If the Dodgers could acquire one player at the deadline, who would you prefer?

  1. Machado

  2. Front line starter (degrom, thor, et al)

Keep trying to trade Puig guys, maybe you will get your wish and the Dodgers will have to rely on Matt Kemp in RF.

According to my totally disputable calculations the Dodgers only have approximately 9 million under the luxury tax of $197,000.00 if the high end of arbitration counter offers. Coob is looking at $14 million AAV which is over. Like I wrote I could be completely flawed in my calculations.

    Potentially shaping up that way

Still a little ways to go, but they are continuing to look for creative ways to give themselves a little grease
Puig for Bradley Jr. would've bought them another 2-3M in relief
I imagine they're still looking for a way to shed Yasmani as well
They're close, but of course they could offer Cobb a backloaded contract as well

Fragile as he is between the ears, possibly
Still think the place for Puig could be with Tito in Cleveland, have Encarnacion and Ramirez there to possibly support/lead him
Don't know who we'd get back..maybe Danny Salazar since they're shopping him hard it seems and then LAD would get another spec or two to add more depth to the system
Come to think of it, Cleveland could use Yasmani as well, at least in the immediate future. They have a kid moving into AAA that's going to be pretty good behind the plate down the line, but they could use Yasmani VS RHP immediately because Yan Gomes isn't doing enough in the meantime
Maybe something like Puig, Yasmani and James Marinan for Danny Salazar, Zach McAllister, A.Civale, and J.Merryweather

~$14M according to cots contracts (which I think has excessive arb projections on Fields, Cingrani, Grandal and Hernandez) so they could wind up closer to $17M (not to say that's enough, as they are likely to want deadline flexibility).

Moving Grandal is probably the easiest fix, takes the projected tax number up around ~$24M. FWIW, backloading contracts doesn't really help, deferring salary however does.

Yeah that's what I was looking for. They don't really need to open up more space to sign him if he plays ball. That said, at what point in Cobb talks, if they're moving towards say a Kazmir-ish 16M AAV, do they then just try to get Darvish back on a similar creative deal that maybe hits 20M AAV over the life of the deal? Of course the upside is with Darvish. I wonder what the Cubbies offered Darvish, don't remember any reports of an offer, but have to imagine that they went well beyond the Cobb offer. Darvish said it was a good meeting, but really what else is he going to say publicly?

Moving Yasmani is the easiest fix indeed, but where to is the question? I'm thinking Cleveland, maybe. Baltimore should probably value him as well.

In addition to deadline flexibility, I assume when players are on the DL the replacement player’s salary puts a hit on the cap payroll. It wouldn’t normally be an issue, but since we will likely be close to the cap and we use the DL so liberally it’s something to consider. If we average 6-8 players on the DL, that’s an extra $3-4 million hit.

Good point about Yaz hadn't thought about that. As for the back loaded contract ideas I wish Cobb or Darvish would take those but I can't see that happening especially with a Borasssss client like Cobb. The longer this slow FA market goes on it'll be possible of course.

Will be interesting to see where they go from here
Still likely out there looking for a home for Kemp, seem to be looking for an opportunity to sell high on Puig, and then of course the aforementioned Yasmani is on the block
There's still some solid/cheap options on trade market..we thought Cole was going to NYY weeks back, AA has Teheran over there in ATL, CLE is shopping Salazar, etc.
All's quiet on Archer right now, although, Tampa probably wants quality volume for him..maybe more than LAD wants to give up

Because we know they're giving Tampa the stiff arm when it comes to Buehler and rightfully so, so what's next? Put together a package of quality volume. At that point, if I'm Tampa I want Mitch White, I want Verdugo..scratch that. You know what? With reports being what they are on Verdugo and his maturity and questions about his commitment, if I'm Tampa give me Jeren Kendall or DJ Peters instead. Fuck Verdugo and those potential Puig-ish/Toles-ish problems if I'm Tampa. A small market team like Tampa that's rebuilding should value make up pretty highly, can't afford flubs and can't afford to contaminate the other young players while we're rebuilding/losing. Need high character types that can handle hard times and be better for it.

But yeah, so if I'm Tampa give me Mitch White, Dennis Santana, Will Smith and either Jeren Kendall or DJ Peters. And maybe throw Trayce Thompson on top of that. I want at least 40% of your Top 10 specs if I can't have Buehler. Then you can have Archer and his 4 years of control, shit, I might throw in Wilson Ramos. A tough deal to make if you're the nerds..even if you turn around and deal Yasmani and Kemp and gain some specs in those deals. You'd hope they could sit down and figure something reasonable out eventually because it makes sense for these two to work together here being that LAD pretty much has the healthiest developmental system in the game. And then of course Archer's contract is beautiful and exactly what LAD is looking for while in a payroll/tax pinch. But then the fact that everybody always needs pitching and are always looking to upgrade and make room, all of these teams like PIT with Cole, AA with Teheran, TB with Archer, etc. want to be the team holding the last quality and hold that leverage. Shit's probably slowing up this so-so FA pitching market.

If we assume those players are already on the 40-man (15 players on the 40-man at $150k) the bump to the 25-man is only ~$400k for the whole season, so some pro-rated amount of that. Unless the player goes on the 60-day that opens up a 40-man spot and a whole other can of worms.

The key open sesame phrase seems to be " it looks like they're done "
Repeat that phrase and the nerds will wake up and pull a 3 team trade
