Sellers WAR is pretty fluky considering fangraphs has his UZR/150 at an outrageous 28.2 at SS and 31.9 at 3B; For comparisons sake, Alexei Ramirez, pretty much the best defensive SS in the MLB in a full year last year, had a UZR/150 of 11.4 last year at SS

Guys, there is a definite reason why Mark Ellis has had a starting job in the majors for almost a decade and why people aren't lining up to keep or trade for Justin Sellers

I think James' projection for Sellers average is a little on the generous side. He really has little idea what he's doing up there. He's got a natural uppercut in his swing despite the fact that he's short and weak, he pops way too many balls up. He's very far away from being anything near respectable at the plate.

And yeah, he made some fabulous plays but Ellis is still clearly a better option than him.

Ellis is better than Sellers. Oh wait, that's not saying much. Ellis sucks. Plain and simple. Can't hit worth a shit and is getting paid close to 9 mil to do so. Sellers can hit like shit as well and play perfectly fine D for the minimum. Why a cash strapped team throws dollars at guys like Ellis leaves me in disbelief.

I'm not saying he's deserving, or not deserving for that matter, but I have a really weird feeling that Stephen Fife is going to be our #5 starter

This thread has been hijacked by sabrmetrics.

Ellis sucks, there I saved you the WAR/UZR/LMNOP/QRSTUV debate don't need ridiculous stats to see that.

He is not worth what we paid for him, period.

It doesn't take a mathematician to prove that Sellers and Ellis are both hacks.

see but he is worth what we paid for him because of his defense. VRP and others proved it with statistics. What should I go with? Stats or your opinion?

It's fun to make fun of Sabermetrics when you don't understand them I suppose.

Instead of saying "I don't buy into WAR because..." it's more fun to say "WAR sucks sabermetrics blows, you guys are stupid"

It's funny because I'm pretty sure the majority of the Ellis haters have seen him play only a handful of times as well. So they're not using stats, not using the eye test, just deciding he sucks because they feel like it.

Use metrics to prove to me the differences between two players of similar caliber...fine.

Using metrics to make Mark Ellis look good....probably going to go through one ear and out the other.

when I first heard about the signing I was a little worried it was too much (because I really havent seen him play) and then I saw his D was ++ and he played really well in 2010. So now I basically like it lol

The Ellis contract makes him the 2Bman - that's a given. If Ned gets Hairston (yesterday's rumor on MLBTR) - then Mitchell, Sellers and the junior Jesus go back to the farm, and probably get DFA'ed at some point. (If they play well - they will go to the Pirates). Hairston could put some pressure on Uribe and Ellis to play reasonable ball - so, either one could be destined to Ned's gold plated bench. All Hairston would have to do is hit about .250. (Now, I'm assuming they mean Jerry Hairston Jr. and not Jerry Hairston Sr. - but with Ned you never know.)
