a couple of pitching coach prospects just became available if honeycutt decides to follow dbb to miami...

Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux out after 7 seasons
    Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Pitching coach Mike Maddux will not return to the American League West champion Texas Rangers next season.

The Rangers announced Thursday that they were parting ways with Maddux after seven seasons. He had been among six coaches invited to return and was previously offered a new contract that he had not signed.

General manager Jon Daniels said he and manager Jeff Banister met with Maddux "to inform him we had decided to go in another direction." The pitching coach's brother, Hall of Fame pitcher and four-time NL Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux, is also leaving after serving four years as special assistant to Daniels.

Mike Maddux was interested in returning to the Rangers but also wanted to look at other opportunities. There are several pitching coach vacancies in the major leagues.

With Maddux out, the Rangers are now searching for three new assistants. Bullpen coach Andy Hawkins resigned and hitting coach Dave Magadan left in hopes of finding a job closer to his home in Florida.

Mike Maddux joined the Rangers after the 2008 season, when former team president Nolan Ryan brought him in from the Milwaukee Brewers, where Maddux was pitching coach from 2003 to 2008.

Texas had a 612-523 record with a 4.06 ERA with Maddux as the pitching coach. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels were the only American League teams with more wins during that time, and the Rangers reached the playoffs four times in that span, including their only two World Series appearances.

Mike Maddux had agreed to a one-year contract extension after last season before Banister was named manager. That contract went through this week.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...I don't get it either. The guy is one of the best there is, and to get rid of him for the sake of change is pure fucking stupidity. Maybe he doesn't fit the sleek profile all Dodger brass must reflect now...IDK. He had the team at or near the top with 3/5 of the SR a huge question mark much of the times.
Getting rid of a totally successful coach like him could be a huge bite on the ass for the FO...which they might like, actually.

If they would hurry up and just hire Kapler already (like we all know they will), maybe they could retain the key members of the staff.

    uh, what?

Dodgers to interview Erstad for managerial position
by Anthony Irwin | Dodgers Nation — 10 minutes ago

Finally! Some “news” about how process going into hiring a manager! (Kind of).

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX’s MLB coverage, one name has leaked regarding who all will be interviewed to be the Los Angeles Dodgers’ next manager.

    Ken Rosenthal ✔ @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: #Dodgers plan to interview Darin Erstad, University of Nebraska
head coach (and former #Angels OFer) for their managerial opening.
    12:54 PM - 30 Oct 2015

Southern California fans will remember Erstad as the extremely hard-working centerfielder who won a World Series with the Angels. Erstad was something of a fan-favorite as an Angel because of said work ethic, a characteristic one would imagine he would carry over to a managerial role.

For fans, this marks the first taste of the extensive process Andrew Friedman, Farhan Zaidi and the rest of the Dodgers are embarking on in finding the right guy for the job. It isn’t much, but at least it’s something for a fan base who have been fairly visibly frustrated at the ambiguity thus far and potential candidates getting hired elsewhere.

    and from true blue la...

Dodgers to interview Erstad for manager position
by Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — 40 minutes ago

The Dodgers managerial search got a little more interesting, with the club planning to interview former Angels All-Star a Darin Erstad for the vacant position, per Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Erstad, 41, last played in 2009, and has been managing the baseball team at the University of Nebraska, his alma mater, for the last four seasons. The Huskers have gone 139-97 (.589) in Erstad's four years at the helm, following three years of 82-80 (.506).

Nebraska made one NCAA Tournament appearance under Erstad, the 2014 Super Regional, its first such appearance since 2008.

Erstad played 11 of his 14 major league seasons with the Angels, also playing for the White Sox and Astros, hitting .282/.336/.407, a 93 OPS+, with 316 doubles and 124 home runs. He made two All-Star teams, peaking in 2000 with a 240-hit, .355/.409/.541 campaign with 39 doubles and 25 home runs.

He also won three Gold Glove Awards, two in center field and one at first base, the only player to win honors at both first base and in the outfield. Erstad's versatility didn't end there; he was also a punter while at Nebraksa, a starter on the Huskers' 1994 national championship team.

As a player, Erstad was lauded for his leadership abilities, so his foray into managing is no surprise.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said this of Erstad when he was hired at Nebraska in 2011:

"Darin is going to be an incredible mentor, teacher and leader. His understanding and passion for the game will resonate with his players at the University of Nebraska. Darin will instill competitiveness in the program like no one else."

Scioscia said much of the same back in 2002, per USA Today:

"He does it by example," Angels manager Mike Scioscia says. "He goes out there every day, and you know that Ersty is going to be in every play. His head's going to be in every play, and he's got one thing on his mind when he's on the field, and that's to help the team win."

Peter Gammons at ESPN added this in August 2002:

"Darin Erstad," says manager Mike Scioscia, "isn't like anyone I've ever known."

Ross Newhan of the Los Angeles Times wrote about Erstad's leadership in March 2002:

"Whatever tag people put on you is fine," Erstad said. "I don't sit there and say I'm the leader, but I'm not afraid to say anything. If something needs to be said, I'm not going to keep my mouth shut. You can't force it because you have to be yourself, but you do what you do and hope it's right."

Too many Angel seasons have dissolved in lethargy and apathy. Scioscia has the respect of the clubhouse, but Erstad believes there's need for leadership among the players.

"You have to police each other," he said. "You need everybody to keep check on everybody else. You need to take care of your own business, but nobody's perfect. Everybody needs a kick in the butt from time to time. The nice thing about our team is that not just one guy does that. We pick each other up from top to bottom. I mean, with guys like Garret and myself it's just a natural progression. You keep your mouth shut and go play when you're younger. The longer you play, the more you see and the more comfortable you are speaking your mind."

In October 2002, Mike DiGiovanna of the Times had more to say about Erstad's leadership:

"Darin Erstad is the real leader of this club," [David] Eckstein said. "He shows us how the game should be played. We look to him."

"From my first day in the organization, when I stepped in, you could tell Darin was the guy everyone looked up to here," Eckstein said. "He gives up his body on defense. He makes things happen on offense. If the pitcher is tough, he finds a way to get on base and create havoc, as he proved again tonight."

I wouldn't put much stock in his record. Not a great place to recruit for baseball. God awful winters cause for you not being able to get outside from November until March, your location causes your recruiting area to be mostly to the south thanks to the states to your north not having HS baseball in most parts, you're recruiting in a state where every kid is raised to play football among many other negative qualities. I started my college career in Nebraska thanks to a forceful hand from my parents, it remains the worst place I have ever been/lived and no worthy D1 talent would go there unless they were bred to love Big Red... or like me have 100+ other offers but your folks require you to take an offer from a school close to home.
