Roberts confident Seager will be ready opening day
by Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — 20 minutes ago

PHOENIX -- The mood surrounding Corey Seager's left knee was considerably more optimistic on Sunday morning than it was on Saturday night, though perhaps it had more to do with what was avoided rather than Seager's realistic timetable for return.

One night after saying it wold be a stretch for Seager to be ready for opening day after getting shut down for one to two weeks with no baseball activity with a sprained left knee, manager Dave Roberts said on Sunday he was confident that Seager would be ready to go on April 4 when the Dodgers open against the Padres in San Diego.

"I still think that we have time," Roberts said. "We're still pushing it, but I'm optimistic."

Seager suffered a sprained knee, but was in so much pain around the outside of the knee that heading into his MRI exam he feared a meniscus tear, which likely would have required surgery that would have sidelined him for months and not weeks.

"It's just a mild sprain of the knee," Seager said Sunday. "From where my pain was, we were worried about the meniscus. That's not something you want to deal with this close to the year. Luckily, everything was fine. Structure was fine."

Seager had some swelling in his knee on Thursday but had the excess fluid drained. Then on Friday against the Angels, he singled to left in his first at-bat. As the throw from right field went to third base to try to get Joc Pederson, Seager took an aggressive turn around first base but stopped, and that's when he felt his knee buckle.

He stayed in the game for two more innings, and one more at-bat before exiting the game.

"I felt good the first AB, and I wanted another one," Seager said. "It probably wasn't my brightest moment, but in the middle of the game the adrenalin's going and you want to get ready for the year."

Seager won't do many baseball activities for the next week or two, but will still be able to workout.

"As I understand it now, he's going to kind of lay low for a week, but still do things to keep his arm in shape, and then that second week start to progress a little bit," Roberts said. "As far as seeing him doing baseball activities, it's going to be a couple of weeks and then we'll reassess. But where we're at on the calendar there would still be time to get a slew of at-bats on the other side."

If Seager is back ready to hit in minor league or simulated games in two weeks, on March 27, that leaves him just eight days to cram enough at-bats in to get ready for the season. Seager was confident but cautious that he'd be ready for April 4.

"Hopefully it's not [a question]," Seager said. "It's all on the symptoms and all on how it's feeling, so as soon as those are gone I'll get back into baseball, get some ABs and move on."

    let the kid heal
better to have him miss some time in march/april than in august-october

^ Absolutely. We've seen time and time again what a nagging injury can do to a player throughout the course of a year

When I was in HS he coached a team out here in CO and we played them for Legion ball every summer. Wish I could play them this year, I'd bat flip every AB, haha.

Beachy making case for rotation spot
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com — 12 hours ago
    [IMG]
PHOENIX -- Dodgers management is entering its second year believing that Brandon Beachy has a place in the starting rotation, and he moved closer to that Saturday night.
Beachy threw three scoreless innings in a start against the Cubs (won by the Dodgers, 6-5), reinforcing the belief that he's the preferred choice to move into the starting spot opened by last week's unexpected back surgery for Brett Anderson.

"He threw well," said manager Dave Roberts. "Every time he goes out there, from the bullpen to each game, he continues to get better. His pitches were sharper today. Just another positive outing."

Beachy had to work around a pair of doubles, he bounced some breaking balls and he wasn't thrilled with fastball command in the first inning. That said, he insists the right elbow that underwent two Tommy John surgeries is healthy, and he trusts it will stay that way.

"I'm on track," he said. "I got better today from the first start five days ago, and I figure to be better five days from now. I wasn't very efficient, but I am missing barrels."

Since 2012, Beachy has made only seven regular-season starts in the Major Leagues, two of them for the Dodgers last year.

That would so sad if we did...not for obvious reasons (even third...or second ), but for the droning dirge about how "bright the future" is that has to be endured.
And then, go right into 4 years of Hillary Clinton ? Can this be a really a possibility?
    Nah....

Maeda puts together another strong outing
by Eric Avakian | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

As the Los Angeles Dodgers progress through their 2016 Spring Training schedule, first-year manager Dave Roberts inches closer to needing to set a starting rotation for the regular season.

It very well could — likely should — change as the season progresses, given Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu remain on the recovery trail. However, one constant may be found in Kenta Maeda.

Tuesday marked the Japanese right-hander’s third outing of the spring. Facing a Chicago White Sox lineup that resembled what may be seen on Opening Day, the 27 year old again some of the command he’s lauded for, en route to another strong outing.

