So then he's a me first type of guy and I don't want him. I don't really care how the Dodgers or Yankees are viewed in Japan. I want a guy who will come onto the team and put the team first not himself or countryman who came before him. I've had it with the me first types, they never cut it when it really counts.

Every week that it takes the MLB and NPB to figure out a new system, the better it is for the Dodgers, IMO. The Yankees need to fill spots three through five in their rotation, and it could prove costly to them if they "starve out" waiting for Tanaka and end up losing out on him.

That being said, I really hope we end up with Tanaka. If they adjust the posting process and allow three teams to negotiate with a player, I like our chances even better. Our history with international pitchers, money, and current roster situation makes it a no-brainer in my eyes.

What in the hell? Where did you get that he's a me type of player? The point of the thread and it's in the title, that it's about the Yankees going after him hard so I tried to make a case for us. When a player tries to choose a team they look at the pros and cons. I don't know who he would pick if the rules were changed but we will see soon enough I hope but don't assume he's selfish.

Sure like most successful folks he is operating in his own best interest within the market. Isn't that ability what differentiates and creates various gaps?

Like all foreign players they know that this is the best league in the entire world so they want to come here and prove themselves and of course to do that they have to go through posting. Just like serving their time here in the mlb so that they can become free agents which is the right of all professional athletes.

My entirely neutral bias would state...

    1) FUCK the Yankees... they don't 'need' anything. They already have too many fucking Rings for every finger and every toe so fuck them. I don't care if they 'want' pitching for spots 3-5 or whatever. Fuck Jr.'s snugger pockets. Loser. Fuck'em. And fuck the Yankees for whining about A-Roid and Jeter after signing and resigning them. They are both old news, get a life and move on. Fuck'em.
    2) Fuck the Angels... they had a chance to do good but idiot Arte let all the pitchers he had get away and thought that signing born again nutcase Hamilton would solve things. Idiot player with an idiot owner. No more good pitchers wasted on you idiots. Fuck'em.
    3) Fuck the Mariners... who gives a shit about Seattle except those poor friends of mine who endure 340+ days of rain per year. Fuck'em. They shouldn't have moved there... don't deserve good baseball... losing damn Mariners ... Fuck'em.
    4) Fuck the Rangers and anyone else who might get named as a candidate for Tanaka. Ever been to fucking Texas? god forsaken dust bowl filled with tumbleweeds goes on for forever ... and oil derricks ... fucking Texan's gouging me at the damn gas pump... not to mention the gun loving Jap hating locals... Fuck'em. Fuck'em all.

I want Tanaka to enjoy the multiethnic culture that only Los Angeles Dodgers can provide. Come to Alhambra or Garden Grove for food and South Pasadena or Brentwood to live. Enjoy a huge local Asian community. In the old days it would be the Dodgers game to lose and we'd keep the purse strings knotted so tight they'd go elsewhere. Like the fucking Yankees.

Now, with GG's $$$$$, it shouldn't play out that way.

    But especially fuck the Yankees!!

...only if you're not going to get all thin skinned and uber sensitive about it...

Doughty8, have you been to Texas? Talked to a few Texans much about those from the country of Japan and how they are viewed? I'll share from my dealings that they don't much care if you're clan is from Japan, Taiwan or China, if they didn't call you a Jap then they'd call you a Chink and they certainly wouldn't give a shit about any potential technical inaccuracies were you to claim them. It's a local mindset. All Asian's are randomly viewed as Japs. Or Chinks. Or sometimes Nips or slant eyes... but not so much with Nips. The salient, and apparently overlooked point, was "why would ANY Asian want to work in the right wing gun nut heaven of Texas?" Only a fool ...

Or are you going to go off on a politically correct rant about blacks getting upset when whites join them in calling themselves each nigga's? I personally think that the level of politically correct whining that is done on the topic of racial sensitivity is in itself abusive. No one can offend you without your permission.

