Like TB, I really don't think it's the pressure or distractions of LA. Puig just isn't good when he faces good major league pitching. He rakes in the minors. He rakes against backend rotation guys in the majors. Over the course of a season he will put up better numbers than Thompson or Toles, but he's useless on a playoff roster against good, short rotations. Sending him to the minors (again) could actually be a sign that we haven't given up on him - Because if the FO has truly given up, the best thing might be to keep him in the majors, don't start him against top pitching so his numbers look good, and trade him by the deadline.

I know we have been criticizing Puig all over this board, but really are the other options really that much better?? Correct me if I am wrong but he has been producing at or near league average the last 2 years correct? If so, then his 6.5M is not crazy out of line. Out of Toles/Thompson/Ethier/SVS......none of those stand out far and away over Puig. So IMO if all those guys are around the same caliber, then why not give Puig, who probably has the highest ceiling, the shot???

Hernandez won out over Taylor due to him being able to man CF. Taylor looked...well.... not good in the OF. Should improve with more time out there. With that said, OKC is going to have a heck of a lineup.
Seager will be back for the last freeway game.

John Valentin said Puig was lacking focus.
Don't know if he meant that Puig couldn't handle LA..don't know if he was talking about Puig's ability to focus in, take direction and apply..don't know if he meant that Puig needs to be on the Chris Davis/ADD plan..don't know if he meant that Puig's just a pea-brained muscle-head.
Valentin didn't go in depth there, as he did with Puig's mechanics.
But even when Ethier was going well in 2015, he couldn't really handle good pitching either and those days are probably gone forever.
Which is to say..man, we need Bellinger to come up and do work.
Toles definitely showed something in the Cubs' series, but yeah, we need Bellinger or Trayce to settle into one of the corners and hit good pitching.
And then hopefully Toles keeps doing what he's doing

    Best news all day
Although, it'd be interesting to see how LAD would do w/o MVP-3 after seeing how they did w/o CK last year

To use one of Fall's favorite phrases, Bellinger is about to Wally Pipp someone. The only question is who. He looks good at 1B, he looks good in the OF, he looks good at the plate... it's only a matter of time. Hide yo injuries.

    i disagree
undeniably more pressure on a perennial contender than, say, the padres
another reason he does well in the minors could be the absence of crowds/attention/pressure
he played well when he first got here because he just went out and played
now he's up there thinking which is not what you want
he's in the worst place possible for a ballplayer -- inside his own head
and it's arguable he'll put up better numbers than trayce/toles with the way he's (down)trending

Seeing Matt Bush pitch after running over some poor bastard's head while driving high as a kite, does giving Puig ( or...gasp...Hatcher) 85 more chances at resurrecting themselves seem so outrageous?
Idk...Maybe it only matters if a person is good at baseball, not what you do/did.
I've heard the comedian with the NFL bit about " it's a pass downfield from the dog killer to the wife beater who got tackled by the murderer"...
Can similar BB jokes be far away?

    All well and good.
But that terrific RF with a missile launcher of an arm on a player that only hit a mediocre .260, bomb a mediocre 16 or so HR, and only drive in 50-60 RBI in a lower pressured part of the lineup. Is not that bad when you factor in the fact that he hits well from both sides of the plate on a team that really needs that. And that his contract is pretty reasonable and is actually a huge bargain when you see what other premium RF/CF are making who has similar stats or worse than Puig.

Roberts believes everyday role with OKC will suit Thompson well
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue 31 minutes ago

In addition to mulling over whether to carry Kiké Hernandez of Chris Taylor on their 2017 Opening Day roster, the Los Angeles Dodgers were also deciding between a final outfielder in Scott Van Slyke and Trayce Thompson.

Thompson was optioned to the Minors on Thursday, which amounted to Van Slyke essentially securing a roster spot with the Dodgers. Although both are capable of playing all three outfield positions, Van Slyke can also back up Adrian Gonzalez at first base.

Thompson only appeared in 11 Cactus League games this year because the Dodgers eased him back from the multiple fractured vertebrae he sustained last season. The limited action may have influenced the Dodgers’ decision.

But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also noted the benefit of Thompson playing everyday for Triple-A Oklahoma City, via J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group:

“To get him back to playing every day in any capacity,” Roberts said of Thompson, “I think is a good thing for him.”

The 26-year-old outfielder put together a strong 2016 Spring Training and earned a spot on the Dodgers Opening Day roster, though Andre Ethier suffering a fractured tibia was a factor.

Thompson went on to bat .225/.302/.436 with 11 doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBI over 80 games with the Dodgers. He enjoyed a particularly hot month of May, hitting .270/.352/.603 with three doubles, six home runs and 14 RBI while appearing in 21 games.

Thompson appeared in 39 consecutive games from May 31 through July 10. However, the streak ending coincided with the book on his 2016 season coming to a close. After experiencing back discomfort in May, Thompson is believed to have sustained the fractures in July while crashing into the fence at Dodger Stadium.

Attempts to recover in time by the postseason proved futile. The Dodgers were cautious with Thompson’s rehab process throughout the offseason and into Spring Training. He maintained since early March that health was not an issue.

Thompson nonetheless is slated for his first experience with Oklahoma City. Considering the Dodgers’ luck in the outfield, it may not be long before the athletic outfielder is back in the Majors.

Yeah, it is. Trayce, for one, had a hell of 100 game run between CHI/LAD ( to begin his big league career) before playing hurt for weeks and watching his numbers tail off because of that. There's some degree of star potential in both Trayce and Toles..I mean I vividly remember Trayce saving LAD's ass a few times in the clutch w/walk off HRs last season, putting together great ABs when LAD needed it most. And then of course Toles w/the big oppo grand slam late in Colorado to cap that big 8th/9th inning rally for the W...

And when it comes to being worthy of post season ABs against good pitching, LAD saw what Toles was capable of against good Cubbie pitching as well. So yeah, LAD just basically waiting until Trayce and/or Bellinger show up and then they can begin to put together a true post season lineup w/guys who are capable of putting together quality ABs 1-8 in the lineup. Like BM said, probably gonna let Puig put up his numbers against mid/back-end starters and then ship him off at the deadline. Send him off to some team that doesn't have to worry about facing shortened playoff rotations with above average pitching. The plan isn't really reinventing the wheel or anything..they tried this last season, as whenever Puig was set to face Strasburg, LAD declined the matchup and gave Puig the day off..and then of course they tried to ship him to MIL thereafter

Although I get that depth is like having extra ammo clips and can be a life saver in certain situations, it can be annoying as hell when the final cut is made.
