Yup. What a useless rule. So much for justifying keeping a Hanser Alberto on your roster.

But now I need to ask. Obviously this rule wouldn't apply to Ohtani. But where do you draw the line? Say you have a mostly position player who's also a serviceable pitcher. Do you need to designate him as a two-way player before the season?

I'm still not following the Dodgers gameplan for this offseason. If resetting the luxury tax rate was the priority, they're failing. They were $5M over before Peralta, and his signing has just made it worse. Not my preference, but if that was the goal, they should've just committed to this strategy and traded someone to ensure they got below the threshhold - sacrificing this season for the good of the future. Now, they're going to be over for another season, thereby increasing the penalty rate for next year, so we'll be in even a bigger hole next winter. Might as well have just signed some big names to keep us competitive.

I can't help but think this front office is like a deer in headlights - unsure of what to do so they do pretty much nothing.

Honestly I haven't followed him closely recently to know much about him, but based on his stats... really good reliever 7-8 years ago with 120 saves over 3 seasons and phenomenal ERA. Then something happened and he lost the primary closer job, but still picked up a handful of saves over the next few seasons with pretty good ERA numbers. I'm assuming he was hurt last year. Now 35, does he have anything left?

 

Only possible explanation is that there's a belief that Roberts will be fired.
