WOW, JD Martinez is NOT opting out of his deal. It was believed that his market may not be too steep, but the assumption was that he still at least had couple interested teams. There was speculation that if he stuck around, it could mean the end of Mookie in Boston. Will be interesting to see how this plays out

I'd pay a Patreon/subscription fee for a CKWIG Dodger blog.

    @JeffPassan
BREAKING: J.D. Martinez will not opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, sources tell ESPN. By remaining with the Red Sox, Martinez can earn $62.5M over the next three years. He also has an opt-out clause after the 2020 season.

    Bye, bye Mookie?

If we cannot get Betts or Rendon, fine.
But you gotta go get Cole and find some other way to purge ourselves of offensive players who choke in the post.
    Any ideas?

Honestly, I don’t care that much about Betts. I feel like the asking price will start with Verdugo, and Verdugo is one of the guys I want to see in a postseason spot. Lindor, Rendon, and Stras is probably asking too much, but that’s what I’d like to see.

I feel like the Nats already offered him more than we'd be willing to pay. And they just won it all.

until this FO shows they're serious about winning they can fuck off
why pretend to dream about signing marquee players when there's 0% chance of it happening

Fantasizing about the impossible (Winning a WS, signing a marquee player) seems to be the only thing that keeps us on the hook.

    Reality is cruel.

Would trade the hell out of Verdugo so fast for Betts. Appreciate the skillset, but the kid hasn't ever done anything beyond July and is dealing with a back injury mighty early in his career. Give me the known, reliable commodity

If the Dodgers signed him, he'd pull a Jim Eisenrich and I'm not referring to his Tourette's.

Betts will make $30 mil this season and then be a free agent who can command $30 mil per after that. I’d rather have Verdugo + the financial ability to sign Cole or Strasburg.

They have the financial flexibility to add a few big ticket items. You know that. That's why you said you'd like to see Rendon, Lindor and Stras join.

Value probably isn't even where it needs to be in order to catch Boston's attention at all. Not when he didn't have much value last offseason followed by the back issues that cut this season short. Would likely have to be accompanied by a few other kids of note.

Even with his team control dwindling, have to imagine the offers for Betts would be pretty strong with enough teams interested in bidding and signing him, so maybe toss Seager to a 3rd team to come up with a portion of the value they're looking for in return. Be aggressive in that way and just get the damn deal done for a championship level/MVP caliber guy

Yes, and I’d rather have Rendon, Lindor, Verdugo and Stras than Rendon, Lindor, and Betts.

I like the high contact hitting and energy Verdugo brings, and of all the players on our current roster, he’s one of the few guys I could see being a difference maker in October. That’s all I’m saying.

Still don't understand why you think Boston wants Verdugo. Would they need to replace Betts? Sure, but that doesn't mean they want a kid that had little value last offseason and is now dealing with back issues. Seager could net the Sox a more reliable replacement for Betts.

It was an assumption. If it’s wrong I’m in ion Betts. Hell, if it’s Betts or nothing, I’d take Betts over Verdugo.

An OF of Bellinger, Betts, Berdugo? Love it, and won’t complain.

I’d rather have pitching first tho.

I mean, of course, we're just spit-balling, so it's cool. But agreed, that's the OF alignment I see in that scenario. If they're gonna add all this money to the payroll, the likely guy to go is Seager w/his contract year around the corner. Could assume that Joc would be out as well because he has to be paid. I feel like some team out there would be willing to take both Seager and Joc and fork over a cheaper/reliable option to Boston.

We know that even if they deal Betts, Boston is still in the business of competing for a title because that market just demands it. The top 2 guys on Seattle's farm - both outfielders. Neither is ready to go @ the big league level next season, but they're both ranked Top 25 specs in all of MiLB by a couple services. The top guy would have a chance to land after next season, but Seattle also has Domingo Santana on the cheap and may be willing to ship him along with one of those kids to get their hands on Seager and Joc.

Something like: top OF spec Kelenic + Domingo Santana + Gonsolin + E. Rios + Chris Taylor to Boston..Betts to LAD..Seager + Joc + Pollock to Seattle. It's an aggressive offer from LAD on it's face because LAD is sending out 6 guys + they have to pay Betts, but Betts is also the best player in this thing by a solid margin and even though his team control is dwindling, again, both Seager and Joc have to be paid as well. Seattle has plenty of flexibility to keep both and they're probably losing K. Broxton, so they'd have a couple OF spots open for Joc/Pollock, but yeah, it comes at a cost for them. As now, the only team in MLB to never make it to a WS, Seattle should be willing to play ball and take a shot. Dustin Pedroia's not sure if he'll ever play again and Holt is heading for free agency, so Boston should be interested in Taylor who's under control until 2022. And they get a nice haul to go with Taylor - which is sort of what you expect with other teams bidding for the versatile Betts. And at the end of the day, LAD gets this done for MVP caliber Betts without giving up any of their top specs that are close to graduating, so can we really ask for anything better than that? Hell, they'd have enough ammo left to make a run at Lindor if they wanted to. And ultimately, Verdugo stays put. Voila. Maybe LAD asks for a young relief option in addition to Betts, but that's really not even necessary.
