    You mean nachos.
    Nobody eats nachos in mexico.
    Or chips and salsa.
We eat salsa with fresh tortillas.
Burritos are Mexican from the time of the revolution.
You cant get more mexican than Pancho Villas.
And be it truth or myth its a good story.
How his raiders on horseback wanted some fast food and there was no In N Out yet.
So he said to the ladies on the comales... viejas we need some take out, where the drive through window at.
And wrap our tacos with one of those big fancy white tortillas so we dont spill the beans as we ride out.
I hate when that happens. We cant leave a trail for the city slicking communists to find us.
And that is how take out, drive through, and the burrito was born.

BTW, white tortilla is the same as wheat tortilla.
    Wheat = White
Wheat was not called wheat back in the day. And it wasnt yellow/tan but brown/dark.
But through genetic modification in farming by the northern peoples tares where introduced into the buckwheat.
    Tares are the light chaff/husk/straw.
Tares look a lot like Wheat when young and green.
But as the colors (character/face) grows up it becomes white or dark.
The more wheat is made white the less vitamins and minerals it has, and the more it causes digestion issues and gluten imbalances.
We are at this point not able to readily digest a lot of the wheat. That is why bread makes us fat. The body takes a lot of the wheat and treats is as a non food and sends it into storage/prison as fat.
And when we go on a hard diet (hell week) where we burn past our intake of carbs and burn the fat we release the wheat toxins stored in our fat. When these toxic prisoners break free they run through the rivers of blood (traffic of people) infecting our blood and causing us to become susceptible to fall into disease.
But now thanks to advances in farming the tare is called wheat and the wheat is called buckwheat/keff/sorghum etc... and most folks find it inedible.
Which is why folks cant tell the wheat from the tares.

    But burritos taste awesome

    nice story rube
    but i meant burritos
they may have wrapped food in tortillas during the mexican revolution
but they certainly never called them burritos
i know you have mexican roots, but (and i'm not trying to be a dick) have you ever been to mexico?
and baja doesn't count, i'm talking about mainland mexico
because i've been they're a lot, going back to the 1970's
    there are no burritos there
people there use flour tortillas like some people here use bread
they don't make a sandwich or wrap out of it
they use it to sop up what they're eating
baja is more commercialized than it was in the 70's and 80's
and i'm sure there are places serving burritos from tijuana to ensenada
but, with very few exceptions [like, say, american friendly resorts] there are no burritos
or, check that, there weren't any in the 70's and 80's
and fwiw, fajitas, taquitos and quesadillas are american creations as well

True there are no burritos in Mexico, central and southern.
But in the north, in the desert, from where Villa is from there are plenty of people who eat them.
They just dont call them that. They are either tacos but with flour tortilla or flautas.
And it IS a mexican food. Mexico is not just south and central mexico. Not just the lands of the spanish and indian.
Its also the lands of the desert chichimequas or barbarians who lived in the northern parts of mexico.
You know them better as California, Texas, Arizona, etc... All that is mexico.
And in the north they ate more wheat, as do most people the more you go north anywhere on the planet.
Most of that cultural knowledge is lost because we are told what 'mexican' is supposed to be.
Aztecs and Spanish basically. But the French have as much or more to do with Mexican culture than anyone else. And the Germans and Poles have a ton of influence too. Mexico even had a German emperor, their leading beer style is German, and its northern music is big band polka.
French and German peoples love bread/wheat.

A burrito is very much mexican if and when you use the proper ingredients.
If you put sour cream on it you already fucked up.
When you use all sorts of non northern mexico ingredients its no longer mexican food.
Nachos on the other hand cannot be mexican because nacho cheese is american processed cheese with turmeric for color.

Ive road tripped to Jalisco in central mexico via Nogales on the new road when i was 17 and the old road through the hills on the way back. Stopped all over the place mostly to taste the local flavor. Spent 3 months down there doing all the stuff i had never done in my life. Its probably the biggest reason i have been living on an old farm in the woods during the past 17 years.
Been to Mazatlan and other places in Sinaloa a few times over the years. And of course down to TJ/Puerto Nuevo more times than i can remember.
Never been to the south though. They call burritos something else, i think it has to do with little piglets instead of little donkeys. Then again they eat a lot more pork in the south then in the central and north.

BTW, when i order a carne asada burrito and the carne is not crispy but instead soggy like stew meat its not asada. That makes me not a happy flying burrito brother.

the food culture of northern mexico and baja are heavily influenced by the states
give the people what they want
    that what the north did
i remember being in northern mexico in the 80's and asking for a burrito
they had no idea what i was talking about
when i tried to explain it they brought me a taco
but as more gringos began traveling down there it was in their best interest to adapt

The wild swings of digression truly make this the Off Topic thread.

Do we need a "Politics" thread? And a "Food" thread? Both warrant a more focused conversation.

I love reading some of Rube's "the world according to Garp" posts reciting out of context dubious history to support his out of context dubious conclusions and then midway through the post notice that he actually gets a few things right on the mark. The conclusions.. not always so much. But to each his own as this makes DSP all the better.

On the "Food" rants both Irish and Rube are mostly right in my experience. Been to Mexico a couple of dozen times, love the food all over but agree about many items being Americanized bastardizations... to serve local tastes. I recall that burrito's did not exist until recently, but sopes, torta's, tostados or tamales were widely available in addition to tacos. Pork was far more prevalent than beef I agree but I found some form of salsa nearly everywhere. Not with chips so much but always available.

I've taken my adult kids to Mexico enough over the years that my son also appreciates that true Mexican food in America is more often found at the local hole in the wall taqueria which only serves corn tortillas and not found in some fancy El Torito. (retch)

Of course food is introduced by the conquering forces and most beef, pork, chicken and sheep were brought in by the Spanish who owned Mexico for some 300 years.

We could just as easily rail against
French Fries not being from France
    Pizza not being from Italy
All Chinese food in America not being from China

I prefer pizza from New York over Italy which is missing the spicy meats
I prefer Chinese food in China rather than America which is too sweet
I prefer french fries wherever I get them having not made it to France yet

For this mans opinions whatever they may be worth

    French doesnt mean France.
Chinese food in america like Panda express is not chinese food. Thats taco bell level for mexican food.
If you go to a chinese restaurant and the menu is in catonese and there is no orange chicken anywhere in the building... you at a real chinese restaurant. Now bring me some Beef Chow Fun.

I NEVER go to Panda Express. Ever.

And my local Chinese outfit, which is far better than most, frequented primarily by Asians, is run by a Cantonese family recently immigrated from China and even they admit that American's don't want to eat Chinese Chinese food so they sweeten the recipes.

I know whereof I speak my friend.