    From ESPN's Keith Law:

Maeda’s scoreless Spring Training came to an end in the fourth as an Adrian Gonzalez two-base error led to the White Sox pushing across two unearned runs.

Maeda’s ability to nibble at the corners and get batters to swing at pitches out of the strike zone kept the White Sox off balance.

The 3.2 innings tossed is the most for Maeda in any of his starts during his young career with the Dodgers.

Now through three Spring Training starts, Maeda has thrown a combined 8.2 innings pitched and allowed just two unearned runs on seven hits, walked four and collected eight strikeouts.

MLB will not suspend Yasiel Puig
By Steve Adams | March 16, 2016 at 3:51pm CDT

Major League Baseball will not suspend Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig in connection to domestic violence allegations earlier this winter, reports Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Per Shaikin, the league found no evidence to substantiate allegations that Puig hit his sister in an incident at a Miami bar in November. Notably, no charges were filed against Puig and no arrests were made at the time. Shaikin notes that under the newly implemented domestic violence policy, players can receive discipline other than suspensions (e.g. mandatory counseling), but such discipline is not disclosed to the public. Earlier this month, ESPN’s Pedro Gomez reported that Puig was not expected to receive a suspension. Major League Baseball has since issued the following statement:

“The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has concluded its investigation into an alleged incident involving Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig and his sister in a Miami-area nightclub on November 26, 2015. The investigation included interviews of witnesses, including Puig and his sister, as well as a review of video footage from inside the nightclub at the time of the alleged incident. The Office of the Commissioner’s investigation did not uncover any witness who supported the assault allegation; both Puig and his sister denied that an assault occurred; and the available video evidence did not support the allegation. Thus, barring the receipt of any new information or evidence, no discipline will be imposed on Puig in connection with the alleged incident.”

TMZ reported in late November that Puig had shoved his sister at the bar, prompting a fight between Puig and the bouncer. However, a police spokesperson said at the time that it appeared the only physical contact came between Puig and the bouncer, and TMZ ultimately retracted its report, Shaikin notes.

The ruling from commissioner Rob Manfred comes not long after Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was suspended for 30 games under the domestic violence policy. While Chapman, like Puig, was not arrested and did not face charges, the left-hander did acknowledge that after being shoved to the ground by his girlfriend’s brother, he discharged a firearm in his garage multiple times out of frustration. That Chapman acted in such a manner undoubtedly contributed to the league’s decision to give him a 30-game ban despite a clear lack of evidence that he physically harmed his girlfriend.

Puig and Chapman represent two of the three offseason cases for Manfred and the new domestic violence policy. Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes, accused of assaulting his wife at a Hawaii hotel in October, is the last remaining case. He has been placed on administrative leave and is set to head to trial on Opening Day. The league will not make a decision on Reyes’ discipline until after his criminal proceedings have drawn to a close.

Ryu won't pitch in Cactus League games
by Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — 2 hours ago
    [IMG]
PHOENIX -- Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu came out of his 20-pitch bullpen session on Monday feeling fine, with no ill effects on his surgically repaired left shoulder, but a realistic view of his timetable has his eventual return to the team pushed back even further.

Manager Dave Roberts said on Wednesday that Ryu is not expected to pitch in a Cactus League game while the Dodgers are in Arizona, which makes sense because there are only two weeks left at Camelback Ranch and Ryu threw only fastballs on Monday, and reduced intensity at that.
"When you're trying to get ready for a season, and you look at the timetable for Ryu, he's pushed back," Robert said. "There are guys we have to focus on that are going to be here. Where he's at with the training staff, we have to put more emphasis on the guys who are going to break for us."

Ryu missed all of 2015 after having arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

After Monday, Ryu's first bullpen session since Feb. 26, he is likely to throw another bullpen session this week, Roberts said. Given the relative infancy of Ryu's throwing progression and the long road ahead, his goal earlier this spring of a May return and 150 innings in 2016 is more of a pipe dream now.

"I don't have a calendar and you have to map it out, but a throwing program takes time. I'm not going to put a date on it, but if it were May, it's unrealistic at this point," Roberts said. "There is a progression that he and Honey and the training staff have to go through just to get a starting pitcher back."

With Brett Anderson out 3-5 months after back surgery and Ryu out likely at least the first two months of the season, the Dodgers will fill the back end of their rotation with Alex Wood and a group including Mike Bolsinger, Brandon Beachy, Zach Lee, Ross Striplng, Jose De Leon and Julio Urias.

"It taps into our depth, and guys have to move up in the rotation. He was a guy we had penciled into the top of the rotation," Roberts said. "You have to adapt."