I further find it hilarious that EVERY SINGLE TEAMMATE of Richie Incognito has come out in his defense and all have told Martin that he's not welcome back to the Dolphins if that is how politically correct and racially sensitive he feels. They want nothing to do with him, blacks and whites alike. No one wants to be around people that make you feel bad but no one wants to be around someone who always claims others 'make' them feel bad either.

I am not (always) racially insensitive, but I've been enough places, like TX, to know when I see it and it's PC loving sister. Fuck both sides.

Grow a thicker skin and I'll try to stop using bad words like Nip, Jap, Chink or Nigga in my stories. ... unless they fit...

Sheesshh and it's only Monday... ... :smh:

:banghead: I'm not suggesting that using those words are indicative of being racist I just personally found it to be totally unnecessary and lazy to use it. I thought we had a little modicum of class on this site but I will take your suggestion to heart and try not to be thin skinned but no promises. I think Cognito is getting a bad wrap to be clear and this country is waaaaay too politically correct and it pisses me off too but I prefer shake my head and laugh.

MLB pulls idea for new Japan system
    Decision could impact Tanaka's availability

    Associated Press | November 14, 2013, 10:48 PM ET

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Major League Baseball is withdrawing its proposal for a new bidding system with Japan, making it uncertain whether prized pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will be on the market this offseason.

MLB chief operating officer Rob Manfred said Japanese officials had not acted quickly enough on MLB's proposal for a new agreement and that a new proposal will be forwarded.

"We warned them, told them if this sat too long, there could be shifting winds out there, and suffice it to say there are shifting winds," Manfred said.

Under the so-called "posting system," agreed to in December 1998 by MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball, more than a dozen Japanese players have moved to the majors before the nine years of service time they would have needed to become free agents in their home country. Under the system, MLB clubs submit bids, and the highest bidder has 30 days to reach an agreement with the player.

Boston obtained pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka from the Seibu Lions before the 2007 season for $51,111,111 and agreed to a $52 million, six-year contract with the right-hander. Texas got pitcher Yu Darvish from the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters before the 2012 season for $51,703,411 and gave him a $56 million, six-year deal. Darvish finished second this week in American League Cy Young Award voting.

"I think the concerns with the system was it was a blind bidding process that led to inflated numbers," Manfred said, "and that those inflated numbers make that market unavailable to a broad cross-section of our teams."

MLB's proposal had called for a player's price to be determined at a figure somewhere between the No. 1 and No. 2 bids, and would have added a penalty fee of 2.5 percent of that figure if the club with the winning bid failed to sign the player, two people who attended the meeting said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

At the meeting, several officials objected to the proposal and suggested the posting fee be included in a team's payroll for the luxury tax, the sources said. Instituting such a provision would require an agreement from the Major League Baseball Players Association, whose contract runs through the 2016 season. Players would not be likely to agree to such a change.

After the discussion went on for a while, the matter ultimately was tabled.

Tanaka, a 25-year-old right-hander, went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA during the regular season for the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Without a new agreement, players from Japan's Central and Pacific Leagues would not be able to sign with MLB until they had nine years of service time.

"If that's the way we get Japanese professionals, I think that the 30 major league clubs are prepared to live with that result," Manfred said.

for some reason I highly doubt we end up with Tanaka. Yes, I would love to have him, but being realistic, Texas and NYY are in a bigger need of not only getting starting pitchers, but to show to their fans they are pushing... I dont think the Haren signing is the reason we walk away, but just that I dont thing the Dodgers were gonna be that aggressive at all...

but hey, we have the cash, so who knows!

if he's available, i think we get him
i don't see anyone outbidding us for a foreign player if we want him
and the yankees have supposedly made beltran their (next) top priority, so (if true) you can pretty much count them out on tanaka
    ck/greinke/tanaka/ryu/haren would be pretty formidable...

    perhaps
but neither will likely be ready by opening day
    haren is on a 1 year/+option so...
plus as last year showed us, a surplus of starting pitching isn't necessarily a bad thing
