It does look like a metallic version of Dave, by krikey...
New schedule for playoffs:
first round starts September 30th, 3 games straight at home stadium
DS and CS would be in Texas and there’s no days off throughout the series. So 5 and then 7 straight games. Gonna be way different, gonna test pitching depth and stamina of hitters
No off days is a huge deal. We are now talking about a 5-man rotation: Kershaw, Buehler, May, Gonsolin, Urias - and that's IF everyone is healthy. I guess everyone will have to deal with the same thing, so it's not necessarily the end-all for us. There will be a huge advantage for the teams that can finish off their series quickly.
There will be 2 scheduled off-days during the WS.
Manfred also said he hopes fans will be able to attend the LCS's and WS, which sounds like a joke but it's not.
i've gotten email asking if i want a call for limited access tickets
i do think it’s an advantage for us, but I still don’t like it. Our #2 might not be better than others but I’d take our 4-5 over many teams. And what our bullpen lacks in elite 7-9 inning reliever, it makes up in having many good (not great) relievers. Years past we’ve gotten burnt by teams who get by with basically 2 starters and 2 relievers, and now those teams can’t do that anymore, whereas our “strength” is in being able to have multiple good arms
I'm just worried about injury with this starting rotation. If someone goes down you are looking at a Wood/White/Bullpen start, which is probably still as good as most team's #5 starter, but still worrisome. I think some teams will be in position to push their stud pitchers on short rest, which I don't think will be an option for us with no one stretched out. But you're probably right that this actually plays to our strength.
It is weird to see such a big strategical change to the playoffs announced so late in the season.
Oh yeah worrying about injury is valid, although they could turn it into a bullpen game or even a minor league stud but same could be said for every team. Everyone’s scared of the Padres and their #4 and #5 are Paddack and Richards (who both aren’t good) and one injury away from who knows
Does anyone know, is Josiah Gray, or other alt-training site players, available for the postseason if they are not on the 40-man roster?
yes I believe as long as within the org. Teams have until September 20th to submit roster of 28 active and 12 “taxi squad” for playoffs
Rob Manfred says "an overwhelming majority" of owners endorse a 16-team playoff format in the long-term.
Asswipe wants to turn the grand old game into the NBA or NHL where everyone makes the playoffs.
Midnight last night was the cut off, but I would assume that the loophole for injured players still exists.
I'm sure all the cheap teams love it, like the Pirates, Rays, Royals, Marlins, Orioles, A's, and Indians. The teams who spend money but are still ass, and don't know why, probably also love it like the Rockies, Angels, and Astros.
There have not been many reports out of Alt-Sites, but the things I have heard is that Gray's velo was up and he was looking good. The opinion at the time though was that he was still not ready for an MLB rotation spot. Kind of disappointing as most pre-season projections had him making his debut this year. He has been working on refining his secondaries and his change was still very much a work in progress, but he was showing a better feel for the pitch.
The team recalled McKinstry today, the assumption is that Ferguson to IL... which, not great, Bob. Also tells you how the team feels about our lefty bats at present.
And Fuck... May is no longer starting today
Hes still pitching, think they’re auditioning some sort of bullpen game in case they wanna do that for playoffs with the weird format
Yeah, got worried there for a bit, but it makes sense since they did that with Gonsolin too. Wonder if they are gonna do the BP day thing with both coming out of the pen instead since they have experience and success as relievers. He is absolutely going to be needed as a starter if we get to the second round.
