The idea of Kemp suiting up as a Padre feels weird.

That said, we save a lot of money from this deal and get Grandal who is under team control for 4 more years. Also, something is fishy about the Rollins deal not being complete... We got Kendrick, so I assume the Utley rumors are over, that leaves Hamels.

Gonna miss Kemp big time man. This really isn't a bad trade from a business perspective, but I'd be pissed if they don't do anything after clearing $ on the Kemp deal. Hamels would be sweet, obviously, but idk if I want to just hand the job to Joc/Heisey platoon come April.

    I don't like this deal.

Kemp was our best hitter. Yes, we don't have to pay 70-80mm on his contract, but Grandal is a meh hitting catcher. Hardly a good centerpiece of a deal. Yes, he's good at framing and better than Ellis, but that's not good enough. The two pitchers we got also sound remarkably lackluster. How was this worth it at all? Will the Phillies actually be enticed by a package including either (or both) of those pitchers for Hamels? Will another team be enticed?

Sure Joc in center and Puig in right improves our defense drastically, but I don't really have much faith in Joc at the moment. Will one of Ethier or CC be packaged in a deal as well? We still have a logjam in the OF.

Grandal's 2014 average fly ball distance was higher than Kemp's 2014 average fly ball difference.

My Padre friend just texted back with: "It's a great deal for you guys. Kemp isn't that good. You guys needed to get rid of an outfielder anyways. Hopefully his huge second half wasn't a mirage but I kind of doubt it."

Obviously this means, (a) we're homers and Kemp really isn't valued that highly by other fans OR (b) my friend doesn't know shit.

He went on to say "Kemp couldn't play center and is barely competent in a corner so it's all about hitting and he hasn't been very good at that recently except for the second half last year. I am happy Dodgers fans are upset though haha. But I'm worried the Padres just went for a big name to get the fans excited and took too big a risk."

I really hate the Kemp trade... I see no reason for it... Grandal is nothing special, and unless they turn those newly acquired prospects into Hamels, I think its a bad move... Lets hope Joc turns out to be as good as advertised, cuz if he's not, then we are in deep shit...

I have a gut feeling that the Guggs are still looking to trade Ethier and clear up a little more payroll. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part?

If our 2015 season hopes hinged on Matt Kemp, we were in deep shit to begin with.

I'm not sure. But he did forget how to play CF and still can't hit a slider.

Gonna wait to see the end game on this trade

Starting to feel it's about ownership. It took a lot of money to add McCarthy, kendrick and possibly Rollins so they might have needed to clear room and this was the best way to do it

I'm gonna miss Kemp so much. I think Kemp is a bit worse then we think and that Grandal is better then we imagine but it still doesn't mean Grandal will hit as well as him.

We got stronger at C today and honestly OF is a place we just had too much depth in. CC sucks too much to get anything for, Andre people barely want any more.

This was the way to do it, and sadly it looks like this was the best that could be offered. On the purest unbiased baseball sense it seems logical, but gotta wait for final word on all players. But on a quick reaction it just looks hard to see him go

Rollins, kendrick, Puig, adrian, Grandal, CC/SVS, uribe and Pederson is a damn good lineup

It's missing the superstar in Kemp/Hanley but doesn't have the glaring hole in one or two spots

And the defense is MUCH improved

No Dee, no Kemp...and it's just a foregone conclusion to almost everyone it seems, that we got to the playoffs last year with these guys. And lost because the best pitcher in BB had a melt down, and there was not a competent RP to go to. Or an SP perhaps.
So we trade our second baseman who was really exciting and a spark plug on so many wins and get a guy on the tail end of his career, (he's not an upgrade over the best base steeler in the game and young as Dee is in the lineup ), and the OF who got us into the post in the first place. Or as responsible as anyone else. We'll see how this O plays out.
It's odd how it's youth, youth, youth to some...but OK to get rid one of the best young emerging stars in the game. ML leader.
I know someone who was right, it was my FL friend who told me that NerdCo would do exactly what they are doing; "it's all about money with these guys and that's the bottom line". If something good happens, then it's a beneficial collateral to the payroll cuts.
IMO, the Padres and the Marlins win on both of these for their fans...and we save money (?); that is our victory. And good for people who act like they are spending their personal allowances.
One of the richest teams in BB; how much do we need to save?

Yeah I mean there's a real real chance he struggles when first comes up and strikes out a lot in 2015, but he has legit power and good defense at worst case scenario but hopefully he doesn't strike out too much and puts together an okay year
