Hey I just came to this thread because I read that AJ Ellis is retiring.

    If that still makes News

    AJ Ellis is retiring
    [IMG]

This morning I was sitting in Southbrook Church in suburban Milwaukee. The speaker was AJ Ellis, longtime Dodger and most recently a Padre. Very impressive and humble guy. He lives in Franklin WI in the offseason and this is his home church. He was entertaining and inspiring. Also told the story of his 3rd child being born in the front seat of the car as he speeds down I-43 still 15 min from the hospital. He said that he got a phone call 6 weeks ago from a team that would be "very easy logistically"! (Since I know it was not the Dodgers, I hoped it was the Brewers. I asked him afterward and he said it was the Cardinals.) But the call "gave [him] no joy". After talking to his wife, he has decided to retire. Good luck in retirement, AJ! I hope to see you coaching very soon!

I'm looking forward for the first dodgers team in years with a legit leadoff hitter. Maybe we can manufacture a run or two when home runs run dry.

Sometimes u don't need massive upgrades but small ones in key spots.

Like how the Lakers might decide to get players who can make free throws.

I expect this week to be crazy. The dominoes have got to start falling and it sounds like a lot of decisions could be close to being made. Not to mention, players are starting to get really pissed at the pace of this shit. It sounds like we should know what the plans are for the Marlins and Realmuto here fairly quickly. All that news on Friday was to me a sign that they are wanting to get this shit solved and they were basically telling the Dodgers "PLEASE up your offer!" If they do end up trading him to the Padres for a Mejia led package, all you can do is sit back and laugh as the Pads are doing some stupid shit again.

Another thing to think about, Friedman said after the Pollock deal that the club is looking forward to having 3 elite defenders in the OF. That by all accounts would be Verdugo(++ Arm), Belli(++Arm for LF and ++ athleticism for the position) and Pollock (generally regarded as one of the better defensive CF's in the game). So with Taylor, Hernandez, Toles and Pederson still existing and a strong chance that none of those first 3 will be platooned, I could see Pederson gone before camp starts. It will be interesting to see how he is valued in trade talks and how the FO goes about things the next couple of weeks.

I'm guessing that Harper/Boras are not so stupid as to permit that scenario any breath

Why would Harper want to go to San Diego to die when he's only 26?

Good lord... You are not allowed to publicly comment on free agents and players on other teams. There are reasons to be upset right now, but a guy making a joke over a question that he can't answer should not be one of them.

    • The Dodgers are said to not be out on Bryce Harper just yet, even though people are reporting the contrary on pure assumption after the Pollock deal. Word is that Boras is still asking for a contract that NOBODY is close to being in on. The Dodgers are reportedly more willing to go to a 10 year contract for Harper than once thought, but the AAV Boras is looking for would need to come down(potentially significantly). It has been no secret that the Dodgers wanted a shorter term deal for Harper, but now it sounds like they would be willing to go longer if they can work something out that may have a higher yearly salary up front with opt-outs and reduced salary later(Think the Pollock deal, but stretched a bit further). The Dodgers jumping back in stronger on Realmuto is one indication that this could be the case as Verdugo has reportedly been of interest in those talks.
    • Kenley Jansen has reportedly lost 25 pounds this offseason. He said it was for his well documented health reasons, not due to a bit of a slide in his stuff. He will be ready for to come to Colorado the next time the team does, he just needs to hydrate which has be perceived as a cause of his problems.
    • People around the game think it is a real stretch to see the Padres land either Harper or Machado. Not only does the club already have a lot of payroll tied into two "meh" players, but their pitching is still a year or two away from being MLB ready. This gives the team an incredibly small window before having to pay players and this is not lost on the agents. Most expectations are that the Pads interest has become public as the agents want this shit to get going though it still sounds like from reports this morning that the big two are not exactly close to signing as the Friday report apparently didn't move the needle for offers.
    • The Astros are said to be circling back around on Dallas Keuchel. He apparently has not gotten a lot of interest and the Stros have not had a great offseason in relation to news about their starting pitching. It sounds like the teams with interest have been of the lower tier variety, which is understandable as Keuchel has been trending in the wrong direction.
    • Just now out of Miami and Craig Mish: "Update : Padres making a late charge for Realmuto. Braves & Marlins staring each other down hoping the other blinks. LA & CIN remain very in. The final chapter of the saga is upon us."

Im still not convinced that any 10 year deal will work out for any team, but if MGT manages to get Harper and Realmuto.......damn that would be a wicked team!!!

IMO, if the guy insists on a long-term deal and you're a club like the Dodgers or Yankees, then give him a 13 year deal. I put one together earlier in the offseason where it came out to I believe 335M over 13 yrs(25.75M AAV). That would be $10M more than Stanton got. Front load the shit out of the thing, have opt-outs and bonuses galore, but have that contract shrink from $45M a year down to $10M by the end with a huge insurance policy. It is a safety net for him if things don't work out, it's the largest contract ever given to a player and plenty of incentive for him to work hard and opt out for more money elsewhere. I feel something like that should be in the picture, but who knows whether Boras will get off his AAV high horse. They just did this with Pollock by tacking on extra cheap years ahead of an opt-out, I could see them now trying that with Harper as well.

Also... yeah that lineup would be incredibly scary.
    Pollock
    Seager
    Turner
    Harper
    Realmuto
    Bellinger
    Muncy
    Taylor/Hernandez

Not counting my chickens before they hatch as the club is more likely to come away with neither Realmuto or Harper, but that would be a lot of fun to watch. Probably also would mean that Rich Hill and Joc are gone.

Hey fuck it, why not? That team would be stacked and have addressed the real problem of why we lost in 2017 and 2018

Heyman is reporting that the Reds and Marlins are making progress towards a deal for Realmuto. This makes like no sense....

If they get any of the 3 pieces from the Reds that he mentioned, you tip your cap, can't match those guys.
