the game evolves and changes over the years
lots of people outside of LA hated magic for his always crying foul and manipulating the refs and the lakers
he was the lebron of his time with all that stuff you hate now, we just in a different era where you dont feel the vibe

i think that is weird
then again i just watch the game recaps on youtube

luka is in the same magic/lebron build of bitching to the refs and not always playing defense and being oversized pass first guys

i used to be a guy who would drive into the paint and always go up and into the defense to try to get tough layups
but then the achilles went bad and i had to rely more on my midrange game and floaters and all kinds of janky shit
then my back started to fuck up and really couldnt risk going anywhere near the paint even on floaters and shit so i had to finally push myself to becoming a decent outside shooter
once i started keeping the ball up high and initiating my shot faster it was easier to surprise people with long jumpers
before that i was always obsessed with shooting with the right form
all that got me was to be super streaky with my shot going to shit if there was something off with my form for whatever reason

my point is the nba is aging too
but maybe luka is its phoenix and the league changes to something more palatable to the demographic that buys expensive seats and expensive drinks
and why adam silver sent him to the lakers
not for basketball reasons but for nba league revenue reasons
because the nba needs los angeles to have a superstar
everyone knows lebron is kareem abdul jablunt at this stage
now hopefully they got some of kobes german adrenachrome left over for lukas chronically bad achilles
luka has lower calf stiffness down to his heel the same way as i have since i hit puberty
seems we got dipped in the same river of genes

im not comparing him, he is what he is
he comes into the lane and cries for fouls and begs to be let out of bad plays by the refs

and i loved magic and am not a lebron fan at all

the league is set up to make lebron look good, the refs help him and he is the showpiece of the league

the rim is too low and the players are too big strong and fast
they cant play physical because they will hurt each other

shit im trying to learn how websites are hosted now and its a whole different animal than it was 10 years ago
the new way seems wrong and an extra layer of stuff in the way that is less secure than the old fashioned LAMP but it has all the version control you would ever want to ensure you never truly fuck anything up
but my old ass dont like it

so going to the new systems makes sense
where every little change is backed up on the cloud in an interminable amount of save points and easy to use migration tools that allow you to upgrade the site seamlessly without having to ever touch the live code on the server and accidentally messing it up.

I can't deny that emotions play a big part of my fandom, trivial or not. I mean, really, why watch the games if you're not going to get emotional? But I know, you're referring to the off-court, off-field stuff. Sure, I try to ignore that noise and sometimes I can, other times I can't. But for the most part, it's not the "I'm taking my talents to South Beach," "Ain't no party like a diddy party," lack-of-loyalty ring-chasing stuff that makes me dislike him. It's things I witnessed during games years ago before I stopped watching. Not wanting to take the big shot with the game on the line. His flopping to the floor with arms flailing when getting bumped by a dude half his weight. And other stuff. By the way, I saw Bosh flop and Garnett and others, so it wasn't just a Lebron thing, which is part of why I hate the NBA now. Karl Malone, whom I wasn't a fan of but is an easy comparison to Lebron due to physique, never flopped - at least not that I ever saw. Kobe, who definitely did not have a similar physique may have complained a lot to refs when he didn't get calls, but he wasn't a flopper either. I have no idea if this is still commonplace in the NBA, but it definitely played a role in turning me away.

I don't accept that James is a better father than Kobe. Kobe made the one big mistake - adultery, not rape - but otherwise seemed like a loving dad and he was raising those girls right. It's still hard for me to accept that Gianna died, and I would've loved to see how far her basketball skills would have taken her with her dad as her biggest fan. In a smaller way, despite Kobe already being retired, that helicopter crash played a role in me turning away from the NBA.

Canseco (and Bonds and Sosa and McGuire et al) doing roids can't be chalked up as personal life... not when it impacted the game as it did. And Pete Rose's transgression was not personal life.

 

I don't know if it's just me, but becoming a fan of the Dodgers, Lakers, and Rams when I was just a wee lad, idolizing the players, treasuring the rare occasions that I could watch them in person or on TV... those unis still stir something in me. That would definitely not be the case if I became a fan as an adult, but there's something that carries over from childhood that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Seeing the original unis still does that for me, but I don't get the same feeling when they're wearing some offshoot colors or designs.

its too much color everywhere

i grew up in the generation in between the one you are talking about so i found the change in uniform styles exciting
and change was happening faster and more often than in your age
but then i got old and all the new changes came on too fast it it all got silly to me
i stopped watching religiously and became a casual fan
and thats where i am now
i kinda like it

we tend to not focus on the negatives because we love kobe
but others who are not laker fans or kobe fans would paint a grim picture of him
shit i remember people on this site hating him deeply for fucking up the relationship with Shaq
most of the older people hated Kobe and loved Shaq and took his side
but most people still here eventually got over their love for Shaq and become Kobe lovers
and thats how it is because imo its not about the uniform or the players or the owners or the building they play in
its about the connection the organization has with the fans and the fans with the organization
that transcends whatever it was that made you fall in love with it as a child when that first love begins to wane
