Sources: #Padres close to signing shortstop, but it is not Ian Desmond. Barring a surprise, Alexei Ramirez would appear to be their choice.
    ---------------------
Good to see they won't be signing Desmond, Padres pick is protected.

For both sides really. Considering it covers 3 arbitration years and 2 for free agency, he's paid nicely through arbitration but on the low end of free agency if he stays as good as he has been. He gets good security and the Marlins bet on him staying how he is, really nice deal on both ends IMO

    • Outfielder Scott Van Slyke has settled at a $1.225MM figure with the Dodgers, Jon Heyman reports on Twitter. That’s just a shade above his $1.2MM projection. The 29-year-old has emerged as a quality fourth outfielder, though he took a step back offensively last season while dealing with some injuries. All said, he owns a .253/.337/.442 batting line in 708 career plate appearances.

Roberts eager to meet with Puig
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 90 minutes ago

When the Los Angeles Dodgers hired Dave Roberts as manager, the overwhelming response from those with connected to the organization and outside of it, was positive.

Roberts is regarded for his ability to connect with people and it’s a strength the Dodgers hope will play a role in getting the best out of Yasiel Puig.

The 25-year-old Cuban native is currently under investigation by Major League Baseball for his role in a November fight outside a Miami bar, which allegedly began after Puig got physical with his sister.

However, there evidence wasn’t found to support that claim and while Puig won’t face criminal charges, he’s subject to disciplinary action handed down by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred under the league’s overhauled domestic violence policy.

It’s believed MLB will conclude their investigation by March. During his introductory press conference Roberts said he’d yet to meet Puig, but expected to do so in the near future.

That time appears to be at some point on Thursday and the meeting is one the Dodgers skipper is looking forward to, via Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

“I’m looking forward to spending time with him,” Roberts said. “Any player that has success, especially as a young player, then there’s injuries and you don’t have the year you expect to have, I would expect him to have a different outlook in ’16. This will be a big day for me and for him, our first opportunity to be face to face. I’m just going to be honest with him, let him know what our expectations are of him. And for the most part, players have higher expectations than coaches or even the media. It should be good.”

Along with the incident in Miami, Puig’s turbulent offseason includes a former teammate referring to the outfielder as the ‘worst person’ he’s seen in baseball. A.J. Ellis and Adrian Gonzalez both refuted the notion and took responsibility for needing to foster a better relationship with their polarizing teammate.

Gonzalez also believes Roberts’ genuine personality and having Puig’s best interest in mind should bode well for the two establishing a strong connection.

Limited to just 79 games last season due to dealing with hamstring issues, Puig hit .255/.322/.436 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs. He finished the season with a 111 wRC+, 66 strikeouts and 22 walks in 311 plate appearances.

Other NL Officials surprised by Sierra’s contract
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

Since Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman took over the team’s front office after the 2014 season there has been an emphasis on adding pitching depth.

This offseason in particular has proven that, as the team not only re-signed starters Brett Anderson and Brandon Beachy, but also added Scott Kazmir and Kenta Maeda to the mix.

Friedman was not done there though, as the club has reportedly agreed to a six-year, $30 million contract with Cuban Native Yaisel Sierra.

It appears the Dodgers will first attempt to develop the 24 year old as a starter, but he could eventually transition as a relief pitcher.

Sierra primarily served as a reliever during his time in Cuba, and did so exclusively last season.

While the Dodgers have been aggressive in the international market, Sierra’s reported contract came as a surprise to others and isn’t warranted, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney of ESPN:

There was utter shock in other front offices over what the Dodgers paid for Sierra, a 24-year-old right-hander who hasn’t had a lot of on-field success in Cuba and has had command issues. “They are seeing something that we don’t,” said one NL official. Said another: “We didn’t like him and would not have given him a seven-figure bonus” — $1 million — “let alone the absurd contract he got.” Some other teams had similar assessments of Sierra as being a player who might merit a bid of less than $1 million.

In fours seasons pitching in the Cuban League, Sierra was 16-21 with a 4.23 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. His time as a reliever in 2014 was far from a success as he finished with a 6.10 ERA in 62 innings pitched.

With the pitching depth that Friedman has amassed this offseason, it doesn’t appear there will be a spot for Sierra in the rotation any time soon. A strong spring could propel him to starting for Triple-A Oklahoma City, but a role out of the bullpen appears more likely.

I can only guess that the other FOs are not in the genius category, and are incapable of seeing whatever it is ours does in Sierra. Sort of like the other Yasiel, oddly.
I am curious as to why the Junior GMen aren't questioning the 5 million per year for someone that evidently left others pretty flat. When the amount of LA $ spent and the length of the contract is so front and center with every other player that comes up, or is actually signed, ad infinitum.
Must be blind faith...very powerful. Sometimes I wish I had it. Probably too old...
Maybe just join the Johnny Depth Cult and be satisfied.
A World Series even just appearance would go so far though.
    Salvation.

It's a very good deal. Let's hope he lives up to his contract. He deserves it and it's good to see him finally break out.

Give Timmeh a little money for a little time and sign him...y'know...for depth.

Yeah, there seems to be an injury related reason to his dip in production last year.
If he hits only against LH pitching and mostly at home he splits at a near .900 ops.
Thats last years stats where he had a down year. For the price though he is great in that defined role.
With Ethier starting against RH pitchers also putting put an ops around .900.
Those two as the main guys handling LF would probably be our best option.
Although if Kike is not as relied upon in the IF he should get the reps in LF against LH pitching.
    He kills it.

Slow news day so here's something pretty cool:

Puig asked for Maury Wills help

    http://lat.ms/1Q1qDhv

I mean this in all seriousness and might get mocked but, I believe Puig is the Dodgers best base runner. I don't know if "smartest" but, best. Last season was a shitshow on the bases and tons of Dodgers make mistakes out there, but Puig (and Utley?) are the only two who are aggressive enough to offset those mistakes. Just my opinion, but I'll be okay with a guy getting thrown out if he's gonna offset that with aggressiveness and taking the extra base. It's when you have guys that get thrown out and are slow as fuck that it's terrible

Anyways, anything to cut down Puig's mistakes would be great for the Dodgers and hope he can even rack up double digit steals

On the surface, it looks like last season may have gotten to him. Hopefully this is him turning over a new leaf and not him trying to get the media somewhat off his back. This article made me pretty happy to read, along with his apparent off season training regiment with some of the leagues best players. Hopefully he comes in on fire and can get this season off on the right foot.

I think Puig, now that the hamstring bs has started in earnest, will always be suseptible to that injury.
This year presents itself, imo, as Puig's time of LA Dodger reckoning, and it is amazing, if Knight's book is accurate, how Puig even lasted this long, considering his head shaking behavior.Hard to believe.
Kasten's hard and fast rule of zero tolerance for assholes, like Wilson, for instance, seems not to be so "word" when it comes to Yasiel. He gets the look the other way...
Kasten can be full of shit it seems, just like everybody else.
Unless the book is total bullshit.

Dodgers have settled all there arb cases except Jansen

Turner got 5 mil. I was hoping they'd give him an extension, maybe make 2016 salary like 8 mil and buy out a couple free agent years

Cause he's a possible free agent and it's not crazy to say he'd be the best offensive player available in a very weak class. Considering the Dodgers currently don't have a great solution in the farm system for 3B, it's probably a great idea to look into locking him up. (As well as Jansen)
