I just hope the weird contract structure isn't because he has a sketchy elbow MRI or something please be healthy

I'm not worried about his physical at all. I'm sure the contract is unusual because he wants to prove his worth. Not something that is rare in Japan. It's a cultural thing.

He's got 1500 innings on his arm, I'm sure there's something there.
But they agreed that he has the potential to be a rock solid #3 arm when they put those incentives in there, so it seems as if they know it can swing either way here.
At the very least it seems they feel he can be Saito or Uehara, a quality reliever with pitchability

Joel Sherman mentioned on "Hot Stove" this morning that the deal could involve multiple opt-outs. I'll watch the re-run and see how exactly it is phrased.

The good news is it has to be official by friday.

Did you like the Reynolds and Vasgurgen (whatever) take on this team? Still insisting there is no plan even after Sherman laid it out for them. The only useful thing said on the air today was that they expect things to get busy this week.

I couldn't disagree with them more, to be honest. They are building with depth, and probably have the best Top 8 starter candidates, when Ryu/Wood, Bolsinger and Frias don't have spots, that's a good problem.

More often than not recently, teams have gotten there (to the LCS and beyond) with rotation depth, not 2 aces, what did the Royals have? Yes, an awesome bullpen, but FanGraphs loves what the Dodgers have coming back. The Giants? MadBum and nothing. The Cardinals? Wainwright and young guys. The Mets were the only exception of multiple awesome starters, but they were all pre-arb, see if they can afford it in 2017 and beyond.

^.. All true but two bonafide aces is still a sweet thing....

And while Kazmir was more solid recently than earlier I'm apparently the only one that isn't so impressed... if he's as good as we got for losing Greinke... well then .. the jury remains out

Maeda could be a nice addition IF he is one of the Asian pitchers that can prosper in the MLB. Time will tell.

So far our 2 has fallen but 3-5 has improved and you can't have a good enough bullpen... so lets keep this thing rolling

I'm not speaking for everybody, but the reasons I was so excited about Kazmir compared to pretty much any other FA below the Greinke/Price are....

    1) No draft pick.
    2) Only a 3 year deal, as opposed to 5 for a guy like Leake.
    3) Despite the "injury-prone" tag, he's made 92 starts over the last 3 years.
    4) He has never pitched in the NL, and virtually everyone pitches better in this league, not to mention getting him out of Minute Maid Park (he pitched pretty well in O.co)

Does he replace Greinke? No. But between he and Maeda, they can get 350 quality innings for less than Greinke's $34M AAV.

Brad Lidge and whoever the host is with the high pitched voice on MLB Radio said the same thing yesterday. The Dodgers have no plan, their pitching staff is easily far behind the Giants and the D'Backs who have supremely better offenses. Said that the Dodgers still need to add another big name pitcher before they think the team is not in rebuild mode...
    Kershaw>Greinke>Bumgarner
    Cueto>Kazmir>Miller
    Corbin>Ryu(unless back to old self)>Shitmargia
    B Anderson>Cain>Rubby Del La Rosa
    Maeda>Peavy>Wood>A Bradley

The Dodgers have the better player head to head at 3 of the match ups and it could look even more different if Maeda is more of the 3 I've been seeing in projections and even more so if Ryu is healthy. Acting like the Dodgers have all the question marks of the 3 is stupid. The Dodgers probably have more question marks thanks to having more guys to choose from. The Giants have 3 question marks in their rotation, the Diamonbacks have 4(yes, I'm counting Greinke in this because are they banking on him being the 9 WAR player he was last year, or the 3-4.5 WAR player he had been up to that point?)
Also, yeah it may not be the best pen, but of those three teams, the Dodgers probably have the best bullpen as currently constructed. I would love to see the team add another big piece to bolster the front of the rotation and find a way to for their own three headed monster at the back end, but pronouncing on TV and radio that the team doesn't have a plan and seems lost is so fucking misguided.

...and then again which pronouncements on TV are NOT "fucking misguided"??

    comes with the territory

Source says #Dodgers-Kenta Maeda deal is taking a while because of concerns over his elbow. Expected to be official in next day or 2.
    ----------------------
Explains the style of deal, the low guarantee and high incentives, still a very minimal loss situation for the Dodgers.

Must be long-term concerns, he has made at least 26 starts every year since 2009, keep in mind the season is only 143 games.

    • The contract is taking awhile to finalize due to concerns over Maeda’s elbow, reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter). However, whatever issues exist don’t appear to be dire in nature, as Crasnick adds that the deal should still become official within the next 48 hours or so. If there are indeed medical concerns pertaining to Maeda’s elbow, that could serve as an explanation for the unique and extremely incentive-laden nature of Maeda’s deal with Los Angeles.
i'm gonna focus on the bolded part

Well, that does suck but would explain the low cost. Hopefully nothing bad happens but I'm now expecting a Tommy John surgery to occur within the next couple of years

It's not unreasonable to think Cueto would be the Giants ace, at least in the regular season, his #'s have been better than Bumfuck's
