Major League players are well off because the player’s association keeps demanding more, so kudos to them. They are better off than players in the other major sports. I’m interested to see what they actually fight for - higher minimum wages would be on top of my list because it’s not uncommon to see the best player on the team making 500k while a utility infielder who barely plays is bringing in $5 million. I could care less if Bryce Harper only makes $300 million in his career instead of $400 million, and I bet (with the exception of massaging his ego) Bryce could care less too.

    agreed
the mlb players union is the strongest [union] of any professional sport
the players owe curt flood and marvin miller for everything they have...
and, sadly, i seriously doubt 10% of them even know who they were
the 1994 strike nearly killed baseball
didn't/doesn't matter if the players were [or are] right...
if you're getting paid $500k-$30mm a year as @THINKBLUE alluded, fans want to see you on the field
would be a different case if owners were being unreasonably tight and the players were getting screwed
but for an owner/fo mgmt to be apprehensive or reluctant to offer someone a guaranteed contract for 10 years and $30-$40 million that could potentially cripple their franchise for years to come....
    that's just being prudent
and this coming from someone [as most of you know] who has been 100% in favor of signing harper from day one

    want to play every day?...
how about showing that you can meat
because, sorry... even when you're not good, you are not "still really good"
unless .226/.305/.376 against lhp is the new good
    entitled little ckunt
    • "I should be in the lineup every single day," Bellinger told The Athletic. "I don't think there's a question about that. Even when I'm not good, I'm still really good."

I actually didn’t know this, so I googled it.

Anyone who plays one day in the majors earns healthcare for life.

In the majors for 43 days and you earn a pension of $34,000 per year that increases to the max of $220,000 per year after 10 years.

    Damn, that is nice.

They have a Vanguard 401k plan. Players don't even have to contribute to it and their team will contribute $48,000 per year.

    those are some sick benes
when you think about how many guys are pulling those and how much that costs...
not to mention fines and upkeep on the stadiums etc. it adds up
not to say the owners aren't cashing in still but they also take all the risk
and pay off every one of those massive contracts regardless of performance
i think owners have every right not to pay for overpriced players
one day and free healthcare for life is amazing

The truth is, players can still negotiate for the best deals they can get. There are no player maxes (like in the NBA), and the luxury tax is high enough that there are only a handful of teams affected by it.

In the case of Harper and Machado, the only thing stopping them from signing tomorrow is themselves. There are offers.

I would only add that the only thing stopping the players are themselves AND, most importantly, their agents. Their interest in their own commissions is another separate issue.

Borass in particular was famous for putting together comparative analysis portfolios for his clients to justify contract demands.

Ironic that the quant analaysis in baseball nowadays is what is causing this chokehold in the FA markets.

    Borass should go to hell.

They have nothing to complain offers are out there. Borass is crazy ain’t gonna get what you want.

If I am an owner and I don’t like the risk then they must come down There is no collusion it’s call spending smart.

If players want 300MM + to be more of a normality there is a simple solution, non guaranteed contacts.
