http://www.truebluela.com/2015/5/6/8564023/hyun-jin-ryu-setback-shoulder-dodger-rotation Whenever Ryu is able to begin any type of rehab assignment, he would likely need almost a spring training's worth of starts — say, between four and six, each one progressively longer — to build up arm strength, so you can as a rough estimate add a month to whatever start date he might have for a tentative major league return. So we are already into June, and probably mid-June at the absolute earliest for Ryu Well shit
^ and... The Dodgers‘ latest update on the shoulder of Hyun-jin Ryu is not a good one. As Zach Helfand of the Los Angeles Times reports, Ryu sat in the 82 to 83 mph range in his last bullpen session. Manager Don Mattingly says that level was below what the team was comfortable with to continue his progression, with the club preferring instead to give Ryu extra rest. Mattingly acknowledged some concern, though he indicated it is too early to tell whether Ryu will get back on his expected timetable. The Dodgers’ summer trade plans could hinge in large part on Ryu’s health. hopefully all the prospects/scrubs/fodder the nerds have stockpiled will help net us a decent sp come july [if not sooner] side note: so glad we refused to include joc in any trade discussions for hamels et al...
In my world, this is "scurrying" around for a starter, from wherever. Holy shit. I know this is a roster move (the 60 day DL thing) , but damn, the news about Ryu is not exactly fortifying as to is physical progress. Call me a cockeyed pessimist...this is a troublesome wound we have. Crazy glue is good shit, but doesn't last forever...
Well, thanks for the info...I would be pessimistic anyway, no matter what, as is my want. Like thinking about the uber fail of McCarthy (only in my pessim-brain), which to me was an ill-advised (al beit on a talented to a degree pitcher), glaringly disaster-inviting signing. And we sure fucking tempted fate, and got smacked in the mouth with it. A big bloody lip.
I get that our overall summer trade plans could hinge on Ryu's health, but healthy Ryu or not we have room/need for at least one more stud arm. So our top priority, which is clearly defined now, doesn't change.
Seriously. It's Clayton and Zack. Anderson has been okay, but we now have two spots that being taken by guys who are spot starters. Just get someone.
Got an ESPN alert on my phone saying that Ryu has elected for shoulder surgery, putting his season in doubt. Ugh.... So who're trading for at the deadline?
here it is... Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu to have surgery, may be lost for season by Mark Saxon, ESPNLosAngeles.com — 2 hours ago SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has elected to have surgery on his injured pitching shoulder, a source confirmed, casting doubt on his ability to throw for the team this season. Hyun-Jin Ryu will have shoulder surgery, but whether he misses the rest of the 2015 season is up in the air. AP Photo/Jeff Roberson The latest MRI on Ryu did not show a torn labrum or any obvious structural damage, so the operation would be aimed at discovering and cleaning up whatever is causing the inflammation that has kept him on the disabled list all season. Ryu's first attempt to return without surgery in March was aborted when he felt tightness in the shoulder during a bullpen session. News of Ryu's decision first surfaced in Korean newspapers. The Dodgers haven't announced Ryu's surgery, but Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said surgery is being discussed. Ryu was scheduled to consult with team physician Neal ElAttrache Tuesday evening. Friedman also acknowledges he is no longer thinking Ryu will be part of the team's rotation this season, "because it's more helpful to err on that side rather than err on the more positive side." "It hasn't progressed as quickly as we all hoped, and he's worked extremely hard to get back. It just isn't happening as quickly as he would like," Friedman said. "It's not a totally clear-cut, black-and-white issue. It's more involved than that. We have an excellent doctor in ElAttrache and a very good medical department ,and everyone is putting their heads together to see what makes the most sense." Ryu would be the second Dodgers starter to be lost to surgery. Brandon McCarthy had undergone Tommy John elbow reconstruction and is expected to be out until around the 2016 All-Star break. Ryu's decision could send the Dodgers into a full-scale search for a starting pitcher, though they have had surprisingly good results internally. Carlos Frias -- who will try to extend his record to 4-0 on Tuesday night in San Francisco -- and Mike Bolsinger have given the Dodgers solid spot starts. The Dodgers also have Brandon Beachy under contract for $2.75 million as he tries to work his way back from a second Tommy John surgery. Beachy is expected to go on a minor league rehab assignment soon, and his return, presuming he has no setbacks, is expected in June. Ryu is 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA in two seasons for the Dodgers.
