Trayce Thompson behind schedule in recovery from 2016 back injury
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers opened camp on Wednesday, with pitchers and catchers reporting to Camelback Ranch for the start of Spring Training. The day’s activities primarily consisted of players taking physicals and arranging their lockers.

Per usual, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and manager Dave Roberts met with members of the media, and covered an array of topics pertaining to the club’s offseason and outlook for Spring Training and 2017 regular season.

The talking points included the health of multiple players coming off injury, one of which is outfielder Trayce Thompson.

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, Thompson is behind in his recovery from multiple back fractures:

Thompson played his way into regular playing time last season before succumbing to injury, which was initially diagnosed as lower back irritation. Then in August, it was discovered that Thompson had multiple fractures in his back.

In December, Friedman said the club was taking a cautious approach with Thompson’s rehab process, placing more an emphasis on getting him healthy for the regular season as opposed to Cactus League play. Thompson echoed that sentiment last month, though also said he was eyeing a return in early March.

Thompson hit .225/.302/.436 with 11 doubles, 13 home runs, 32 RBI, a .318 wOBA and 100 wRC+ in 80 games last season. He peaked in May, batting .270/.352/.603 with six home runs and 14 RBI in 21 games (18 starts), leading the Dodgers in several offensive categories during that span.

Thompson logged time in center field (32 games; 26 starts), right field (28;22) and left field (24;13). Uncertainty surrounding his return may have further influenced the Dodgers to sign veteran outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year contract.

What’s more, Gutierrez has hit left-handed pitching well throughout his career, which is an area the Dodgers struggled in last season. Gutierrez’s contract had not yet been finalized as of Wednesday afternoon. Los Angeles must clear a spot on their 40-man roster in order to do so.

Even if Thompson is unavailable for a portion of Spring Training or the regular season, the Dodgers have Andre Ethier, Gutierrez, Kiké Hernandez, Yasiel Puig, Andrew Toles and Scott Van Slyke vying for time in the two corner outfield spots.

Really not good that he has been so slow to recover from this thing. Hard to see that he will go back to being the 20-25 HR potential bat again. Fucking blows, this guy was looking like a legit bat until he started having the problems.

The stuff about Ryu sounds good so far, if he is actually healthy (and that's a big IF), then that further complicates rotation stuff. I think we'd all rather he get that spot over Kazmir.

The depth is such that they may have to option Alex Wood to OKC to keep him stretched out along with Stewart and Stripling.

Joel Sherman had a spot on MLB Tonight, mentioned that "sources" expect other organizations to be all over Dodgers camp looking for a starter (McCarthy or Kazmir) or an OF, and I imagine Joc is the only untouchable.

Because they haven't done it with the Dodgers, people think they're shit. Both McCarthy and Kazmir have the stuff to be middle/front of the rotation pitchers and if healthy, they can be. I'd really love to see both those guy regain their old forms and make this a formidable rotation. Is it likely? No, but I'm still going to root for these guys since it's dumb to root against your own players to prove your own agenda.

    McCarthy/Kazmir was his assumption?
Because I'm thinking Brock/Wood types would be the targets, the younger/cheaper mid-rotation types with upside.
And if Bellinger is getting reps in the OF in Spring Training, there's another untouchable from the OF to go along w/Joc.

They almost make themselves seem like little leaguers w/ the way they circle Utley's jock.
Hopefully Utley can teach CK how to get over in OCT when he doesn't have his best stuff.
Cool to see that they appreciate Utley's leadership, but hopefully some of the other guys in this group will adopt some of his leadership qualities because regardless of what urban legend says - Utley will have to retire one of these days.
Maybe he'll be manager and never leave?

I don't think it's agenda driven, just a lack of faith in two injury prone under achievers, especially McCarthy, whose production has rarely matched his talent.

I don't think they'd move either one without a substantial return, Alex Wood has 2 more seasons of control after 2017, and Brock has 6 more seasons including 2017.

I didn't include Bellinger in that discussion because he isn't a part of the 32 players (roughly) for 25 spots roster crunch, not on the 40-man either.

    I agree.
And they could use a nice spec package after sending so much of the upper tier pitching out over the last year, replenish somewhat even though they still have Buehler/May/Imani/White coming behind Brock/Wood [no homo]
Could stand for some more middle IF depth as well.

Not on the LAD 40 man because of their depth mainly, but still possibly in the bigs by June.
Would probably be on the 40 man for a good amount of teams around the league, if he's in the OF @ camp there will be some buzz, it's inevitable.

    Randy Choate Retires
    By Steve Adams | February 16, 2017

Veteran left-hander Randy Choate, who spent part of the 2016 season in the minor league ranks with the Dodgers and last appeared in the Majors in 2015, tells WFAN’s Sweeny Murti that he has decided to retire. Choate didn’t receive any solid offers to continue playing in 2017, Murti writes, and the 41-year-old southpaw simply said that he “figured it was kind of time to move on.”

I am hoping he is just taking it easy this first week. His fastball is normally 89-92 topping out at 95.
