Love it. The one 1 year opt-out is a no-lose proposition, if he has a year like 2015 (but hopefully a little more consistent), he goes back on the market next winter. At the same time, the Dodgers, should have some young guys available to fill that spot (Maybe JDL?) in 2017. If he gets hurt or struggles, they have him back for 17 & 18.
I like the signing. He's posted solid numbers in the AL all his career and should be even better in the NL. It is really weird to have a rotation full of lefty starters though. I expect us to acquire a RHP like Odorizzi and maybe flip Alex Wood.
I love this deal. A steal at 3 years $48 million, in my opinion. The lefty dominant rotation is a little strange, but not the end of the world.
Additional details of the deal... 2:58pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that Kazmir’s $48MM will be deferred and paid out over a six-year term. Kazmir will receive a $5MM signing bonus and a $3MM salary in 2016, and he’ll earn $8MM for the next five years, barring an opt-out. Presumably, then, if he opts out, he’ll receive a total of $8MM this season and $8MM from the Dodgers next season. 2:25pm: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times reports that Kazmir’s deal is for three years and $48MM total (Twitter link). Jon Heyman of CBS Sports adds a very interesting wrinkle, however, reporting that Kazmir receives an opt-out in his contract after the first year of the deal, allowing him to re-enter the market in a pitching-depleted 2016-17 free-agent class if he remains healthy this year (Twitter link).
Solid. They're still up in the air in a Game 2/postseason situation even if they add Maeda, but solid signings. Not that having an ace going in Game 2 guarantees a championship, just sayin.
Wow, that deal is fucking great. I love the one year opt out as that will benefit both himself and the team with McCarthy coming back and both JDL and Urias coming.
Kazmir’s contract includes deferred salaries, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post: Joel Sherman ✔ @Joelsherman1 #Dodgers deferring Kazmir 3-$48M over 6 yrs so getting $8M annually in that period including $5M sign bonus and $3M salary this year 12:55 PM - 30 Dec 2015
Kazmir has reverse splits so although it's left heavy, it's not like they're gonna suck against righties Kershaw doesn't care what hand you bat with, and Ryu's change up makes him effective against righties. Anderson/Wood probably have splits But I said this earlier, most of the second tier depth is right handed so although it'll get talked about a lot it's not that crazy ( Z Lee, McCarthy, De Leon, Cotton, Frias, Bolsinger, Wieland)
I like the signing The structure carries a good amount of risk though. For now, I'm happy the Dodgers have him for next year
i've been very critical of the front office so far for not signing one of the marquee fa starters but if we were to succeed with kazmir and a maeda/orozzi it would be a huge fuck you to the giants, d'bags etc and i will gladly admit i was was wrong
I'm cool with the Kazmir signing, he's pretty decent with some upside, pretty reasonable contract too for the team and for the player with the opt out clause after the 1 year in there. If he has a good one season and leaves that's fine with me as he bridged a gap for the younger pitchers and we get a pick out of it, if he has a meh season and stay that's fine too cause a 3 year contract isn't a killer and Kazmir at worst is back end worthy probably. So now about the whole five lefties thing... I have a feeling this is still going to be addressed, while I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, I think it's going to change. And with Kazmir possibly only providing one season and next year's pitching market thin, they'll still be in on a Maeda or trade for a controlled arm. Fine signing though, IMO. Let's see what happens next... this is a chain reaction front office.
