Yeah, I saw that. I like Maddux as a person and all, but to me it seems like he's copping out. I understand LaRussa, his playing career with the A's and most of his managing with the Cards but Maddux should choose a team, IMO.

I don't see why they don't just slot Capuano back in there. He's proven he can be a great #5. No need to go out and sign another guy to a multi-year contract when the internal options are more than satisfactory.

I disagree. Maddux had 1 more season in ATL than Chicago, plus he started his career with the Cubs and a lot of players have a soft spot for the team that drafted/signed them originally. It's not as though he spent 18 of his 23 seasons with ATL and is just doing this to spite them.

The Brewers have signed infielder Joe Thurston to a minor-league contract according to a team release. Thurston collected 307 plate appearances for the Cardinals in 2009 and last appeared in the big leagues in 2010. He played in Mexico in 2013.

It's a one season difference, but it's also 500+ more innings in Atlanta, which is about 2.5 seasons. His numbers are way better in Atlanta AND that's where he had all his postseason success. I wouldn't have a problem if he decided to choose the Cubs, I just think he should choose. It's going to piss one fan base off either way, but now he has two fan bases up in arms. Make a choice, let history have a debate subject.

Remember that the Cubs organization also molded Maddux and probably has a soft spot for them. He has great memories with both.

Plus, if Maddux got to choose, I think we should respect his decision. Normally the Hall chooses for you.

    • Michael Young hasn't decided whether he will play in 2014, but if he does, it will be for the Dodgers, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweets. A report earlier this month indicated that Young was thinking about retiring.

There was a report last night that the Dodgers have checked in on Ervin Santana. This would be hard to see the Dodgers doing when they keep preaching the idea of developing through the farm as Santana would cost the team a pick. I wonder if this would be something paired with another deal, perhaps interest in Stephen Drew. It would not make the most sense with Guerrero and Uribe now on board, but if the team isn't sold on Guerrero and/or are worried of another Uribe step backwards this could be a solid pick up.

The Dodgers would have to sign Capuano first. He's not under contract, so he's not really an internal option ATM.

doubt their interest in Santana turns into anything. he wants too many years. they're probably just putting some pressure on Arroyo to take what they're offering. the longest deal i could see them adding a starter for is a 2yr deal. at this point, with our 1-2-3 locked in, it's all about either bridging to Lee/Stripling for the back end, or a Scherzer/Price signing to give us a 4th horse. basically, either they look to the young guns or they go big on the free agent/trade market...nothing in the middle aka Santana or Ubaldo for 40-50M. that's why the Arroyo interest makes sense in a way...although if they bring Arroyo in i suspect they be DFA'ing Beckett.

i'd love to see them bring in Drew. decent OBP and give us insurance at 3 spots in the infield. don't know if they'd do it after committing the money to Guerrero though.

    kinda agree
but i would take him on an inexpensive 1yr deal vs those other scrubs on multi-yr deals and losing a draft pick
josh and chad are going to take some time, so put him at #5 for a couple months
would hate to rush bringing up one of the kids for a #5 spot
maybe we could talk arroyo into a higher 1yr deal w/an option vs. a multi-yr?
still, arroyo and haren... that's going to be a lot of souvenirs in the bleachers :duck:

well they won't lose a draft pick if they sign Arroyo. give me Arroyo on a 2yr deal over Crappy on a 1yr. i don't wanna see Crappy anymore. i'll take my chances with Honeycutt working with Arroyo...at least Arroyo pitches well against our division foes and never misses a start. Crappy was a bum and had health issues to boot.

I actually like Capuano, but the health issues are key. Still, if we can get someone in on a 1-year deal that would be ideal. For all we know, Price could be a Dodger before the season is over, Bills could come back, or White could dig up another Cuban gem before the end of 2014.
