019 with a “substantially lower payroll” than 2018. Only four or five are expected to show a significant increase. “Players are well past ‘concerned,’” Bruce Meyer, the union’s director of collective bargaining, told Michael Powell of the New York Times. “At a time when industry revenues and club valuations are growing for the second straight off-season, an alarming number of clubs are declining to compete for the many talented players.”

    The NBA cap is directly correlated to revenue. Gonna have to do something similar in the MLB next CBA negotiations and contracts are gonna shoot up. Either that or pay minor leaguers and first 6 year guys way more

    Along with a major overhaul to the financial structure of the game, players (especially those who will hit FA at 28+) might need to consider signing long-term deals while in Arb years. Take Mookie Betts for example, going into his age-26 season signed a 1-year $20M deal avoiding arb, instead players could do a deal where they get $20M & $25M in the two remaining arb years, and they buy say 5 years of free agency at ~$35M, making it 7 years $220M, can stretch to a 10 year deal if you want, but you get the idea. The point is players (especially elite ones) need to get their payday ASAP.

    Agreed. Why not make it so that arb isn’t just a direct reflection of your worth? Instead of a build up where a guy rarely gets more than $10 million the first year, why not if Mookie Betts hits arbitration after winning MVP he can get that $25 million the first year, and if he sucks the following year then it goes down, but if he’s even better it can go up?
