I am trying to be optimistic about this year. I guess I need to be honest about a few concerns. Someone tell me that I am being overly critical and it will all work out. I have concerns regarding 3rd/SS (though I do not believe that Ramirez will cost me in runs than he will in offense), OF (Kemp's injury has me worried and he is not one to actually fucking listen, bench (a bit), and which Chad will see and who is Ryu.

And who has? As much of a feel good story he was, there cant be faith in him, and if they do, then thats a problem. We are talking about a career minor leaguer that "suddenly" had a good half a season, not even full season... We should have something better playing 3B...

Obviously, Rolen is not the answer tho...

    Uribe???

that's the problem... the options arent anything impressive... the best option actually was to move Hanley to 3B and land a SS by trade... but over Rolen I would try Dee, or if Cruz was going to stick around then move HIM to SS and play HAnley at 3B... to me, all the better options require Hanley to play 3B...

but again, that guy Uribe could be something...

I'd rather have Cruz/Rolen split time at third than Dee play SS

I'd rather we trade Juan Uribe for Evan Longoria. But realistically those are the two most likely possibilities.

    PITCHING PLANS

The Dodgers will head to spring training in two weeks with eight starting pitchers on the major-league roster. And they intend to treat each of them as starting pitchers. Mattingly said there is no plan to make an early decision about which excess starter might fit in the bullpen and start grooming one or more for a relief role. The main reason for that is the health issues of Ted Lilly and Chad Billingsley. Lilly is recovering from shoulder surgery while Billingsley has worked this winter to avoid surgery for a partially torn ligament in his elbow.

"We'll see how health goes in spring training," Mattingly said. "If everybody is healthy, then we'll make some tough decisions."

Lilly, Aaron Harang and Chris Capuano figure to be the odd men out if the Dodgers' preferred rotation (Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett, Hyun-jin Ryu and Billlingsley) is healthy. But Billingsley's status is still questionable, Mattingly said. The right-hander has spent the winter rehabilitating his elbow and did start a throwing program in early December that went well. Nonetheless, his availability for Opening Day is a question that won't be answered any time soon – and is clearly making the Dodgers hesitant to trade any of their surplus starters.

"Bills is on his normal (off-season workout) program," Mattingly said. "But I think everybody's a little iffy on that."

    BIG BILLS

Grreinke recalls pitching with Billingsley on the same team during a week-long tournament when both were in high school. Billingsley made a weighty impression on his future big-league teammate.

"I thought he was a little bit fat at the time," Greinke said with dry humor. "At one point, our coach was talking about which player he thought had the best pitcher's body on the team and he said Billingsley. I was, like, 'Are you serious?' But that's when I learned it's not necessarily fat. It's about having a good strong base. That's obviously a plus."

Billingsley is listed at 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds. Mattingly joked that Greinke has already offered some other advice to his new teammate.

"(Zack) said Bills should stop throwing his cutter (cut fastball)," Mattingly said in another indication of how Greinke combines an analytical approach to the game with an unfiltered openness about his opinion at times. "We've been telling Bills for three years to throw fewer cutters. His fastball just explodes but his cutter – hitters can see it."

Hyun-Jin Ryu says no to WBC; priority is Dodgers
    By Mark Saxon | ESPNLosAngeles.com
    January, 28, 2013 | 3:22 PM PT

By this time last year, Hyun-Jin Ryu was already well into spring training.

Teams in the Korean Baseball Organization begin training in mid-January. It was 32 degrees Monday in Daejeon, where Ryu's former team, the Hanwha Eagles, play. Because of frosty weather back home, teams in Korea typically go abroad for spring training.

In recent years, Ryu has trained in Arizona, Japan and, last year, Hawaii.

Like everything else this season for Ryu, the pitcher the Dodgers signed to a six-year, $36 million contract in December, spring training will be a new set of experiences. Because he is intent on acclimating as quickly as possible, Ryu made the difficult decision of saying no when he was asked to represent Korea in the World Baseball Classic.

As a 22-year old in 2009, Ryu had a 2.57 ERA in the inaugural WBC, where the Koreans finished as runners up.

"It’s actually very difficult to make that decision," Ryu said through an interpreter. "I felt my first priority was getting with the team, getting to know the new system and becoming friends with the players and coaches. If the event was next year or the year after, I would have gladly competed, but right now my top priority is to be a Dodger."

Ryu began his throwing program over the weekend, but he said he has spent the past several months in Southern California getting his body ready for spring training.

"In America, by the time you go to camp, you have to be fit and ready to go," he said.

    • The Padres are likely to pass on Porcello for more affordable starters. Rosenthal suggests San Diego could look to trade for pitchers such as Aaron Harang and Luke Hochevar in Spring Training.
tell the pads we'll ship them harang, lilly, crapuano, uribe, dee, punto and sellers for headley and pay all their salaries

I know the lineup has some questions but if Kershaw and Bills stay healthy and Bills is back to the way he was at the end of last year are pitching staff is flat out freaking nasty. Bills, Zach and CK were pitching lights out number 1 stuff last year. The new Korean guy could be one hell of a number 4 and Beckett while not pitching like his former ace self was pitching like a solid number 3. We could have a rotation consisting of 1,1,1,3,3 along with a bull pen of possibly 3 closers and solid set up men.

If our pitching staff holds up and is one of the top rotations in the majors, which is what's expected, then the offense won't have to be at its best all year. Pitching and defense wins championships, having an explosive offense is just the icing on the cake.
