There's a good chance he won't be a catcher in the near future. Dude has had a lot of concussions from foul tips and they've hinted that he might need to leave that position early

Lowrie's supposedly looking for multiple years..Dodgers could probably find a stop gap. Rollins won't accept a deal to the Mets..maybe he will for the Dodgers? and of course they've looked into Alexei who'd also be good enough in a 1yr spot.

yea, i wouldn't touch Avila. his old man is in their front office..if he's willing to help move Avila, Avila's state must be extra-fragile.

what about that makes him untradable? if he elects to be a free agent, it means he performed pretty well..and then you should sign him back.

    word.

Because it basically means teams are trading for 1 year of him, it basically gives him no value, because if he plays well, he's going to opt out and if he doesn't play well and opts in, you don't want him anyways.

Depending on who they're trying to get. If they're good, you don't want to lose a good player for an untested rookie who can opt out after being traded to you.

again..Guerrero's already being paid pretty well. if he elects free agency then it means he put together a pretty good year. and if he performed well and wants to test the waters..re-sign him. at some point the Padres are going to have to spend a dime. they're looking for offensive punch..it's not free.

as good as Cashner can be when he's healthy..there is an assumed risk with that buy. multiple issues with that guy's shoulder, neck, etc. it'd be a good risk to take for both teams, imo, but i could understand if the Pads wanted a more proven bat.

Correct, but the Padres don't have to trade for him if they don't feel he's a need. They're in constant rebuilding mode. Guerrero can go to any other team that can offer him more than the Pads. They may not think it's worth it by losing Cashner.

And then there's the possibility Guerrero can't hit a lick in PetCo, and they lost a good starter for another guy who can't play well in PetCo.

Dodgers sign Frank Sanchez, Edwin Reyes, Jerson Dometilia
    By Eric Stephen @ericstephen on Nov 12 2014, 11:50a 323

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers announced the signing of three international amateurs on Wednesday, a trio of 16-year-olds including Juan Uribe's nephew.

Frank Sanchez is a shortstop from San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, and is the nephew of the Dodgers' third baseman. Sanchez was signed by Dodgers scouts Bob Engle, Patrick Guerrero and Franklin Taveras.

Edwin Reyes is another Dominican shortstop, out of Azua, signed by Taveras.

Jerson Dometilia is listed by the Dodgers as a catcher/infielder from Willemstad, Curacao, the same hometown as closer Kenley Jansen. Dometilia was signed by scouts Rolando Chirino and Guerrero.

The 2014-2015 international signing period runs from July 2 to June 15. The bonuses for these three are unknown, but here are the known international amateurs signed by the Dodgers to date.

well, scratch miller off our list...

    Andrew Miller Seeking Four-Year Deal
By Steve Adams [November 12, 2014 at 5:06pm CST]

Earlier today, reports indicated that David Robertson is seeking a four-year deal in the mold of Jonathan Papelbon‘s $50MM contract, and the asking price on top lefty reliever Andrew Miller might not be much lower. Jason Mastrodonato of MassLive.com hears from a source that Miller is seeking “at least” a four-year deal and isn’t listening to any offers that have anything less than an “astounding” average annual value.

The Red Sox met with Miller’s camp this afternoon, Mastrodonato hears. Miller’s agent, Mark Rodgers of Frontline Athlete Management, told the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo that he saved his meeting with the Red Sox for last at this year’s GM Meetings (Twitter link).

Miller is coming off an elite season in which he posted a combined 2.02 with an incredible 103 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings (14.9 K/9) between the Red Sox and Orioles. He dominated right- and left-handed hitters alike, averaging just 2.5 walks per nine innings with a ground-ball rate of 46.9 percent. That 14.9 K/9 mark is the highest in AL history for a reliever with more than 50 innings, as pointed out yesterday by ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, who also reported that Miller is drawing interest as a potential closer.

Of course, Miller doesn’t come with a lengthy track record of this type of dominance. He posted excellent ERAs in 2012-13, but in shorter samples (a total of 70 1/3 innings in that time) and while being shielded from facing many right-handed hitters. Miller also battled his command until this season, as he entered the year with a career BB/9 rate of 5.3.

All of this as covered in greater detail in Tim Dierkes’ Free Agent Profile of Miller. Though his track record is a bit spotty, Tim projected that Miller’s historic season would be parlayed into a four-year, $32MM pact.

and with vmart getting a 4yr/$68MM deal, you can probably cross russ off as well

was thinking that kinda set the bar, since some were apprehensive about teams offering long multi-year deals
especially for russ, in an especially thin catcher market
but i could be wrong :retard:

Tigers likely gave him a sweetheart deal because he's a hell of a hitter and for team chemistry reasons. i know Miggy wouldn't be happy if they lost him. there really was just no way that they couldn't bring VMart back, so just hand over the doe and move on to the bullpen. no need to play hardball with VMart. avoid the drawn out bidding war and show him the " quan ". losing VMart to Seattle would've probably resulted in DET missing the playoffs next year.

    a) V-Mart is a much better hitter than Russ
    b) V-Mart is not a catcher so there is no bar set
