Chris Perez Suspended 50 Games For Drug Of Abuse
By Jeff Todd [June 24, 2015 at 4:41pm CDT]

Free agent righty Chris Perez has been hit with a 50-game suspension, the league announced (h/t to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy). The penalty was assessed for use of a drug of abuse, with the length based on the fact that this is Perez’s second such offense.

Amazing to me. I used drugs (pot for the most part) for 20 years and even I got to a point where it wasn't fun and just walked away.

    nah son
if anything, his own defense lit him up
    • Hamels was hurt by his defense, with third baseman Andres Blanco making a bad throw to the plate in New York's two-run second. Blanco then allowed Chase Headley's broken-bat grounder to glance off his glove for an RBI double in a three-run fourth that started with shortstop Freddy Galvis losing a popup in the sun. Philadelphia has failed to score while Hamels has been in the game in seven of 15 starts this year and has been shut out in 32 of his last 33 innings. The Phillies were blanked until scoring in the ninth against Diego Moreno.

Maybe he's not there yet. Perhaps he's only near ten years.

Perez, 29, was the long-time closer for the Indians before signing as a free agent last year with the Dodgers. He opened the 2015 season at Triple-A for the Brewers after inking a minor league deal, but opted out of his deal earlier in the season.

Though he’s had some very good years along the way, Perez has struggled to deliver consistent results while dealing with command issues at times. He still has a big arm, having averaged over 94 mph on his four-seamer last year, and seemed likely to get another shot at the big leagues in the relatively near term.

All told, Perez owns a 3.51 ERA over 379 1/3 MLB frames, with 8.6 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9. He allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits and four walks in his 7 2/3 minor league frames earlier this year, striking out just three batters in the process.

It's most likely a test taken before he was a Free Agent, he's only been a free agent for about 8 weeks. But how does the suspension work if he's a FA? I'd assume he can serve the suspension while being unsigned.

Something wouldn't have to necessarily be against the law to get busted for it, it would just have to be against the code of conduct agreed upon between MLB and the MLB Player's Association. Marijuana rules have been a hot-button issue, and will likely be removed from the tested substances in all sports eventually, but it will take time.

That said, there is no indication it was weed, is there?

Red Sox await test results on Hanley's left hand
Slugger struck by batted ball while running to second base
    by Ian Browne | MLB.com — 4 hours ago
    [IMG]
BOSTON -- The fact that Hanley Ramirez was automatically out after being struck by a batted ball by teammate Xander Bogaerts was just bad luck. The true misfortune is that he suffered a left hand injury on the fluky play. Ramirez and the Red Sox can only hope the ailment is not significant.

Following a 5-1 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday, Ramirez was undergoing further imaging to determine if the injury is more than just the contusion that was originally announced.

"All imaging is being done right now," Red Sox manager John Farrell said after the game. "The exam that was done here obviously didn't reveal anything concrete. So he's going through a CT-scan and X-ray here right now."

Earlier this season, Bogaerts was the one who was called out when he was hit by a batted ball. Ramirez was drilled on the left hand between first and second in the bottom of the fifth.

"It wasn't really a hit and run but once I saw him go, my whole angle was trying to hit the ball that way. Who would've known I'd hit a line drive that hit him?" Bogaerts said.

An inning later, things got worse for the Red Sox when Dustin Pedroia hobbled off with a right hamstring injury.

"Those are two essential parts of our lineup," said Bogaerts. "Two big guys, two big bats. Hopefully everything is good with them."

Ramirez went 2-for-2 before exiting the game and is hitting .341 in his past 24 games.

    Lol, I love Greinke.

In 2013, Don Mattingly called a team meeting and told his charges to loosen up. Then, in an unprecedented move, because he never speaks out like this, Zack Greinke stood up. “I’ve got something to say,” he said. The room was quiet.
“Some of you guys have been doing the number two and not washing your hands. It’s not good. I noticed it even happening earlier today. So if you guys could just be better about it, that would be great.”

Greinke sat down. The team wasn’t sure if he was serious. When they realized he was, they laughed. Then they took the field, far looser than they had been, and went out and beat the Dbacks. Two days later they clinched the division and jumped in the Dbacks pool.
