    from espn...

NEW YORK -- It had to happen sooner or later, but still, the news that 2014 will be the last season for Derek Jeter -- announced on his Facebook page about 2 p.m. Wednesday -- feels like a cataclysmic event for the Yankees. Next spring, for the first time since George Bush the Elder was president, Derek Jeter -- the captain of the Yankees for the past 12 years and both the undisputed face of the franchise and the game he plays -- will not be a part of the New York Yankees. And that feels, well, huge. And strange.

Facing the music: Jeter broke the news on his Facebook page in a lengthy message which he started out by thanking Yankees fans and equated his storybook career to "a dream [from which] you eventually wake up." You can read the entire post here.

No doubt: To those wondering if Jeter's decision will stick should he, say, hit .300 this season, comes this quote: "I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."

Core no more: Jeter's retirement means there will not be a single member remaining of the Core Four, with the retirement two years ago of Jorge Posada and the retirements before this season of Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte. It is hard to imagine that a quartet of players of that magnitude will ever play nearly all of their careers for one franchise ever again (Jeter, Rivera and Posada played every minute of their careers for the Yankees. Pettitte, of course, took a brief detour to Houston).

Why, Captain, why?: We'll know better when Jeter speaks to the media in Tampa probably this week, but he alluded to his difficult, injury-plagued 2013 season. "The one thing I always said to myself was, when baseball started to feel more like a job, it would be time to move forward," he wrote in his message.

Cooperstown-bound: You bet, although you can rest assured that someone, somewhere within the ranks of the BBWAA will not vote for him the first time around. Can't wait to see who that is, and what the reasons are.
Monument Park, here he comes: No doubt, Jeter's No. 2 will join the host of others on the wall beyond the center-field fence. The only question is, how long before the Yankees officially retire it? I would set the over/under at Opening Day 2015.

Ironic or heartbreaking?: Assuming the Yankees don't dump Alex Rodriguez' contract before next year, this pretty much assures that A-Rod will be a Yankee after Jeter is gone.

Get your tickets now: Not to be callous, but the Yankees' marketing staff could not have asked for a better boost for season-ticket sales this season. The Mariano Rivera farewell tour couldn't prevent the Yankees from suffering another drop in attendance in 2013 -- possibly because you could never be sure when Mo would get into a game -- but you can bet Jeter's final season will have the house close to jam-packed every night this season.

(RHETORICAL) QUESTION: Can you even imagine the New York Yankees without Derek Jeter?

yeh, so let's uhhhh lock up Hanley now, please. we don't need to get into a bidding war with NY for Hanley's services next offseason.

...and yeh, Hanley did just gain some leverage against LAD. pay him.

    All respect.

But I think the "into the stands!" catch is the most overrated play ever. The catch was whatever...maybe I need an aerial view to see how much ground he covered....but from the clips shown it looks like a standard running catch, 3 steps and a dive into the stands. Good play but the stands being there really catapulted a meh play.

Again though, idk how much ground he covered to get to the ball ..

Not sure why he went to Philly, his time is running out, Philly not the place to get the rings, guess money is more important.

I wouldn't call Jeter the last of a dying breed - really the breed of "star players who play their whole career on one team" died out with free agency a long time ago. We've actually seen a small epidemic of these players in the past couple years: Chipper, Rivera, Helton, and now Jeter; and I think we will see these types of players sprinkled within baseball forever. Maybe the next player will be Kershaw? Money certainly doesn't hurt. Afterall, Jeter has the second highest career earnings of anyone in MLB history, and my guess is this story is quite different had the Astros drafted him (which they almost did).

While I'm not going to hate on the guy, I'm also going to refrain from joining the Jeter circle-jerk that is starting to break out (I reserve that for my Boys in Blue). I don't think Jeter is overrated, but I do think Jeter is over-exposed. And it's times like these that I'm glad I don't watch a lot of ESPN.

Last of a dying breed, blah, blah, blah... He's a fucking Yankee and I hope him retiring sinks that franchise and they remain in the cellar for years to come.

    Fuck the Yankees...

    yeah that... LOL

Best Jeter play I saw years ago was an outfield relay from deep center, Jeter jumps, catches the ball turns and throws a strike to the plate before landing back on the ground.

Dunno how many times he'd practiced it but that was one sweet play.

    for a damned Yankee...

you know damned well that the Yankees are going to do this...

    The Rivera farewell tour
    The Jeter farewell tour
    The A-Roid farewell tour
    The Yankees dignity farewell tour

Can't wait to run them through the new Dodger grinder...

never understood all the yankee hate
yeah they overspent to buy the best team they could
    so what?
aren't we now following a similar plan?
i'll admit, i despised them in the late 70's/early 80's
why, because they broke my heart in '77 and '78
hell, i have a lot more hatred for any/every team in the nl west than the yankees

I'd wager that I'm like at least 50% of the Yankee haters
I know they purchased every piece of talent every time,
    every year talent was available
    clean or cheating juicer
and then they won the ring
    and won again
    and again
    and again
    and again...

way more times than I care to list

So since I've NEVER lived in NY
and I've watched them purchase one Ring after another
    for years
I have every right to hate the Yankees
and I intend to do so
    ad nauseum

    ... and per your point
and in defense of the many Yankee fans
    fair weather or otherwise
    IF
    and ONLY IF
GG can spend WHATEVER is required and they DO manage
to acquire the talent to turn the Dodgers
    into Yankees West
    And then...
    and then WE WIN
    and Win
    and Win

then it will be OK with me for the rest of the league
    to hate us too

    until then?
until we have MORE RINGS than they do
    then...

    Fuck the damned Yankees!

The only reason I can see Dodger fans hating the Yankees is because they've kicked our asses so much over the years. The Dodgers would probably have 10+ WS titles if it weren't for the Yankees.

I hate the Yankees because they aren't the Dodgers. Simple as that.
