Adam Carolla has been talking up this topic on his podcast this week. I had a three-hour drunken marathon convo about it back at Christmas.

So, here's my entry... in 1984, I bought a 1970 Chevy Caprice, 4 door, 4 barrel Holley carburetor from an old couple in Fullerton hills. Cost? $500. Color? Faded navy blue. The thing was huge. I called it Das Boot.

Blew out the head gasket after about a month. Repaired myself which took a week plus because I didn't know WTF I was doing. Had to use a Chilton book from the public library. It never ran well again. Sold it for $200 about four months later. Not my greatest moment.

My dream car was an El Camino. Later it was a Corvette. Never did get either one.

This is a clean version of my Caprice. Mine was not this clean, plus it didn't have stock hubcaps.

So ... weigh in. What was your first car?

'67 Impala with the bucket seats.

Added a 4/8 tape deck with Craig speakers and I was in business. First tapes I bought were Band of Gypsies (Hendrix) and Lee Michaels.

Damn. I always wanted an Impala, too. And those Celicas were bitchen. Most were still on the road 15 years later.

Don't know how to post photos, but a really clean looking, cream Chevy '63 Super Sport two door.
My father came down to take a look at it when I drove it home, and as he was walking toward it, I asked him "doesn't it look great and in niiice shape" ? He nodded, " yeah, yeah"...
He walked over, opened the door bent down and looked at the odometer. He looked at me and said " you bought a car with 83,000 miles on it ! Are you insane"? ( In those days, that was BIG mileage). Not like these days...
There is a lot more to my first car story...lots.
But there were no such things as tape decks then, but the radio sure played, and Cousin Brucie and Murray the K came through loud and clear.

in 1978 i used my hard earned $$$ to buy a used 1973 chevy vega gt wagon for $1,100
long before the internet, so i had no way of knowing i was buying one of the greatest lemons ever
    but it looked great
broke down every couple weeks… literally
aluminum block engine did me in twice
a friend of mine who knew cars helped me rebuild it the first time
the second i said fuck it and gave it to him for $200
and yet, i still have great memories of that thing
really easy to ignore all the bad and (conveniently) only remember the good when it’s your first ride

74 Camaro and my mom actually saw it and suggested i buy it lol.
mine was brown and i had zero money besides the 3200 i paid for it so i pulled it apart and painted the grill black like this one
drill holes in the tailpipe so it sounded like i had headers etc
first car i ever replaced a starter on and also had no idea what i was doing but my dad was pissed i had it so no help
drove it way to0 fast and ultimately wrecked it
had it backwards on Malibu canyon trying to pass between semi's and survived that
not sure what mom was thinking but it was fun
always preferred the 72 body style

Lol mine looked good, but I think it had about 3 horsepower....downhill with a tailwind.

Clutch started slipping going up Kanan road coming back from the beach one day...that was fun trying to get it up that hill.

You could also pull the key out of the ignition while it was still running, and eventually just turn the ignition without the key.

About that time one of my sisters won the free use of a Toyota for a year. Now my father was a WWII vet who was in some of the most vicious fighting against the Japanese in the South Pacific. He saw some of the guys who went through the Bataan Death March. He had sworn he'd never buy a Japanese car.

Sister used the car for a year and loved it. Dad bought it and passed it down to the two next sisters. They put about 200,000 miles on it with few problems. He was sold.

1980 Olds Cutlass Supreme. This car nearly killed me twice. Had a tendency to sputter and cut out on me when I floored the accelerator, which isn’t good when trying to merge onto the freeway.

Then once, it backfired on the freeway, and I swear I thought someone shot at me. This car passed me on the right, and I thought the dude was going to pull something out and shoot me.

Sounds like my story except it was a 77 Honda cvcc and I was in Jr high and didn't have a license but was driving cars from the older kids from church yet mom wouldn't allow me to drive my own car so she made me let my cousin who just got here from El Salvador and had a pregnant wife and no money and they already got my room and I'm sleeping in the living room so why not give them my car too.
He got drunk and wrecked it on day 1.
    Totaled.
    I never drove it once.
I remember washing it with my cousin the day after we got it.
    He helped me wash it.
Then took it out that night.
But it was OK because it was an accident.
And he always sent me to the store to buy him beer. And we woukd drink and listen to comfortably numb.
Poor guy his wife gave him the church ultimatum and he gave up the ghost.
I had my shit thrown out in the trash bin while I was at work but his wife made him do it himself. What she didn't know is that I have a deal with the boys over at sanitation.
They don't come around here no more.
So my trash goes back to me eventually.
And I'm even finding some old steely Dan LPS.
And thay was never my music.
But i had a little bit of everything.
You kinda had to.back in the day.

My cousin introduced me to music outside of the pop spectrum and my mom's oldies tapes and my friends new shit.
We used to ssit and listen to pink Floyd for hours but now he's corporately numb.

He looked young even though he has a decade on me.
But I always been the old man and the kid at the same time.
Cuz I'm the guy in betwixt.
    Just don't call me Malcolm.
    Thats a Hollywood name.
