Price is a free agent in 2016, not next year. That's one of the reasons Tampa is asking for so much in a trade.

Scherzer is a FA next year. There has been talk of an extension, but Scherzer is a Scott Boras client and Boras is notorious for taking players to free agency.

Price is not a free agent until after the 2015 season. The reason behind all the trade talks is that the Rays like to trade guys 2 years from FA to get more value back.

Based on the report posted in the minor league thread I'd really like to see what we have in Mr. Lee before locking up every spot in the rotation. We have 4 legit starters and a hopefully healthy Beckett and a recovering Bills. Let Fife and Magill fight it out for the 5th spot temporarily if Beckett fails. I know it doesn't sound appetizing but I know I don't want to give up draft picks and unless Arroyo wants a 1 year deal I don't want him.

May Arroyo stay in the...uh... the arroyo. Play his guitar, make CDs, be talented in all ways he can, just not pitch for us.
Uggla means owl on this one.

Don't understand the Arroyo hate, he's not THAT bad. And remember, we're talking 5th starter. We ain't gettin' Cole Hamels for the job. Having said that, I wouldn't give him multi-years either.

    fwiw...

By Jeff Todd [January 28 at 3:44pm CST]

A.J. Burnett plans to play this year, a source tells Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and the hurler may be open to playing for a team other than the Pirates. This news throws a considerable wrinkle into the free agent pitching market.

Burnett, 37, is coming off of two outstanding seasons in Pittsburgh. After a 202 1/3-inning, 3.51 ERA effort in 2012, Burnett threw 191 innings of 3.30 ball last year. He led all National League starters in 2013 with 9.8 K/9.

Burnett landed in the ninth position among baseball's top fifty free agents, according to MLBTR's Tim Dierkes. For teams looking to add impact without taking on long-term obligations, Burnett makes for a tantalizing option. Assuming that Burnett prefers to sign for a short term, he would fit nicely in many rotations around the game.

Prior to today's news, Burnett had been expected to pitch for the Pirates or retire, with the latter option looking increasingly likely. Now, he becomes one of the best arms available on the open market. The Orioles have been mentioned as a possible alternative landing spot for Burnett given his ties to the area.

This is the guy we have been waiting for. Seems like a long shot, but would love to get Burnett. He fits the bill for a short term contract, no draft pick and would be a more than valuable #4. Shit he'd be a good #2 on most clubs. His postseason numbers are shit, but if Haren is going good then he could be our 4th pitcher in a 7 game series.

I wasn't enamored with the Haren signing, but I do believe the home games will help them both keep the ball in the yard. Now if we can keep Kemp from going after the ones that leave the yard...

Yasiel's reckless driving charge was dismissed today by the DA'S office in Florida. Knew it was just racial profiling baloney!

The speeding charge still stands, only the reckless charge was dropped.

For Burnett, you offer 1yr/16mil. Yes, it is an overpay for what he is but he could be awesome for us. We are talking a legit SP who could be outstanding in the ravine. He slot in behind Haren. Look at it this way:
    Kershaw
    Greinke
    Burnett
    Ryu
    Haren

By separating the lefties, you could really fuck with some teams who are try to play the L/R game.

Technically, given his fastball to Werth's wrist that cost us a good player for four years, I would say that he owes us.

God, I know I have said this more than once, but I was there when he ran into the wall at Coors. I was in the 1B line concourse getting a beer (so at least 400+feet away) and when he hit that wall, it sounded like a gunshot went off right next to me. I'm pretty sure if had run into the wall at that speed, I'd be dead and we wouldn't have needed a casket since I would have disintegrated on impact.

    fwiw

By Jeff Todd [January 29 at 3:55pm CST]

In spite of interest from twelve clubs, free agent starter Bronson Arroyo says that he has yet to receive an actual hard offer from a club, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports. "I am a guy who's performed for the last 10 years as consistently as anybody in the game," said Arroyo. "And for some reason, nobody's thrown me an offer yet."

Approaching his age-37 season, Arroyo is represented by Terry Bross. He has posted an earned run average of less than four runs per nine innings in four of his last five seasons, and has made at least 32 starts in every season since 2005. Last year, in 202 innings, Arroyo posted a 3.79 ERA and 5.5 K/9 against 1.5 BB/9.

The pitcher's statements are somewhat surprising in light of the widespread interest he has reportedly received. The veteran's name has been amongst the most-mentioned on MLBTR, in large part due to his outstanding record of durability.

Most recently, Arroyo was said to have fielded two-year offers from no fewer than four clubs, with the market slowly coming around to the idea of giving him a third. The widespread perception on Arroyo has been that he was simply waiting to find another guaranteed year.

Indeed, it is not clear whether Arroyo's claim -- he said that he does not "even have an offer to turn down" -- is impacted by his stance on what kinds of offers he would be open to receiving. Stark reports that Arroyo spent most of the offseason asking for three years with a guarantee exceeding $30MM. Though Stark does not name the current asking price on Arroyo, an executive predicts that he'll get around $10MM per year over a two-year term, with an option year on the end.

Of course, in his profile of Arroyo's free agent case, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes predicted that the veteran would land a two year deal at $12MM per season. As Dierkes argued back in September, a two year deal was likely the most that could be expected, given Arroyo's age.
