Dodgers have narrowed the Coaching Search

The Los Angeles Dodgers have interviewed nine candidates for their managerial opening and are going to bring back four of them as finalists next week. The four will come from the following five candidates: Bud Black, Darrin Erstad, Gabe Kapler, Kirk Gibson and Dave Roberts. The rest of the field is no longer in contention, according to sources familiar with the search. Kapler, the Dodgers' director of player development, is still considered the front-runner by many despite his lack of managerial experience and denials from the team of that being the case.

The only candidates with major league managing experience who have been interviewed are Bud Black, Kirk Gibson, Bob Geren and Ron Roenicke. Black and Gibson would both be perfect fits for the Dodgers, but for much different reasons. Black is considered one of the best managers in the game at handling a pitching staff and winning close games. Gibson’s ties to the last Dodgers World Series championship in 1988 -- and his strong teaching skills -- would make him a solid fit for a team trying to develop so many young position players at the major league level, including Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson, Corey Seager andYasmani Grandal. The other candidates interviewed were Darin Erstad, Dave Martinez, Dave Roberts and Tim Wallach.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has the final recommendation to ownership on whom to hire for this position, but he is listening carefully to input from GM Farhan Zaidi, senior VP of baseball operations Josh Byrnes and director of baseball operations Alex Tamin, who have been an integral part of the interview process during the first round.

Friedman and Byrnes both have successful histories of hiring managers with limited major league experience. Friedman hired Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay in 2006, and Maddon has gone on to win 90 games six different times in the first 10 years of his career, highlighted by an American League pennant in 2008. Byrnes made his out-of-the box hire when he selected A.J. Hinch to manage the Diamondbacks in 2009. The decision backfired on Byrnes at the time, but that had more to do with the team Hinch was managing than his skills. He was given a second chance by the Houston Astros this past season and led them to 86 wins and a wild-card berth during his first year. Hinch is expected to finish in the top three for AL Manager of the Year. Byrnes also was part of the administration that hired Terry Francona in Boston and stayed with Bud Black in San Diego despite ownership's wanting him out.

While the Dodgers can’t ignore the opportunity to hire a former NL Manager of the Year like Black or Gibson, they seem to be leaning toward a candidate without previous major league managerial experience, such as Kapler, Erstad and Roberts. Erstad had a really strong interview.

According to my sources the four finalists will come from these five remaining candidates.

Underwhelming. I would have hired Dave Martinez but what do I know?

    Just praying it's not Gibson.

You know, for a guy that everyone thinks should be in high demand, he sure does get passed up a lot. I'm with you on Gibson, I thought he was awful in AZ.

J.P. Hoornstra says that he believes that Gibson is also out, but that is more on his conversations with others in the franchise.

Under the assumption Gibson isn't a legit candidate, I like those 4 candidates and would be cool with either of them

    Kaplar
    Roberts
    Black
    Erstad
    Gibson
Only four will get a second interview, according to the hack known as Jim Bowden

Like I said in other thread, I'm probably just being optimistic but I don't see where I could find a huge negative difference between Kapler, Roberts, Black, and Erstad. All come with their negatives, all have their positives. I like them all, generally speaking, though it's kinda hard to tell what their effect would be

    Let's do
    Black - manager
    Roberts - bench coach
    Gibson - hitting coach (meh)
Kaplar- stays doing whatever he is currently doing
    Erstad- 1st base coach

But I wouldn't put it past this front office to hire all of them.

    From jp Hoonstra:

that the Dodgers will hold second interviews with four managerial candidates from a group including Gabe Kapler, Dave Roberts, Darin Erstad, Bud Black and Kirk Gibson.

Two sources familiar with the process told me that this is not entirely accurate. One source told me that three candidates, not four, will get second interviews, and that one of the three might not be from the group of five ESPN reported. So we’ll see. The Dodgers aren’t confirming a specific number of second-interview candidates yet.

Kapler has been considered the favorite for some time now. Roberts reportedly interviewed well; ESPN reported that Erstad had a strong interview as well. Black, Roberts and Gibson all have connections to Dodgers executive Josh Byrnes from either San Diego or Arizona.

But at this point, the process is less about familiarity than it was when it began 23 days ago (as I check the headline). Farhan Zaidi told reporters at the GM meetings that the list of second interview candidates was to be finalized by the end of this week.

On another note: there was some buzz yesterday around hitting coach Mark McGwire, whose contract hasn’t been renewed by the Dodgers for 2016, as a possible candidate for the same job in Arizona. McGwire lives in Southern California and has two school-age sons. It’s not clear how much that will influence where he works next year.
