McGwire unlikely to become D’bags hitting coach
by Eric Schaal | Cheat Sheet — 2 hours ago

During a press conference to discuss parting with Don Mattingly as manager, Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirmed coaches’ contracts expired at season’s end.

Friedman didn’t rule out any of the staff returning under the new manager in 2016, but also said they were free to seek employment with other clubs.

Thus far, only Davey Lopes has officially moved on, joining Dusty Baker’s Washington Nationals staff as first base coach.

Tim Wallach is expected to join Mattingly as the Miami Marlins’ bench coach, while Rick Honeycutt is likely to return with the Dodgers.

After it was reported one week ago hitting coach Mark McGwire was a candidate to join the Arizona Diamondbacks, that no longer appears to be the case, per Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports:

The #Dbacks still searching for hitting coach as top candidates
Mark McGwire and David Justice each opting to spend more
    time at home.

Last season was McGwire’s third with the Dodgers, all of which have been as the club’s hitting coach. A a team the Dodgers hit .250/.326/.413 in 2015, with their batting average ranking 19th overall, on-base percentage fourth, and slugging percentage 10th.

They hit 187 home runs, which led the National League and was good for sixth in the Majors. Under McGwire in 2014, the Dodgers led the Majors with a .333 team on-base percentage and .286 batting average with runners in scoring position.

The Dodgers’ .322 wOBA last season led the NL and was fifth-best overall, and their 106 wRC+ trailed only the Toronto Blue Jays (117 wRC+) and San Francisco Giants (107 wRC+).

Moreover, Los Angeles led the Majors with a 9.2 percent walk rate and were 15th with a 20.7 percent strikeout rate.

Prior to joining the Dodgers, McGwire spent three seasons as hitting coach with the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire’s hiring in Los Angeles coincided with the Dodgers also adding John Valentin to the organization as assistant hitting coach.

There’s yet to be any public indication as to which way the Dodgers may be leaning as it relates to a decision on whether or not to retain McGwire.

Roenicke joining Angels as Third Base Coach
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 18 minutes ago

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced on Wednesday the hiring of Ron Roenicke as third base coach.

In corresponding moves, Gary DiSarcina moves from third base to first base coach, while Alfredo Griffin was named infield coach.

Roenicke becomes the second coach from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2015 staff who will not return with the club next season. He was fired May 4 as manager by the Milwaukee Brewers, who at the time had a league-worst 7-18 record.

Roenicke joined the Dodgers in August, replacing third base coach Lorenzo Bundy. With Roenicke’s addition, Bundy transitioned to a role as outfield coordinator for the Dodgers.

Following Don Mattingly’s split from the Dodgers, Davey Lopes was the first coach to depart — agreeing to become first base coach for Dusty Baker’s Washington Nationals staff two days after Baker was named manager.

With the Dodgers’ managerial search appearing to be in the final stages, coaching staff hires are likely to follow in the coming weeks.

Team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman stated on Oct. 22 the contracts of coaches on the 2015 staff expired once the season concluded.

Friedman left open the possibility for coaches to return next season, but added decisions on the staff would not be made prior to getting a new manager in place.

Given that he is unlikely to be hired as the Dodgers’ next manager, Tim Wallach is expected to reunite with Mattingly as the Miami Marlins’ bench coach.

For Roenicke it’s a return to the organization he was with from 2000-10 under manager Mike Scioscia. He joined the Angels as third base coach, then moved to bench coach in 2006 to replace Joe Maddon, who left for the managerial position with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Like Maddon, Roenicke departed the Angels staff in favor of a manager’s position (Brewers). Roenicke was among the initial candidates the Dodgers considered and interviewed as part of their search for Mattingly’s replacement.

Mark McGwire may be a candidate to also join the Angels, who are currently without a hitting coach after not renewing the contract of Don Baylor in October. McGwire was linked to the same position Arizona Diamondbacks, but is said to favor remaining close to his Orange County home.

Honestly, I was hoping common sense would prevail and Black would be the choice.

    I know, racist.

Yeah I was confused about that also because LakersNation said they weren't in any way associated with DodgersNation anymore.

So we now know our next manager will have basically zero managerial experience.

And I'm assuming Wallach is gone. ?

So does this make our bench coach a big priority this offseason as well?

Makes sense that Tim stays and helps the newbie whomever it is. Heard that we will know by the weekend, Kapler or Roberts. Wonder if Kap quits if he doesn't get the gig.

    • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that a decision has been delayed until Sunday or Monday, as some members of the Dodgers’ ownership group are traveling.

Is Ron Roenicke not at 3b anymore a good thing though? I can't think of anything negative that I read about him...seemed pretty damn good.

Mark McGwire is in discussions to become the Padres bench coach, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He was the Dodgers hitting coach the last three seasons.
