Tatis contract details have him making 1, 5, 11, 23 then the 36 million kicks in essentially when Machado is off. Padres did good on this and can add more during the first few years of his deal

And they're paying him 9 million less for 5 years than LA is paying for 2 of Bauer...is that right ?
    Hmmmm....
Sure glad I'm not paying them...I couldn't even afford half that.
    Covid and all.
    Profits down.

Padres bought out Tatis' rookie years that would not have even paid him a million a season. Instead of Tatis making 3.4 million over three season they are giving him 17 million. If anything goes wrong San Diego is absolutely screwed because that contract is crazy backloaded.

They are banking on a win within the next few years. If they don't the Pads will be having luxury tax issues, lack of premier draft picks, Machado gone and no money to replace him. Go big or go home. I enjoy the game

Watch the Giants closely. There is a strong Dodgers circa 2014-16 vibe going on up there. Their farm is getting stronger and they've already pulled four rabbits out of a hat with Yastrzemski, Solano, Flores and Dickerson. The big difference being that the Giants just did not have the talent built in like we did when Zaidi came aboard, not to mention that he has actually pushed back against his owners that want to spend money and buy their way out of this slump. A majority of their bad contracts come off the books this season and I would bet money that they are going to be getting in on some of the big names in the year ahead. This division is going to be REALLY annoying in about 2 years where we may have 4 legit playoff contenders... and the Rockies.

The Dodgers acquired Ryan Noda from the Blue Jays today to complete the Ross Stripling deal. Here is what I can find on him:
    • From Fangraphs he did not make their top 39, but came up in the other prospects of note category: Noda has elite walk rates, his exit velos are very strong, and he’s hit for power at every level of the minors. He also strikes out a lot for someone older than is usual for his level, which I think is evidence he’ll fall on the wrong side of the Quad-A bubble.
    • From Prospects1500 who had him at #32: Noda was a promising power hitter in the low minors early in his career but his numbers continued to decline in 2019. Left off the alternate site roster he may be reaching his peak in this organization. There is still hope though that he will figure it out this season with AA New Hampshire.
Sounds like the better piece in all this was Williams. This dude strikes out A TON, but man his walk rate is also insane.

Man, got to love the internet...
    • Late last night a random Twitter account made an obscure tweet. Why is this relevant? Every time this has happened, the Padres have almost immediately completed a major deal. It has been believed for some time that this account belongs to either Padres pitcher Chris Paddack, his brother or both of them. Padres fans started murmuring and getting excited. Soon after, a fan from the Padres Reddit page chimed in that he’s hearing that the Padres and Brewers are close to a deal that would send Josh Hader their way. Why does this matter? This is the same person that has broke many of the clubs deals this off-season long before anyone else in the media did. We get folks like this every offseason and it always seems like they misfire once people start calling them a legit source, so take with a giant grain of salt. Still something to watch today and this would be incredibly annoying if it were true.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. dropped 42lbs this offseason. Targeted quickness, balance, strength - while very focused on the weight loss. Has felt improvement in every aspect of his game. #BlueJays

I'll be interested to see how he comes out this season. Disappointing 2020, but I am really not faulting a lot of folks since it was such a fucked up situation. Still, this kid has all the talent in the world to be something special. If he step his game up, the Blue Jays should give the Yankees a run for their money, but I don't see them being able to do that without Vladdy Jr stepping his game way up.

    • Dustin May supposedly hit 101 MPH on the first day of hitters against live pitching today. The proper response to that when standing in the box would be "fuck that" and walking away.
    • Zach McKinstry said today that he's been working with Max Muncy since last month.
    • McKinstry also said that Pepiot, Miller, Gray, Jackson and Carrillo were incredibly impressive last year at the Alt Site. Called them all "elite arms".
    • Dave Roberts said that we will be seeing Josiah Gray very soon
And now Padres insider Kevin Acee is saying the Padres are working on something big that he would be "in shock" if Preller pulls it off. Here we go....

imo the Dodgers have to move to block a Padre acquisition of Hader
not that its the end of the world if they did get him but we should be able to easily beat whatever they have on the table

It depends, there is a rumor that the Padres have either floated Morejon and Cronenworth or that's the Brewers asking price, which would on the surface appear to be a hefty return. The problem for us is that we have taken the Brewers out 2 of the last 3 years in the playoffs and were sitting on the other side waiting for them the other year had they not lost due to a Trent Grisham fumble and Josh Hader collapse. They supposedly still view themselves as contenders due to the shitty NL Central, so I would guess they are very reluctant to send one of their best players our way. We would likely have to really overpay to get him and that is just not something our FO is going to do, especially when our bullpen is looking pretty full already. I would love to see him added as he would be another great arm to the system, I just worry that the price would be almost too high at this point. Also, I think the Brewers have to be wary after their debacle of a trade a year ago with the Padres.

Kind of random, but I was thinking about our starting rotation... and Price. I don't know if other Dodger fans would share this opinion, but for me, he's the early favorite to head my shit-list if he stumbles out the gate. Everyone else earned some extra leeway based on bringing home the title (and in Bauer's case, the CYA buys some extra patience for him), but Price doesn't get that. He's knocking one of our young guys out of the rotation, and possibly off the roster. In theory, one could say that May and Gonsolin's biggest shortcoming was their failure to go deep in games, so Price improves us there. Unfortunately, that may not be the case. In 2019, he averaged only 4.88 innings/start - not even enough to qualify for a win in his average start. Maybe giving his arm a season's rest will help him return to being a workhorse, but if not, I'm going to wish the FO had unloaded him this offseason and given May or Gonsolin (or Gray later) a shot at that fifth spot and building off their 2020 success.

I'm with you. Rather see that rotation spot go to a young RHer as opposed a meh LHer who's probably a short timer with the team anyway.

guess you can look at it like that but it also takes pressure off the young guns if they are doing long relief after his 4
and of course if he sucks it shouldn't be a long leash w the talent the Dodgers have
