Can we please move the Vinny posts to a dedicated thread?

Yeah, I got suspicious when Koufax was randomly name dropping him during his statue unveiling and Vin was nowhere to be found. Then the all star game happened and not a peep from him either. I made a post in the off topic thread on July 19th, and now here we are. From the sound of it, some illness came quick and took him fast.

Dodger postgame on television was a tribute to Vin. Nicely moderated by John Hartung. Interviews with Al Michaels, Charlie Steiner, Ross Porter, Rick Monday, Steve Garvey, Orel and Nomar, among others.

All emphasized how unfailingly polite Vin was to everyone. He was the gold standard for broadcasters and men. Orel mentioned how the current broadcasters all wear ties in the booth as a tribute to Vin.

Thoroughly professional. As Garvey said, listening to a game you couldn't tell which team with which Vin was affiliated. That seemed to rub a lot of younger listeners the wrong way in later years. Apparently they prefer homers. Fuck them. Give me Vin.

My Mom's mother was a Croatian immigrant who lived in San Pedro. She (like me) learned about baseball from Vin and grew to love it on the radio. On one visit we walked in and she had the game on the radio. She gestured toward the radio and said in her broken English "he's my friend." He was mine, too even though I never met him.

remember as a young kid going to my first Dodgers game and everyone still had radios in the stands
i had been listening to Chick and Vin on my little red 9v transistor radio that was my best friend back then but now i was AT the game
my dad told me it was because of the man calling the games and from high up reserve seats he tried to show me where was
always looked for him every game after that because his voice echoed everywhere like a God
i know some of you remember how that was

Ron Cey talked about that... how the players could hear Vin's play-by-play on the field from all the radios in the stands.

This is Vinny's call on the Ferguson catch/throw, with the comments by Cey following it. https://www.mlb.com/video/vin-scully-top-20-11-ferguson-c1131933383

I started following the Dodgers in the mid/late-70s. I had a paper route, delivering the morning SF Chronicle. I’d be up before the crack of dawn – basically waking when I heard the truck stop in front of our house and drop the stack on the driveway with a loud thud. My ritual each morning, before folding and strapping the newspapers, would be to take out a Sporting Green (remember when they were actually green?), read the Dodger recap from the previous day, study the box score, and check to see if they had a game scheduled that evening. If so, I would look forward to it all day. Of course, there was no internet, and living in the Bay Area, I didn’t have the same access to the radio feed that those of you in SoCal did. However, there was this weird phenomenon – I can’t explain it, maybe someone else here knows the science behind it – but there was a station in Las Vegas broadcasting the Dodger feed, and the later we got into each night, the clearer the signal would become to me. It would start at around 8:15 or so, very fuzzy and buried in static. I would hold the transistor to my ear and strain to hear that so familiar voice, slowly thumbing the tuning dial up and down, trying to find the precise frequency. Was that Vinny? It was so difficult to tell at first… so feint among the background noise. I’d long to hear him, dying to know what was happening in the game. Then it was a little louder, the signal even pulsating a bit. Yes, there he was – the golden voice! (Or sometimes it was a Farmer John ad). I still couldn’t quite make out what he was saying. Are the Dodgers winning? Hang in there, it will get clearer. And eventually it did. And finally I was able to hear Vinny’s call on the remaining few innings. I’d go to bed with the radio under my pillow, glued to every word. The way he described everything in detail, the visual pictures he painted in my mind, the anecdotes he shared… I swear I felt I was sitting right next to him in the booth watching the game.

Now in my 50’s, much that represented my youth is long gone. Vinny, however, continued to take me back – all through my 20s, 30s, and 40s. Each time I heard that familiar tone of voice, I’d feel like a kid again.

Yesterday, when I learned he had left us, I immediately felt a part of me went with him, gone forever.

I got two calls today from friens...not Dodger fans...who offered their condolences to me as a Dodger fan on Vinny's passing.
    Heartwarming.

"Hey Fredo," Frank says, "What's with the food around here?"

"A kid comes up to me in a white jacket, gives me a Ritz cracker, and uh, chopped liver, he says canapés I say uh, uh, can o' peas my ass, that's a Ritz cracker and chopped liver! . . . Bring out the peppers and sausage."

Okay, so last night and today I've read a number of lists ranking Vin's top ten calls, and this one never seems to make it. For me though, it's special because I was driving south on Hwy 5 literally past Dodger Stadium on a family vacation to Disneyland when it happened. The wife and kids were all asleep, that is until my hollering woke them.

Notice Vinny's signature "stop talking and let the crowd tell the story".
