I still remember back when teams had maybe ONE starting player hitting around .225 - only because he was a defensive gem at SS or something.

don't understand fully all the thinking but hard to argue w anything the guy says other than outey and vargey
this team is absolutely insane top to bottom and i think beyond having good players he has good guys
not saying Soto isn't a good guy i have no idea but didn't like losing Lux and May in any deal
in all the years of watching baseball a WS is of course the pinnacle but watching a young player develop is a close second

The one thing that makes me realize that we are in the Golden Age of Hypocrisy, and the Dodgers are firmly entrenched in it, is that AF "made a run at Soto, made a run at JD Martinez, and also a run at a starting pitcher", whowever it was. Then in response to the abject failure of it all, we are told, " the FO is fine with standing pat with what we have and the returning pieces"...IT CAN'T BE BOTH, I say.
Either you tried to improve the team and were in the trade game, or you were standing pat. Wtf?
It's an insult to a fan's intelligence, imo.
    Why the bullshit ?
Oh, because we're not supposed to know the Padres signed FOUR monsters ?
    Uh...it's not a secret, boys...

That would be like Doolittle's raid on Japan after Pearl Harbor, but Arte won't let that be.
In fact, I think he'd prefer SD as a landing place for him if ever it became a possibility.

    @DodgersTailgate

According to Jon Heyman, the Dodgers were near the type of package SD ended up dealing to the Nats for Juan Soto. They were also given a chance to exceed it by adding major league ready players to their offer, i.e., Tony Gonsolin, which the Dodgers were reluctant to do.

Close to it was.. what exactly? Considering the Padres also got Josh Bell, who was probably worth two of those guys by himself. Say Bell was worth Voit and like Susana/Wood, that means Soto was worth Gore, Abrams, Hassell, and Susana/Wood? What is the Dodgers equivalent to that? I'd say Pepiot is about equal to Gore. Hassell is probably above Vargas, but not as valuable as Cartaya, and there is no real comp to someone like Abrams who had solid minors #'s but struggled in the big leagues so far, and I don't know enough about the rest of the Padres package to say much else. I personally still think the Nats got absolutely fleeced and should have demanded Cronenworth in any deal.

I dont think its that way at all. I think MGT was in on all those guys you mentioned but were only willing to give up so much. Lets all remember Dodgers are at the top of the NL. You dont think rival GM put pressure on the Nats to not help the Dodgers get EVEN better??!! Which i bet added to the Dodger price vs everyone elses price. Also I would not be shocked to learn that the Nats didnt want to trade with the Dodgers after the trade last year. Keibert and Grey are not exactly lighting anything up. In the end Betts/Freeman/Turner >Machado/Tatis/Soto. Im ok watching our DL guys return and seeing how this plays out. Then in December use the top prospects to get Ohtani.

Guess I didn't explain what I meant that well...I was referring to the present attitude being laid out there that the Dodgers didn't even care or really try to get these monsters at all. We were just about completely satisfied with what we have...
Then you hear and read they took serious runs at everyone. I think it's either one way or the other. Not both.
Don't cover up losing out big time by pretending we weren't even involved when we certainly were...big time.
Also, I think we have a miniscule to infinitesimal chance of landing Ohtani.
    But...I hope you're absolutely right.
    Man, that would be something.
    Really would be something.
