If the Dodgers could acquire one player at the deadline, who would you prefer?

  1. Machado

    43.5%
  2. Front line starter (degrom, thor, et al)

    56.5%

it's still over the threshold they said they're trying to avoid
and how would it not impact future acquisitions?
especially in 2023-2025 when (a then 33-35 year old) stanton will get $32MM annually
and again, they'd be gutting the farm system they've worked so hard to build

If Stanton was a FA, then we’re just talking about a huge amount of money. But we’re talking a huge amount of money and giving up prospects.

It’s just not efficient use of assets for a position that arguably we don’t really need given the stats this team put up this year.

Also, I’m getting a kinda Albert Pujols type vibe. Not saying the situation is the same, but that deal makes me worry about giving huge contracts to Stanton.

How many "farm" guys do you want on the team??? What spot would they fill?? Puig is probably staying. So is Taylor. Bellinger and Seager are locked in as well as Barnes and Turner. Where do you put them??? Use the surplus of the farm to get Stanton and for the next 5 years draft smart.

Yes a 33-35 yr old Stanton will get paid a ton of money, but so will guys like Harper/Arenado, most likely more. Stanton is 27, Harper is 25, Arenado is 26. Now if you are lobbying to NOT sign any big bat.....i understand. My point is the Dodgers need a big bat.

Atlantis sinking, Bermuda Triangle, Pirates of the Carribean, Cubans... I would stay out of the Gulf. That is probably where the star of our star is located. In case you forgot, planets are stars and stars have a focus which is not always at their core.

    He has told everyone.

They want to win a WS.
    This team can win.
But so can a lot of others.
This team is not the best team.
We have a great organization though.
And the team is top 5.
It is part of the 2nd tier after Houston.
    Stanton makes us first tier.
    Unless we lose again.

The first error people make with this kind of stuff is looking at history, looking at rhetoric, then coming to a conclusion that is not only based off history and rhetoric but taken from history and rhetoric.
You are supposed to read, listen, and ingest all the data available.
Then you have to use your personal knowledge to create a new future.
You dont look at the data and simply expect a carbon copy of the data as the future.
When a scout looks at a prospect he does not use the prospects history and current production to determine what they believe the prospect will become.
Same with an accountant and his books.
Or a broker with his stocks.
Sure, most will do the carbon copy thing. Data comes in, Data comes out. Then analysis.
That should be the first step though, not the major part of the process. You will come up with a right but dated conclusion. It would have been right in the past, but in the near future it is no longer present truth. Like how most intel you will get from a spy will already be obsolete by the time you can interpret and analyze it.
In a way that is wagging the dog.
You want to be the dog that is wagging his tail.
For that you have to ingest the data and have its vitamins and minerals flow through your body so YOU can give birth to a truer perspective.

The nerds have fed their farm system.
    It has produced good fruit.
It will continue to produce good fruit.
But the Astros have already produced more good fruit than us.
And they have then used some of that fruit and turned it into jam.
    We need some jam.
Because we traded some fruit for some jam but it was really jelly.
While jam is much stickier and can sometimes get you stuck it wont get runny and puss out on you like weak Japanese jelly.
Astros got them some jam for their PB&J.
We still eating them sloppy peanut butter and jelly sandwich without a full 9 hitter lineup of guys that can rake at any moment.

Did you have to do much studying to come to this conclusion?
Do you hold some high level statistics or logistics related degree?

Or is this just totally obvious.
Both what the dodgers need to do as per their performance on the field.
And what the dodgers want to do as per their performance off the field.
Granderson/Darvish proved to be a bust.
They knew they had to take a step and start trading good young prospects for expensive veteran skill.
The Dodgers were not supposed to be this dominant, the nerds never dreamed we would be this good this fast. We are a good year ahead of schedule.
So they took a step but they decided to take a good step forward.
They could have had a great step forward but did not want to roll the dice on Verlander and Martinez.
If we parted ways with Verdugo at the break last year we probably are the WS champions right now.
Add Verlander to our rotation instead of Darvish. Two decent games from Verlander in the series and we win. And replace the guy who replaced Granderson in the WS lineup with Martinez... thats our DH, thats our championship.

So this year they will correct their mistake. They will make one giant leap for Dodgerkind.
    Stanton and Otani.
    With two more 'lesser' FA.
Likely a reliever and a utility guy but maybe a catcher with a strong arm or a power bat.

    Its not efficient at all.
    Neither is my Vitamix.
But mixing shit in my kitchen is important to me.
I want to crush not just mix in the mixing game.
Let all the 29 other mixers mix around with each other.
I want to crush em all mixing.
I want twin turbos and a big block on my mixer
    Totally not efficient.
I got all the attachments, extenders, and glassware.
Totally takes up too much capinet space.
With everything else im pretty basic though.
But nobody fucks with my blender.
    And its blue.

A Vitamix is very efficient. Try all that mixing you apparently love by hand.

You dont eat every apple at your orchard.
You trade some for another guys jam.
You can try to make jam.
Or you can sell em to the apple juice guy.
You can always till them back as manure if push comes to shove.
When you have a bumper crop you sell them all because you can finally afford to buy the farm.

Morrow will probably get a nice 3 year deal, and we kinda ran him into the ground a little bit.
Could be a guy that becomes worth every penny.
But I like how the team tries to make make new guys like these every year.

    Its nice being Rocky.
    I know the feeling.
We been Rocky for a long time though.
And Rocky only wins in movies.
In real life Clubber Lang wins the belt.
Dodgers need Clubber Lang at bat and Ivan Drago on the mound.

You are spot on. Either Fall doesn't know about the common baseball term, is being super literal because he doesn't understand why/how its used, or does of course understand but doesn't care and simply would rather feign it a moot point after dismissing your correction to his correction so he can move on without diminishing himself.

I would guess Stanton too smart to allow that.
He knows the Giants are happy enough to keep him around for the next decade and not go after the required big ticket players or invest in the farm system and just ride Stanton as much as possible like they did Barry and hope for the best knowing the fans will eat it up because of Stanton leading the league in HR every year.

But he knows that if the Dodgers want him it means they are in it to win it and will continue to do whatever it takes every season to retain their competitive edge over the rest of the league. That not only will they go after the big players available to fill holes but that quality prospects will come in every year and quality random minor leaguers that have a will will be coached up so that they can get max production out of their effort.

    Its not even a choice.
Dont forget, its not the Marlins who choose.
    Its Stanton.
And he does not want to be on a team like the Mets.
Not just the mets but even a team that is like them.
    Like the Giants.
The Mets are the Marlins Giants.
But that is Stanton the Marlin baseball player.
To Stanton the Dodgers fan its still the Giants who he hates the most.
The Mets are just the current replacement for him since he plays in the NL East.
