This is kind of where I'm at as well. I have a buddy that I hang out with and he went on a long drunken route of how we should model ourselves after the Cubs or the Royals.

It became a long argument, and I just wanted to see what others thought. Glad I'm not the only one.

Idk, seems like the "country should model itself after Europe" thing I hear and read often. Bad example, imo.
Also seems like we should have our own template, as willing to sign this type of player, not willing to sign that type, varies so much from team to team, there's only a faint hint of actually "modelling" after one team or another, in reality. Money certainly seemed like no object to the Dodgers, but it turned out it certainly was...some teams that spent huge bucks, failed...others that did the same, won everything.
It's more like recognizing just who you need to win, and the willingness to go out and get them, whatever they cost if within the ealm of fiduciary reality.
If availability of quality players is such a variable from one season to the next, it seems to follow the when they are available, they absolutely need to be signed. As trades are often stymied by one factor or contingency or another, and often just peter out...never come to fruition.
If not acquired when needed, key players that go somewhere else, can set a team back years.
    Just my tuppence.

Ugh. That's like choosing which garden tool you'd like to be anally raped with. (pardon the preposition)

Tell him he'll be a reliever for two years and pray he opts out

Reliever at his salary. He couldn't get an innings worth of pitches off during his rehab assignment.

I just hope to opts out. He just looks spent.

But his agent will probably advise him to stay.

Kershaw and Maeda are the only true locks right now, but then you could argue Wood, Urias, McCarthy and even De Leon/Stewart could be ahead of him in the rotation. I would not be shocked if they said that to him to coax him into opting out. All I know is that I will be checking twitter religiously over the next 24 or so hours.

Holland is already drawing interest from the Giants. Would like to see us make a play for him. He was great before the elbow issues and seems to be a worthwhile high upside risk.

I think this was missed on here, but the Dodgers are already getting interest for Carlos Ruiz and the club is FINALLY looking to use Austin Barnes in the backup role. The Angels made a trade yesterday for Maybin, I would think that Ruiz would be another relatively cheap, but good player they could slot in and address other issues.

Unfortunately, that's against the CBA, exceptions being cases where a guy will waive his NTC for the agreement of no QO (see Manny, 2008), obviously that specific instance no longer applies, as players traded in their final year can't get QO's, but an example is Jon Lucroy could have made the Indians (had he wanted to go there) waive their right to give him a QO.

    wow
    did not expect this
of course saying you want to re-sign and actually doing it...
    still, somewhat encouraging regardless

Rich Hill “absolutely” wants to re-sign with Dodgers
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

With the Los Angeles Dodgers in need of a starting pitcher, they acquired Rich Hill as part of a five-player trade with the Oakland Athletics prior to the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline. On Wednesday, Hill was one of nine Dodgers to reach free agency.

Hill’s debut with the Dodgers was delayed on three separates instances, because of lingering blister issues. He took the mound Aug. 24 against the San Francisco Giants and proved to be well worth the wait.

In his first start in over one month, the veteran left-hander spun six shutout innings against the Dodgers’ archrival.

Hill went 3-2 with a 1.83 ERA in six regular-season starts after the trade. He recently expressed an interest to re-sign with the Dodgers, via SportsNet LA:

“Absolutely … With the leadership that’s here — Clayton being the best pitcher in baseball. … It’s something that you want to be around.”

Hill struggled a bit in the Division Series, but rebounded with a strong showing against the Chicago Cubs in the NL Championship Seres. He held the eventual World Series champions to just two hits and had six strikeouts in six innings in Game 3, helping propel the Dodgers to a 2-1 series lead.

Well aware of the forthcoming market that’s short on premier starting pitchers, the Dodgers reportedly had an interest in re-signing Hill to a multiyear contract prior to free agency beginning.

Although the process is now in motion, the Dodgers do have until Monday to exclusively negotiate with Hill and their other free agents.

I think you have to roll the dice and sign him. He won't be cheap but there's very little out there and he could be our number 2. DeLeon, Maeda, Urias could fill out the regular rotation. This solves a lot of our SP issues.

I think Urias is a lock. Maybe not at the start, but by May 1

I would love to see him re-signed, but they can't go into the season with him as the #2. I'd still like for them to explore the trade market and see if they can't land another piece to slot in behind Kershaw that has a good bit more durability. Hill 3, Wood 4, Maeda 5 at the start of the season wouldn't be bad. I know I keep leaving off Urias, but I can see him missing the first month of the season due to them wanting to keep his innings in check.

I want him but I want someone else ahead of him. I'd be thrilled with him as the 3.

I guess though he can be the 2 in April and you can find someone at the deadline for the playoff push.

    a) sign him. We NEED SP talent badly.
    b) the kids are good but this does NOT solve our SP issues... are both Urias and Deleon ready for prime time for a full season? I think not.
    c) I like Wood but can't see him as so reliable yet

    VRP has it nailed
