I am REALLY starting to hate how Roberts takes the Phil Jackson approach of letting some guys work through their funks. He leaves some relievers out there just to die and very often it is in big situations. Coleman had no business being in there in that situation, but alas, there he was. Then there is Maeda who will be rolling along and it will be the 3rd time through the order and OUT he comes. That is a guy that needs to start working in that situation when the club is doing well as he can't simply be a 5+ inning guy going forward. He needs to figure out what does and doesn't work so the team can hopefully capitalize. Roberts needs to pick his spots better
Wasn't confident in Coleman, either. But he had just K'ed the hottest hitter in their lineup (Segura). No problem with Coleman facing him after that. I'm with you on Maeda, but his numbers the third time through the lineup are horrible.
Oh I agree that they are bad, but I think there is a reason for that. A lot of the times where he is scuffling, he'll face the order a third time through to try to get another inning before the bullpen and those games, yeah he's gonna get knocked around. The games that he is rolling however, Roberts will get him through the 6th (on 2 very rare occasions the 7th) and then go to the pen when he is at the 80-90 pitch mark. Now I am not saying I want to see this in every game, but I would like him to go out and work these situations a little more often so that maybe the club can figure out what works better for him later on so that they can potentially start squeezing 1-2 more innings a start out of the guy next season.
